Keven:

The point I'm trying to make is that the problem is not really with the "christianists", as you call them, or with demagogues of any other stripe. The problem is us, because we listen to them and we allow ourselves to be stirred up by them, and therefore distracted from things that are important. If we are spending our time spluttering at the distasteful rantings of the "christianists" and responding to them in kind, then maybe we aren't devoting enough time to getting acquainted with the real issues, or finding out whose voting record makes them most qualified to govern us as we wish, instead of how the "christianists" wish.

If We the People were not so ready to go ballistic at the drop of Rush's (Neal's, Sean's, Al's) hat, such hats would become far less profitable to drop. If no one listens to you, you don't get votes, and you don't make money.

Imagine the following: A candidate for some Congressional seat or even higher office rips into a campaign audience with fiery words about the threat homosexuals pose to America. He goes on to trash his opposing candidate's morals, judgement, and sanity. He tells you that the principles of his religion - and his religion only - will make America great again. This is a speech we've all heard many times, right?

But now suppose that a neatly-dressed, grey-haired little lady sitting in the middle of Row 8 were to stand up and say, "Well, that's all very well, Mr. Soandso, but what I want to know about is your stand on universal health care and exactly how you intend to bring it about?"

And then suppose that the candidate says, "Well, now, that's a very complex issue, and while we certainly want health care to be available, we can't plunge into anything that burdens employers, the poor, the rich, or the middle class, now can we? The opposition will tell you that they want to do something about health care, but they cannot pay for what they propose, and you shouldn't have to. Those people just want to expand entitlements and give your tax dollars away to people who haven't worked as hard as you." How many times have we all heard this?

At this point, let us say that the neatly-dressed grey-haired lady in Row 8 says - quietly, firmly, with exquisite courtesy - "But Mr. Soandso, that does not answer my question. I want to know how we can have health care, and how you think we should make that happen."

In our imaginations, let's suppose that this was followed by murmurs of appreciation from the rest of the audience. "But, my dear little lady, haven't you heard me?" the candidate says. "I've just told you those people in that other party are nuts! They want to tax you! They want to take away your right to have health care or not, as you choose! They want to go against the principles of our holy writings, which place the virtue of charity to the sick and the dying above all else! Do you want that?"

To which the little neatly-dressed, grey-haired lady in Row 8 says, "Bub, what I want is an answer to my question. How do you intend to give us the health care plan we want?" And the other audience members begin a gentle, but unmistakable rhythmic clapping, chanting softly but purposefully, "Answer! Answer! Answer!"

It would not take too many repetitions of this scenario before the light bulb would go on over the heads of politicians - the rantings, ravings, and blatherings that used to work won't work any more. Led by the little old lady, people were demanding substance on an issue that actually mattered to them, instead of engaging with the politician on his terms.

It's the same with news stories. If people don't comment on the sensational revelations, don't call each other names on blogs because they're trying to be righter than the other guys on the blog, don't buy the magazines with the screaming headlines about a pregnant teen daughter of one candidate and the decades-old, youthful drug experimentation of another candidate, then those stories become unprofitable, and therefore less likely to be part of our public discourse. And again, the light bulb goes on over politicians' heads - the game has changed, and their survival will ultimately demand that they play by the new rules.

So, while I agree with you that the "christianists" certainly have a lot to answer for, so do those of us who empower them. Reasoned, civil demands for change and a refusal to play mudpies with these people might actually get us somewhere. If that sounds naive, remember two things:

1) I like being naive; it makes me feel young. ;-)

2) Playing the game by politicians' rules doesn't work. If ever we needed any proof of that, the past eight years should be all anyone could ask for.

And

the Rev. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson remain quiet. What's up with that????? Mark (except when Jesse was overheard saying that he wanted to cut Obama's balls off) :) Mark

Has anyone here stopped to think about the fact that if Obam

just how long he will be the president.. With all the nut cases that run the streets now. Do you really think he can survive a year or more? You need to look closely at who the VICE PRESIDENT IS as that may be the true president.

Ok folks some things to point out

first off I have to say we should consider the historic position we are in. A Civil War was fought over 150 years ago to settle the "States Rights" question. The South lost the war so the power of individual states has over time since the war become limited.

Since the end of that war anytime a State Governor is elected there is always a big swearing in ceremony. It's good press for the -you name- the State. The newly elected Governor makes a big show of putting his/her hand on the Bible and taking an oath to uphold the laws and values of the respective State
Now go behind the scene. After the new Governor takes that oath to uphold his/her State before all things he/she has to take another oath. To the United States Government.

Before they can actually take the office of Governor they have to swear a second oath to the federal government to uphold the national federal constitution over their respective state constitution.

The reason is that after the civil war Southern State Governors pointed to the fact they had taken an oath to uphold their respective states constitution over everything else. So they were not held as criminals of war by the Federal government when the war ended. They were doing their "duty" as they has so sworn. And under the American Constitution.

OK, my point; When Kennedy was running the nation got up in arms because he was Catholic.

Does anybody here really think this has not been thought out long ago by our government on the question of religion?

What would happen if a person of Hebrew faith was running? Or Buddist or fill in the blank.

My point is the President takes an oath of office. And he must carefully follow that oath. There are markers in place to monitor that he follows the Constitution. There are people in place to make sure it happens (the "second act of government in 1948"). Most people would be astounded to know how well informed our government is of our everyday life. And how well they protect it.

That is why "Dubya" dumbass George Bush got caught trying to go around the constitution. And will go down in history as the worst president. So far.

We are the modern Rome.

Enjoy our Empire all.

We are not a foot note in History but a major player as the American Empire. Our civilization will be compared to the Ancient Empires when all is said and done. And many centuries will pass that study our history.

Has anyone here read the history of the Roman and Greek Empires? Europe, middle ages, ......

Regretfully, and sorry to say, I get lots of hate-mail from folks here because I mention history.

So be it.

I welcome anyone to visit my home and see part of the Revolutionary War years of the nation in the South and post war years in my home. And Civil War....

We have a Country and Nation to get on with.

Vote what you think you need to.

I could counter any argument but none at this point is worth considering.

Vote. And vote your choice.

THERE IS NO SEPARATION OF CHURCH....

...and state in this country. Nor has there ever been. The trick is, and has always been, the nature of the partnerships. “Government by proxy” is an essential method of delivering services to those in need. The key is insuring that the nonprofits that receive government funds, faith based or not, deliver those services without discriminating and without proselytizing.

While I (and I suspect many of y’all) have endured, and fought, discrimination, I still feel obliged to acknowledge the important role that well managed faith based programs have in the “government by proxy” delivery of services. For example, the ability of faith based entities to employ large volunteer back bone to problems is hard to match. I have no twinge of concern when the Salvation Army sets up shop at a local disaster.

And with the exception of fringe, extreme, elements, I have felt that Christian nonprofits are more tolerant, and more likely to object to fundamental extremes, than are, for example, Muslims. And I suspect that is more a result of Christians feeling more permission, among Christians, to decry abuse and to consider tolerance. However, I feel one of any (including Muslim) faith, or no faith at all, should be eligible to hold the highest offices.

With respect to events like 9/11, I would have liked to have seen more moderate Muslim criticism of Muslim extremists. But that does not make, in my view, Muslims ineligible for offices of leadership. And I feel that trying to describe a self-described Christian as a closet Muslim is disingenuous (I am being gentle). It is intolerance that I cannot abide.

Reading everyones answers

I have never seen so much venom being spewed in my life as far as personal attacks on a member that has helped so many people with a hobby they love. The machines and parts and information. The kindness when visiting.I notice so many people are from different parts of the country. We all have different views because of our environments.Elections come and go,but words are not soon forgotten,Thanks Bobby

Thanks Bobby~

It's sad isn't it?..

Fortunately, there are only a few bullies on the site that like to stir the pot and create drama and controversy. The people who have responded rudely or have attacked others have tarnished their image and reputations. I have gotten many emails from other members who agree with my sentiments. It is a shame however that they are too afraid of speaking out here on the threads in fear of being banned. I, for one, love this site and respect Robert greatly, but I will also speak my mind, especially when my character is attacked.

When one member accuses me of using 9/11 and my personal experience against me and another underhandedly accuses me of racism because I am a Conservative Democrat backing McCain, that is where I draw the line.

Yes, I agree.. Mark is a wonderful guy and as recently as tonight, extended an invite to me to come to his home for a visit. I plan to take him up on his invite very soon. Robert, too, has been most gracious in his time and dedication to this site or any help I have ever needed.
While I am pretty certain where Robert stands politically, he is POLITE and MATURE enough to not attack others for their opinions.

It is a shame that Panthera, yes, you Keven have to continue to attack conservative gays and "christianists" as you put it. You have managed to turn this Super Forum into a political attack board. Congratulations on a job well done.

How can anyone here claim tha Christians are so cruel and hatefull?????Evidently nobody here knows of any true Christians.WE DO NO JUDGE ANYBODY! The choices you make are your own and God is the only true judge of them.I,myself ,as many of the original members know, went to Hell and back.first with my fight with epilepsy and the physical, mental and sexual abuse I had growing up.Then, without any warning, going down to 97 pounds.my so called friends marked me an A.I.D.S victim and damned me for dead.the only ones who stayed there and helped me through were my Christian friends and family.Never, never have they ever judged me.All they have done for me is to be there to make sure I pulled through.Their love, understanding, compassion, care and forgiveness is everflowing, everlasting and real. The real true christians do not judge, they pray for our salvation. They don't always agree with other's lifestyles and/or choices their friends and family have made in work, love and life. They are not going to feal or claim they are any better than anyone else.People who claim to be and boast there"Christianity'by going to church all dolled up to outdress their fellow church members and give to charities to show they 'care'but are sure their donations are going to be recognised and publisized ARE NOT TRUE BELIEVERS!!!!They are wolves in sheep's clothing.God does not know them.He will not recognise them either.Just let go and let God.

I don't want to get involved in a contentious argument here, however, I am familiar with most of the accusations about Obama, including the claim that he is a secret moslem, and they have all been debunked.

If you want to hear his side, then go to his web site and look for the "Fight the Smears" link. I'll try to include it below as well.

He also has a 40 page rebuttal to Corsi's recent smear book. Corsi is a professional smear artist who has tried to sully the reputations of democrats and republicans alike.

I watched the video and that is EXACTLY why I'm voting for Obama!. It's beliefs and talk espoused in that clip that make me ill. Mark, you are free to vote for McCain, but my vote cancels yours. I just hope there are enough other R votes canceled so we don't have to deal with a person like McCain and the PLT mom Palin for 4 years.

The more I read about Palin the more upset I get. The fact that McCain would pick a woman like that truly exposes his lack of understanding of a great many people in this country. He has no desire to be the President of the United States, He wants to be the President of the Christian United States. I have little to no shared values or beliefs with him or her. I'm not christian and I'm beginning to feel unwelcome in my own country.

Good Night My Love

Perhaps it is time to let a sleeping dog get some rest, everyone has the right to express their feelings on subjects.Isnt it time to get back to appliances? Remember,Fridaire,Kenmore,Easy, etc.Last but not least, the first time a hand comes out of my monitor and makes me buy something,I will put the top on the Jack Daniels and throw it in the nearest dumpster.Night night

And The Media Is No Help Either . . .

As many here have noted, this election is more of a non-stop contest for smear artists than anything else. I blame mass-market media for this; if they'd only answer the questions we really want anwered, like what sort of laundry equipment does each candidate have in his or her house!

How the heck does that show he's got Islamic leanings?!

I just watched that video and how the heck does that show any Islamic leanings AT ALL?

To me it just says that the guy believes in the ideals of secularism and a proper division between church (religion) and the state. This is what's in the US constitution and is the basic principle that divides modern secular liberal democracies (including the US, European Countries, Australia, NZ, Canada, and most of the developed world) from our Islamic fundementalist cousins in the middle east!

I mean, all the guy is saying is that you cannot directly apply the bible to the legal system or running the country.
The US may be predominantly Christian, but it is NOT, nor should it ever become a Christian Fundementalist theocracy. If you want that, become a Catholic Priest and go live in the Vatican!

Granpa came to this country for the democracy. Little did he

For you, Petek.

Let them all eat coc...er....cake.

And remember dear (sarcastically/sardonically) [sp?]
"G-d bless America"

Oooh cake.. I'll have some

We don't want any of that rote hollow God Blessing here thank you very much !!!
You'd think God must be getting awful tired of the endless requests to Bless America by now. Hasn't he done it already?
How many times is he supposed to do it? Do his nation blessings have a shelf life and expire like a carton of milk?
These are questions I want answers to!!!!

Neologism

Mark, I don't recall attacking you personally.
I am enormously furious with the way the republicans have treated homosexuals.
I am as angry as one can be about the way some people have abused the Christian religion to advance their agenda of hatred and abuse towards others, including homosexuals.
The neologism 'christianist' was compounded several years ago (obviously not by me) to differentiate between Christians and those whose end goal is our torture and death.
I can understand being fiscally conservative and a strict constitutionalist. That's what I am. What I can not understand is how a gay man can support the republican party in 2008. These people have chosen a person for VP who is a member of an organized group which seeks secession from the United States. They are closely aligned with a group which wants to overthrow the constitution of the United States and replace it with theocratic fascism.
As long as people are permitted free expression in this country, I shall continue to do so. If people such as yourself actually succeed in electing people who have sworn to debase the US Constitution, then I shall continue to protest...until your version of the SS comes to silence me.
For a gay man to embrace people whose expressed goal is to torture and murder them is pathological.
