Should I or Shouldn't I?????

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Just my 2 cents...

I would definetly save it from the crusher. There is nothing like a vintage quality made washer versus a modern all plastic piece of junk that lasts 5 years or less.

I have this exact washer, except it's a year or two newer (A-490). The only thing I had to replace in 23 years of ownership is the transmission belt last year (I replaced both belts at the same time)

It's a true workhorse! Personally, I think any Maytag made before June of 1986 (old style transmission) should be saved from the crusher.

By the way, to convert this model to top of the line, you only need the TOL console, wiring harness, and 2 speed motor. These parts can be torn down from used machines before they face their fate of the crusher.

Looks almost like our LA-510 (from 1982), only thing different on the control panel is the color of the buttons.

Of course, GO for it...you can't go wrong!

If that lint filter is clogged, submerge and soak it in baking soda and water for a few days and it'll all brush off.

is one of your current Maytags a fabric-matic, Gary?

i look forward to your opinion of the Fabric-matic action. sometimes i get the impression that folks think of the fm machines as being less worthy than the two speed machines. i disagree. i often used gentle agitation only to wait for the machine to finish agitating to switch it back to regular for fast spin.

i think Fabric-matic was a great idea for a one speed machine.

i wonder if any other makes did wash, pause, wash, pause BEFORE Maytag introduced it on thier machines??

Re: Hi! Gary, GadgetGary, I agree:

With everyone else, you should definately get this Washer and save it from going to the Krusher. Afterall, it is still a decent Maytag Washer and it is no doubt with the original Transmission of the Helical Drive Washers, that the housings were similar shaped to the WP/Kenmore Transmissions, even though they do Spin, instead of staying stationary, as the WP/Kenmore's do while the Tub's are Spinning.

"BTW" What does Steve "Toggles" think about this Washer and your getting it, I'm kind of surprised that he hasn't Posted his opinion as of yet. Oh! Steve "Toggles" where are you...

I've got an A-606 and a DG-706 Matched Set, both in Almond. I also have a DE-606 Dryer in White, but I don't have a Matched Washer of any Models as of yet, to put with it. Mine all have the Brown Control Square Buttons and Brown Round Timer Knob, as well as the Turquoise Agitators, with the 4-Slots for the Lint Filter's Lint catching.

Good Luck with getting this, if you don't get this Washer, I certainly hope as others do, that maybe someone else will get it and prevent it from going to the Krusher.

Peace and Great Laundry Cleaning with a Vintage Maytag Auto-Washer, Steve

If there is no oil underneath - and there probably isn't as this was after Maytag added a seal to the bottom of the driveshaft - it would be a good "parts store" to keep your other TOL model(s) running for a long, long time. Especially if the price is good, it's always wise to grab those original, long stroke Maytag parts.

And a white tub!! I usually see these with blue/gray tubs so it's worth it for that alone!!

ANY Maytag Helical drive or Depenable Care models are worth saving. They will eventualy dissapear before our eyes.I always over ride the door switch by splicing the wires. The lst set I had in Florida had the electronic consoles.A customer said the washer had a bad pump.I got them for free, took them home and replaced the frayed pump belt!I sold them to a friend for $500They are still running great after 5 years of daily use.

Maytag!

Hi Gary,
Go for it - if you don't want to keep it you can always sell it. It's a real gem, they don't make them that way anymore as we know.
Best Of Luck what ever you decide.
Peter
