I just bought a packet of normal Skip powder in France. This is Unilever's top of the line biological powder, which very similar banding to UK/Ireland Persil. The scent of the French product is FAR FAR nicer. It's like how a detergent should smell, fresh, a little citrusy. A bit like how Ariel used to smell before it was relaunched with new 'uber-whiff'.

I find Persil in the UK and Ireland now smells kind of non-detergent like, a bit more like a musky shower gel or something.

Why do detergent makers in the UK/Ireland market seem to think they should keep playing with how these products smell?

Not surprised

Is like so many things in Europe compared to the UK, including many food products. The UK always seems to get inferior quality by comparison!

Too right about the musky smell of Persil

I'd say it's more like cheap deodorant than anything else. It almost gives me a headache. Worst thing is it dosen't matter how well you rinse things they still reek of the stuff when you're wearing them. For me the most offensive one is the small and mighty!

Ariel bio does smell a bit on the strange side, but I find it much more bearable than Persil. My box is almost empty now, I plan to replace it with original scent Daz, IMO it's the last detergent to still smell like a detergent, lol.

Has anyone bought ariel regular liquid recently? It used to smell gorgeous but now it's got that heavy musky, men's shower gel scent that everything seems to be getting these days.

The powders (and tablets) do indeed have that weird musty smell, but I have to say I've been using Small and Mighty recently, the bio one, and I've not had nicer smelling laundry for a long time now! Much more pleasant than even the old Ariel liquid smell. The non bio tablets have lost that smell too, the smell more like a proper detergent again.

I find the current Persil powder / tab scents a little on the heavy side, too.

Interestingly, I am rather enjoying Surf tablets at the moment. Despite the `essential oils / lavendar and oriental blossom' pretence on the box, they are extremely lightly scented compared to Persil and most other detergents. By themselves they leave a fresh clean smell and not much else, and for this reason they can be married up with any fabric softener. I also have the tropical ones, which leave a slightly stronger but still very pleasant scent.

It's nice for the first time to be able to use a decent branded biological tablet which doses in the drawer, doesn't oversoap, doesn't leave specks on darks, rinses quite well and leaves a very non offensive scent.

I still find it interesting that the blurb on the Surf box is clearly written for a more tabloid audience than it's Persil equivalent. Social engineering by laundry detergent!!

In terms of FS, Comfort `Tempting Nature' has been a fave for a few months. This has a wonderful scent at just the right strength which I don't tire of, though I will never fully accept the `snot green' imaging. Have a bottle of Comfort Pure and Lenor Barefoot knocking about too.

Take care all

Nick
