Well I have finally joined the Servis Quartz club with my Quartz Plus 6035 which I picked up last week. Had a right rigmarole getting it as it was near Manchester so I arranged for a courier to collect and deliver which turned into a right farce (don't use Parcel Monkey) so ended up doing a round trip myself although was staying in Cambridge so a little bit shorter than if I'd been at home. Still I'm really pleased I got it.

Cosmetically its not too bad - there is a small bit of rust at the bottom and a few scratches. However, I think the bearing is on its way out as there is a hot metal/burning smell after a while when I have run the spin and the drum comes to a stop very quickly. It doesn't seem to be too noisy though so it might be that the bearing has dried out as not sure when the machine was last used - you should see the powder drawer! There is some staining on the outer tub. This might be the same issue that Chris (Aquarius8000) has with his 3305. I ran a test rinse the other night and there is a leak at the front inside the machine and then also from the door when it started its distribute and pump out so a new door seal is needed as well.

I've never attempted a drum bearing replacement before so was wondering if anyone out there has and might have some information especially any service information for the Quartz regarding part numbers etc. I have seen the bearing kits and door seals for sale but not sure about the drum seals. I'm going to have a proper look at the machine over the weekend.

Congratulations!

I love this style of Servis Quartz with the panel door and piano key buttons. Thank you for taking the back panel off so that we can see the internals. The motor is obviously a GEC/Hotpoint product. The bearing change procedure is also the same easy procedure as Hotpoint's. You take cabinet off (I don't think the front panel comes off these). Take the front of the tub off, take inner drum out and replace bearings.

Congratulations Steve on obtaining another classic, That staining doesnt look bad at all for a 28yr old machine, the tubs too tend to be stiff, they dont freewheel, is there any up and down play in the drum? and how does it sound on spin? does it have a lot of vibrations? The burning smell could be a rubbing belt thats sat too long, or see what state the capacitor is in...

Parts are still available and you shouldnt have too much trouble when you need spares, the fabric dispenser looks like it had olf "Comfort" in it by the colour, you should scrape it out and keep it ...ha ha

These are great washers with heavy duty circuit boards and you dont see many washers with the "Computer Ribbon"....simple and built to last

Hi James. Thanks - I love the styling of these too and the circuit board is stamped as 1988 so I think they have aged very well and still look the business. You are right, the front does not come off so I guess the whole tub would have to come off but..........

Hi Mike. It turns out that it was some form of Ariel gel with black mould under it which someone must have popped in by accident. It certainly wasn't gel like scraping it out - yuk. Your Dad's machines look like they are doing their first ever wash!!

Anyway, I've had a good play about today and I think the bearing is ok. I took the belt off to see if there was any play and it seems fine. There is a slight squeak when the drum stops but nothing to worry about. I ran it back on a fast spin and the smell is actually coming from the vent from the soap dispenser so it might be that there is a build up of gel in the machine if it had always done low temperature washes. A good old hot wash and clean out might sort it out. However, I am still going to have to open up the tub as the seal has gone at the front which is where the leak is coming from. Will be a good opportunity to make sure it is clean.

Any idea what the tub gasket and door seal part numbers are? I haven't seen any that match my model but I'm assuming any of the full panel door models will have the same parts! I couldn't see how the door seal is released from the front either - the chrome ring looks like it has to come off but I'm not sure how.

I'm dying to get it up and running again so fingers crossed I don't contract anything from that soap drawer lol

Great machine Steve.

Congratulations on acquiring it and am sure you will get it back into top form.

Standard door seals as far as I know that applies across the piano key machines and the follow on Sapphire models. Its quite possible and highly probable that the door seal is the same as that fitted to the slimlines too as, although the cabinet changed, mechanically there was litte changed from the previous slimline series.

I parted out a very work weary Sapphire, for spares for my grandmas's machine - I fathomed how you got the door seal off, but can't for the life of me remember how its done. Miiikkkkkkkeeeeeeeeee! How do you do it?

Did these Servis use high water levels on rinses? Is this model called 'Spectrum' by any chance as it is the same an old friend use to have. Brilliant machines if only you could still buy them today.

At 100 litres per cycle, they most certainly would have used high level rinses....but then just about everything before about 1995 did.

Thanks. I'm going to get hold of a door seal that list the 6000 series model numbers as I'm sure you are right. Fingers crossed but in the absence of part numbers I'll take a chance. Hopefully Mike can remember how to release the old one as I wouldn't want to ruin it.

Wish the same could be said for the hunt for the tub seal. I'm not going to give up looking yet but not found one so far. One way or another I will get this lovely old machine back up and running.

Yes these machines have low medium and high water levels with normal programmes washing on medium and rinsing on high as you can see on mine and also Mikes photos. The half load button uses the low and medium levels.

You definitely don't get high levels now! I've got a load of towels in my smeg at the moment and its struggling to get the foam out so I've had to give it an extra one! No sign of the water just suds another good reason to get the quartz back into action

Hmmmmm

Well I've had a chance for a good fiddle over the weekend and managed to work out how the chrome band comes off - just a little clip at the bottom that you have to tease off and then the band releases.

Now the bad news. The leak is coming from the lower part of the outer tub from the joint between the tub and front cover. I managed to get the tub cover off without having to take the whole shell off the machine. I thought the seal hadn't been fitted properly so cleaned it all up and positioned it fully, reassembled and tested but it leaked again!! I guess if worst comes to worst then I can apply sealant but would rather avoid this but I haven't been able to find a replacement seal.

Paul - would you happen to have one of your famous spreadsheets showing all the quartz range model numbers as well as the Electra and Hitachi equivalents? Fingers crossed I might be lucky with the additional info. Here's a picture of the tub front and seal

I Have one burried at the bottom of the shed in fairly goo condition,Heats very fast,and quite quietly too.
Maindrum belt ok,but little drive belt well nee replacing.
Workd perfecly and not in bad nick
So anybdy who is interested form an ordilly que,,,no moanin,bitchin or que jumpin,

Hi Steve, good to see you got the band off, the only model I have that I have seen that band on is a later Spectrum washer dryer, the set above is an early release, whats the serial number of yours, yes to prise off use a thin flat driver or knife....there are two types of gaskets later ones with the chevron drums had a lip nub at the top, think these are the ones with the band!! Replacement door seals are still available 6033 series, look to see if yours is the later one with the lip!!

Sealant bands are available from e-spares etc, and also Band on a roll, which if you use it join the ends at the top of the tub with a little sealant...your washer looks in good nic , looking forward to seeing the vids!!

Yep - there is a spreadsheet for Servis, but its a bit of a mess due to Servis products being listed in Mk number order. As such, the Quartz models are dotted around the spreadsheet and it would be difficult to upload here.

The above are all the Quartz models, of the traditional style bodyshells, that are curretly known of. Surprisingly there were quite a few.
