Advice please!! my daugther in law is a little pissed at me...I gave the grand child an egg of silly putty in his Christmas stocking...he got the stuff on the rug in his bedroom. I told my daughter in law to let it dry and it would vaccume up..guess not. Any cleaning suggestions?/tks/mark

I never knew Silly Putty to stick to anything except smooth surfaces, and it easily peeled right off.  I wonder if they changed the formula.

Maybe candle wax remover will work, or an aerosol spray (or just plain ice cubes) that will freeze the target area and perhaps solidify the putty for easy removal.

Scrape up what you can. Use rubbing alcohol on cotton balls/swabs and paper towels. Blot, blot, blot....repeat. Time consuming, but it usually works. Work a microscopic area at a time. A fresh straight edge razor blade can be helpful for carefully scraping as you work. I once spent a week as time allowed getting a silly putty foot print out of our carpet.

That stuff has been around for years and years. I remember as a kid it had a very distinctive odor to it. Last time I encountered SP was about 10 years ago. The smell was different than I remembered. So it must have changed.

When I was in 7th grade a kid brought some to school and got it in a girl's hair. They couldn't get it out. That teacher was pissed!

God, Silly Putty; haven't thought about it for years! I used to flatten it and press it against the page of a comic book. The image would transfer to the putty. No batteries, chargers, or wifi required.

Hope one of the solutions mentioned above helps get it out of the rug.

Two step process

Treat it like gum.
WD-40 to remove the offending substance.
Normal cleaning to remove WD-40. Steam cleaner works well for this step in the process.

It's actually Play-dough that will dry up and turn to powder. But I'm like the others, never knew silly putty to stick to anything but smooth surfaces. It was originally developed as a wall paper cleaner.

Thank you!!

Thanks everyone!!!! They just bought a house 1.5 miles from my drivway to there's. I'll tell my daughter in law the options and let her decide. I know over the years we've had post about how these youngesters don't have good concepts on how to keep house....this girl is Mrs. OCD about a clean house..I feel like I need to take my shoes off before entering their home...LOL!!! Thanks again!!!/mark

Fun fact I found out from watching the ad screen at the RMV-

Silly Putty was used by astronauts to keep objects, tools and the like from floating away from them during zero-grav time.

Another interesting but useless fact held in my head!
