Slow ice maker

I have less than a year old Whirpool sxs with ice and water in door. The ice maker is located in the door. This has to be the slowest ice maker i have ever seen. The bin can be almost empty when going to bed and only half full by morning. It never seems to catch up. Had repair service out and they changed the ice maker and the water hose and wiring harness attached to it yesterday and does not seem to have made any difference. Changed the filter also but to no avail. Any other alternatives or things I can do besides getting a new fridge? Have ice trays in the freezer for when we run out. Have had ice makers in fridges for almost all my life and never ran out on a daily basis. Thanks for any info.

Just a wild guess here, but are items on the shelves maybe blocking the stream of cold air that blows directly to the ice maker?

Is the IM in the door or just the ice bucket? [ it is always helpful if everyone could at least include a model number when asking questions about their appliances ]. But otherwise get the freezer temp down at least 0 degrees and see how that works.

My cheap apartment Hotpoint chunks out 8 crescents in roughly an hour. The freezer is indeed 0F with a digital therm.

We had that problem with the Whirlpoo fridge in our break room.  I think it got better after the second control board replacement, before the compressor went the first time.

polkanut the temp is set for 0 degrees in freezer and 37 degrees in refrig.
tom there is a direct vent system that goes from the back to the door no blockage.
combo the entire unit is built into the door nothing on the shelves the model # is

I pushed the button last night for fast ice. this makes the fan run longer in the freezer. This morning was the first time that it was almost full. maybe this needs to be on all the time to keep the bin fuller.

I have seen these models and have not had any real problems with them yet. I know that the in door IM models use a smaller IM and they probably don't get as much cold air to the IM unless you use the Fast Ice setting, and that is probably the best thing to do. You may also find that it will make ice faster when warmer weather comes and the refrigerator is running more of the time. Good Luck with your new refrigerator John.

French-Door

I was looking at upgrading to the Kitchenaid French-Door refrigerator with a similar configuration of the ice maker in the upper left refrigerator door. I like the fact that the ice maker is not taking up interior space on the refrigerator itself but was concerned about the door being opened and closed several times a day which would slow ice production. Or even cause water splash if the door was slammed when the water was still liquid.

That and the money...

Thats an excellent point Malcolm......never thought about the water not frozen yet.....

I have a 1988 Kenmore Limited SXS, it has a huge bin in the freezer, and have never run out, takes about 24 hours to fill and stop, and it does make them fast.....although every now and then a cube used to get stuck under the arm and stop production, I bent the arm a little so a cube would never get stuck

I have a pull out bottom drawer freezer, by Amana, make that 2 drawers have to be pulled for ice, just a standard ice maker and bin, and again fills in 24 hours, but I can about use the cubes up as fast as it can make them thru out the day.....

thank goodness my upright freezer has an ice maker as well.....thinking of investing in an undercounter Ice Maker, just for the demand...

the SXS with the ice maker and bin in the door doesn't seem to make as many cubes at one time, nor does the bin hold alot.....could be reason as to high demand for a smaller unit not keeping up....

I was thinking of a new SXS with this feature.....now I may rethink

The ice maker is the same size in this refrig as in others that i have owned. I was surprised when they replaced it. Six half moon cubes. It does seem to be a little deeper than other ones. This must be to take into account that when one slams the door the water does not come out. Never had that problem and believe me the door has been slammed. lol. Since leaving it on fast ice it seems to be filling the bin regularly and keeping it there. So I guess problem has been solved so far by the replacement parts and keeping it on fast ice during the normal usage period.

WP IM SIZE

I think the IM is shorter in length, most WP IMs make 8 cubes at a time.
