Since it doesn't look like we've had a detergent thread in a while...

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I erred above.. my current bottle of Persil is the Cold Water version.. Can't remember why I bought it because I usually wash in warm and sometimes hot. Regardless I never noticed any difference. I'll try a full cold water wash just to see.

Laundry:
I'm still learning. Tide powder or liquid, original scent 90-some percent of the time.
I'm experimenting with Oxi Clean liquid, occasionally, especially for whites.
We have some Woolite for darks that I've tried a couple of times.
Depending on the batch being washed, I may add one or more of; Clorox liquid bleach, Clorox liquid oxygen bleach, Tide Brights and Whites Rescue pacs, ammonia, (never with chlorine bleach, obviously), Borax.
The rinse cycle gets white vinegar every time, and often a little fabric softener for the scent. Downy or Final Touch. I always wait for the washer to fill some, and add the softener to the tub. I don't put anything but vinegar in the softener dispenser. I've seen too many all gunked up with blue sludge. Yuck.

Dishes:
On the rare occasion that we run the dishwasher, we currently have Cascade with Dawn.
For hand washed dishes, Dawn Ultra. It seems like they changed the scent recently though.
I might try Palmolive one of these days. I used to like their scent, but perhaps that has changed too.
Growing up, my mom always used Ivory Liquid; which someone mentioned earlier.
Do they still make it? And does it still smell as amazing as I seem to remember?

Barry,

Ivory Liquid dish detergent is NOTHING like it used to be, from the scent to the liquid itself.  I bought some last year and was greatly disappointed.  Instead of the white, lotion of yore its now a crystal clear, thin liquid with barely any scent at all.

I’d recommend not buying it if you expect it to be like you remember it was.

Laundry:
Kirkland Signature F&C
Tide free powder
Home Made Simple F&C FS

Seventh Generation laundry stain spray
Shout foam
Shout advanced gel
Clorox bleach
All oxygen bleach
All dryer sheets

Dishes:
Trader Joe's dw powder. When it's gone, I am trying Seventh Generation powder. I love TJ's dw powder but will not be stepping in a retail store anytime soon so had to order the SG powder online.
Ecover rinse aid. I prefer Lemishine rinse aid, will be going back to that.
Seventh Generation Lemongrass & Clemintine Zest dish liquid

Still using the chlorinated Premier commercial dishwasher powder made by CP in the bucket, Tide pods in botanical rain scent, Walmart GV fabric softener for the colors and Suavitel yellow for the whites, Bold powder for the whites (low sudsing even with Clorox added).

Here's a puzzler:

Last time I washed bath towels, I added a minimum of Tide HE liquid. When I checked after about five minutes of washing, noticed no suds. So added a very small amount of liquid detergent. Five minutes later the washer was overloaded with suds (although not flowing out the door). I've seen this sort of thing before... it's frustrating because I like to titrate so there are just a few suds, but I simply do not understand how a load can start out with few to no suds and then they suddenly multiply. WTF?

I used vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser and the load finished without any telltale suds, and reasonably soft. But ... still ...

Complicating this process is that the Neptune has a solid door, so I can't just glance at it to determine if the suds are OK: present but not too much. Sigh.

My favorite bleach is shrunk

I don't know if I'm frowny faced or happy.

My favorite Clorox bleach has shrunk.

It's an adorable bottle and it typically lasts me about 6 months.  Now it's even smaller though it uses the same cap.

Also, just realized when I bought what I thought was more Oxydol detergent today, it's actually fabric softener.  I just grabbed it and put it in the baskset.

It's in the same size bottle, same color, same cap.... only after reading the small print does one realize it's fabric softener.  I've been duped.

I have to say, It's no April fresh Downy.
