Rough vintage, late 1990's

A google search showed the cache of an old Craigs list that mentioned they bought their MDE8000AYW over ten years ago:

"Nov 21, 2010 ... Maytag Washer, model #MAV8000AWW and Dryer, model #MDE8000AYW These are in mint condition. The pair was purchased about 10 years ago, ..."

Thus seeing all those 8's in the serial number, My hip shoot wild guess is a 1998 vintage!

Another place mentioned something about a separate/drum/tumbler.

With luck maybe it is just the felts being worn.

A neighbor has a Maytag set that the dryer looks about like yours and it was bought in the late 1990's.

Excellent dryer. Probably just needs some of those drum bearings which are just teflon or plastic strips riveted to the front drum bulkhead. Ive replaced mine on my Neptune once. I just cut off the rivets and put small screws in thier place. That was the only repair needed on my Gas model.

March 2000 is the production date on yours

I do hope the issue is minor. I have not opened it up yet to see what's going on. I do remember there being a demo of the sensor indicator lights about 10 years ago at either Lowes or Sears. You basically press on the sensor and the indicator lights come on to indicate the moisture level. I got a feeling the link you posted will come in handy...thanks!

But, how good are these Dryers? Anyone know about these?

Terrific dryer. This was the TOL Atlantis dryer of it's day. I have the Dependable Care version of this dryer I bought in 12/19945.

Just for reference, here is my Neptune dryer on the left before I converted it to the 7500... Look familiar? Anyway internally exact same machine. All that I had go wrong in 10 years were those bearing straps. I am sure it would go another 10 but I found that new one that I upgraded mine with all new internal parts. All the original parts are still in use in the other machine.

As for perfomance I have heard nothing but raves for the electronic drying of the Maytags. We have used the same basic design in Gas since 1985. Traded in the first one after 17 years and now 10 years with the Neptune.

My wife loves hers.

Bob: Have you had any problems with your Maytag dryer?

Nock on wood (or any Norge), the only problem I had was about 8 or 9 months after I bought it, the buzzer went crazy at the end of a load. After that it quit working. Timer was replaced under warranty. I think it's a very accurate dryer, but remember, I'm also a picky sorter for wash loads. My next oldest sister has that exact dryer since new and no problems, but she doesn't do as much laundry as I do either lol.

MT 27" DRYER

A very decent dryer overall, noise problems are usually the belt idler pulley, the rear rollers, the motor itself and if it is the front bearing strips you may need a new front drum cover and drum because by the time it is squalling it is into the metal. Overall still not as durable as a WP 29" or 27" dryer but at least MT fixed the problematic blower wheel that always stripped off the motor shaft with the interduction of the these 27" models. These were the last true MT dryers.

The rollers were a bit dry. I discovered that they were replaced before and the person did not replace one of the spacer/shims, the result, a deep ring the size of the outer diameter of the bushing of the roller, carved into the metal support. THANKS REPAIR GUY!!

Lint everywhere, pulled a big clump from the squirrel cage. Clean now.

Works very well, even better than what it replaced. Very quiet, nothing rattles like the BOL Roper.

Real Maytag vs Whirlpool Dryer

I have Real Maytag Neptune Dryer. I had originally bought Calypso with matching Whirlpool dryer. I loved the Calypso, but hated the dryer; my clothes came out seeming like they had been baked. If I selected lower temp, it took forever.

I figured part of the problem was my fairly long vertical dryer chimney (which had just been cleaned a few months earlier, but still might have been clogged a bit from previous very lousy dryer). I reported my experiences over at GardenWeb and someone suggested I try Maytag dryer instead...it was said to have the most powerful blower.

So I traded the WP dryer for Maytag Neptune dryer, which I have loved ever since. I dry small clothes on Low and heavy towels on Medium, I never use the hottest setting, and yet it works fairly quickly. 9 years later it was still working fine, though getting a bit slower, so I had dryer vent cleaned out again (I know I'm supposed to do that more often).

Works even better with my Duet washer.

Nice reconditioning job! That sure was a mess and you got her going again with some good old maintenance. Those pads may have been replaced already, hence the paint missing on the front, but I wouldnt sweat that, especially if she is quiet and running well.

Too bad about the roller, sometimes it is hard to find good service.
