We have had our washer for about 12 months, the last three or four we have noticed a sour order from the washer. the clothes come clean but don't smell fresh. Even when it's been a few days since a load of clothes has been washed, when you open the door to the machine it stinks inside? Anybody have this experience with the big front end loader?

Hi! When you complete Laundry, do you let the Door stay opened for a while to Air-Out the Drum? That might help, besides Wiping Dry the Rubber Boot, besides checking it to see if there might be any pieces of Lint in the Ribs of the Boot.
You might try doing a Hot Wash, {without any Laundry} with some Vinegar or Disenfectant, to help clean out the Tub area, but be careful with the Disenfectant, they can tend to Sudz-Up. You might also try just using Bleach, in the Hot Wash Cycle.
Hope that this helps with the Smell. That is the most important thing to do with actually Front-Load and Top-Load Washers, to leave the Lid/Door opened for a while to allow the Tubs to Air-Out, to try and prevent Smells.
What Model Washer do you have? Do you have the Matched Dryer too, in Electric or Gas Model?

Front loading washing machines retain small amounts of water to keep their pumps and or door seals from drying out, much like an automatic dishwasher. Leaving the door closed, especially during warm humid weather can allow mold/mildew to take hold. If you see "fog" on the inside of your washer's window, that means it is more moist inside your machine than out, not a good thing.
Set your washer for a normal hot wash, and add 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach, then allow the washer to run it's course. When finished leave the door and if possible the dispenser drawer (air will flow through the dispenser and out of the door)to air the washer out. Repeat if necessary.
Once the sour smell is gone, take a page from commercial laundromats and the rest of us who own front loaders, leave the door ajar for a few hours after use. Ideally if one is not going to use the washer every day, the door should be kept slightly open, but understand some homes with wee ones and pets find this a safety hazard.
As for the laundry which as a sour smell, you can either relaunder using chlorine bleach (if fabric/colors allow), otherwise wash in the hottest water allowed and add oxygen bleach. If possible line dry out doors in the sunshine and fresh air. Repeat if necessary.
If you are prone to laundering in mostly warm and cool/cold water, it is a good idea to run your washer at least once a month on "Normal" and using hot water. Do not add detergent, but you can use either dishwasher cleaning tabs (most are citric or oxalic acid), or 1 cup of white vinegar. You want to clean your machine of gunk, detergent,soap and fabric softener residue.
