Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Just my 2 cents...

I would definetly save it from the crusher. There is nothing like a vintage quality made washer versus a modern all plastic piece of junk that lasts 5 years or less.

I have this exact washer, except it's a year or two newer (A-490). The only thing I had to replace in 23 years of ownership is the transmission belt last year (I replaced both belts at the same time)

It's a true workhorse! Personally, I think any Maytag made before June of 1986 (old style transmission) should be saved from the crusher.

By the way, to convert this model to top of the line, you only need the TOL console, wiring harness, and 2 speed motor. These parts can be torn down from used machines before they face their fate of the crusher.

Looks almost like our LA-510 (from 1982), only thing different on the control panel is the color of the buttons.

Of course, GO for it...you can't go wrong!

If that lint filter is clogged, submerge and soak it in baking soda and water for a few days and it'll all brush off.

is one of your current Maytags a fabric-matic, Gary?

i look forward to your opinion of the Fabric-matic action. sometimes i get the impression that folks think of the fm machines as being less worthy than the two speed machines. i disagree. i often used gentle agitation only to wait for the machine to finish agitating to switch it back to regular for fast spin.

i think Fabric-matic was a great idea for a one speed machine.

i wonder if any other makes did wash, pause, wash, pause BEFORE Maytag introduced it on thier machines??

Re: Hi! Gary, GadgetGary, I agree:

With everyone else, you should definately get this Washer and save it from going to the Krusher. Afterall, it is still a decent Maytag Washer and it is no doubt with the original Transmission of the Helical Drive Washers, that the housings were similar shaped to the WP/Kenmore Transmissions, even though they do Spin, instead of staying stationary, as the WP/Kenmore's do while the Tub's are Spinning.

"BTW" What does Steve "Toggles" think about this Washer and your getting it, I'm kind of surprised that he hasn't Posted his opinion as of yet. Oh! Steve "Toggles" where are you...

I've got an A-606 and a DG-706 Matched Set, both in Almond. I also have a DE-606 Dryer in White, but I don't have a Matched Washer of any Models as of yet, to put with it. Mine all have the Brown Control Square Buttons and Brown Round Timer Knob, as well as the Turquoise Agitators, with the 4-Slots for the Lint Filter's Lint catching.

Good Luck with getting this, if you don't get this Washer, I certainly hope as others do, that maybe someone else will get it and prevent it from going to the Krusher.

Peace and Great Laundry Cleaning with a Vintage Maytag Auto-Washer, Steve

If there is no oil underneath - and there probably isn't as this was after Maytag added a seal to the bottom of the driveshaft - it would be a good "parts store" to keep your other TOL model(s) running for a long, long time. Especially if the price is good, it's always wise to grab those original, long stroke Maytag parts.

And a white tub!! I usually see these with blue/gray tubs so it's worth it for that alone!!

ANY Maytag Helical drive or Depenable Care models are worth saving. They will eventualy dissapear before our eyes.I always over ride the door switch by splicing the wires. The lst set I had in Florida had the electronic consoles.A customer said the washer had a bad pump.I got them for free, took them home and replaced the frayed pump belt!I sold them to a friend for $500They are still running great after 5 years of daily use.

Maytag!

Hi Gary,
Go for it - if you don't want to keep it you can always sell it. It's a real gem, they don't make them that way anymore as we know.
Best Of Luck what ever you decide.
Peter

It's Fabric-matic, so it is single speed. It does have the 2 minute incrementing timer; other higher-end models in this series have a 1.5 minute timer. That means you get a 30 second longer rinse and spray rinse.

Go for it! It can always be a parts donor...

Yes

It has been discussed.

That washer is a workhorse. That was my first Maytag washer from the 80's and it did wash for a family of 7. It is still running. The delicate cycle is where the "FabricMatic" works. It would agitate for a minute and soak for 2 and then another min of agitate. The one thing that the manual says to do is if you have a medium load of delicates is to use the Ex Large water level...so that way the items in the load stay away from the agitator as much as possible. Rarely if ever used that cycle. Plus the spin is very short on the Delicate cycle...just one min after full pump out and thats it.
The other thing that is different with this A510 is the tub color. In my 510 it was blue..not white and the buttons were off white. I would get it..its a bare bones basic washer but it does the job.

No, Don't get it and give it to me! That machine is beautiful, my Nanny had one from 76', turq aqitator, golden exterior. That is worth getting, even if you cannot hook it up and use it.

maytag junkies....

It's just that we all know a good thing when we see it!
and we also know that long, slow strokes are the best.............such as the Maytag PowerFin provides.......

oh yes, hooked, hooked , hooked!

Sad. So Sad.
So many American classics, traditional icons, social customs and ways are going doing the toilet, one by one......
So "Yay" to the benefits and "Boo" to the drawbacks as a result of moving away from traditional classsic/sleek/stylized design and engineering to the "newer" global style/way.

Long live the classic look function and arc and for keeping a bit of history going.

P.S when I die I want to be be impaled over a classic turquoise agitator in an actual Maytag machine. (Use a newer cork-scew agitator if you need a tighter fit). The sight of that will meet with the classic Greek saying at a funeral "May your memory be eternal"

Amen, sistah!
