Something I read on the internet that's disgusting

Hi guys,
I read something on the internet that's disgusting to me. It talks about how you should never, ever wash your jeans unless you really have to. That's nasty, not to mention very unsanitary.
How can people stoop to this level? I don't have time to baby my jeans or freeze them or treat them like a fancy suit. I don't know you, but I will continue to use the normal cycle with warm or cold water depending on the color content as I've always done.
I do my laundry once a week, that includes jeans with the color content that matches. For example, I wash dark blue jeans with the darks, and light blue ones with light colors.
It's like we've gone from washing jeans on the delicates cycle to not washing them at all. No thank you. Normal cycle is just fine with me. I've never had any issues with the cotton cycle.

I didn't thoroughly read the article, though I remember reading similar.

It strikes me as something for people who don't work but have money to waste on fads and fashion statements.

I don't have evidence to prove this, but I suspect dirt and bacteria wear down denim fabric about as much as washing does. At least I seem to remember my mother saying clean clothes last longer.

I buy cheap jeans that I think last about as long as expensive fashion brands, I work and play in them, then I wash them. I avoid anything that doesn't recommend machine washing.

I've never been a cool fashionable guy, but at least I don't stink.

Having been stuck in a check out line at the store many times behind people that smell like anything from under arm B.O., lingering fart fumes, either alcohol or cigarette abuse or both sweating through their pores, to raw unkempt ass I can see how there are some people out there that not only dont believe in washing themselves but their clothes as well never see water.

As a registered nurse in a hospital, I can attest to the number of people out there who don't know what a bar of soap is!  And the funny fact is that most of them can afford their beer and cigs but they don't buy shampoo, soap, or deodorant.

cleanliness

I care about cleanliness. I don't stink either, and I do not wash anything that's not machine washable. Not washing jeans... Give me a break! My parents would KILL me if they found out that I didn't wash my jeans.
I promise you, if I did get a girlfriend, and she never washed her jeans, we are breaking up. I will never put my reputation for cleanliness in jeopardy.

The thing about not washing jeans, or washing infrequently, is not new.  I recall it was touted several years ago.  I imagine the advice is aimed primarily at fashionistas and white-collar ... not truck drivers, farmers, mechanics, veterinarians, and such.

I would be disgusted just being a few feet away from these people. Apparently, they're either too rich or too lazy to do laundry, or both.

I read something about never washing your jeans years ago. Utterly revolting. Hell, I wouldn't even reuse wash water. No suds saver washer for me.

 

Some people are just disgusting. That's all. Be it with themselves, their clothes and/or their homes. Sad part is, there's nothing we can do about it other than to make a hasty retreat.

That's worse than washing jeans on a gentle cycle. I mean, what is wrong with this society? If I was in front of these people, I will have loads and loads to say. No pun intended. I will continue to take it with a pod of tide.
Have these people ever heard of using the normal cycle and switching the temp to cold?

It does sound disgusting but on the other hand 100 years ago overalls probably didn't go thru the wringer everyday.
Mrs Walton probably didn't wash 7 or 9 pairs of overalls or jeans everyday.
Probably didn't wash 10 pairs of underwear everyday either.

And Olivia Walton got her first washer that Ben got her, an old wringer washer from a more wealthier person by working it off . Scrubboards before that for Olivia and Grandma for that entire household and probably the same Granny Clampets Lye soap. LOL

not washing jeans

I wouldn't even stand my jeans up. I'd just put them in the laundry like a normal person and wash them every week. I have plenty of jeans.
How did we get from counseling dirt out of them to not washing them at all?

I wash my jeans, or anything else for that matter, after one wear. Doesn't matter if I have the day off and hypothetically never leave the house the entire day (which is very rare). Wife does as well. I couldn't imagine wearing something several times before washing it, or never washing it, or sticking it in a freezer instead of washing it.

Some people are disgusting, it's like the article I read about the average person washes bedsheets every couple of months, vacuums once every couple of weeks, etc. Oh, and wearing shoes indoors -- apparently it's normal for people to wear shoes in their house vs. not -- that sends shivers up my spine. No offense to people who do wear shoes in the house, but ewwwww!

@askolover my wife is an RN as well and has come home with some really disgusting and descriptive tales about how some patients avoided a shower like the plague. Often as we're both sitting down to dinner, lol. I don't know how she does it. Oftentimes her patients are already bathed before they get to her as they go through (heart) surgery as she's CICU, but not always.

I wear my jeans and all other pants 3 to 4 days in a row and wash them warm at 40° in a normal cycle.
After a messy job like an oil change or similar I`d even wash them in hot water at 60°.

Wearing fashionable clothes and getting them really clean is not a contradiction to me, that`s what fast fashion brands and end of season sales are for.
If things wear out a bit faster the financial damage is still manageable.

I understand if someone spends a crazy amount like $ 200 or even more for a pair of jeans they don`t want them ruined after a couple of washes.
What I don`t get is why the article doesn`t recommend taking those jeans to the dry cleaner`s. Would be way more sanitary than washing infrequently in cold with very little detergent on the gentle cycle, freezing or not washing at all.
You`d think if someone can afford really expensive clothes then they should have the money for proper care as well.

Even if I had expensive jeans...

I would use the normal cycle with warm water at most or cold water at least. I am not convinced that jeans should be washed on gentle.

Much ado about nothing. Just because you read something on the internet about washing or not washing jeans doesn’t mean you need to heed this advice. Use your own good commonsense and experience and you won’t go wrong.

BTW, this idea about not washing jeans has been around for decades. In the 50’s some guys used to wear a brand new pair of jeans in the shower and then let them dry on their body while wearing them. This was supposed to have a two fold benefit, one they would dry conforming your body and not shrink and two they wouldn’t fade. Then in the late 70’s and early 80’s when designer jeans hit the market washing jeans was frowned upon. People didn’t want them to fade or fray. But then those that were against washing jeans at least had them dry cleaned.

When I was in HS during the mid to late 60’s we always washed our new Levi 501’s at least 2 or 3 times before wearing them so they wouldn’t be so stiff, shrink to fit better and they would fade a bit so they didn’t look brand new.

I’ve always washed my Levi’s or jeans in hot water on the normal cycle. And I wear my jeans for 5-7 days before washing them, unless I’ve done some exceptionally dirty work or perspired profusely. I change my underwear daily so the jeans aren’t coming into contact with any body soil. When I was still working I washed my jeans after the second wearing.

Back in the early 70’s most guys my age went commando and didn’t wear underwear at all. Then I would wash my jeans after 1 or 2 wearings depending upon what I’d been up to.

I’ve always preferred my Levi’s or jeans softer and more faded than dark indigo blue. They are just more comfortable that way.

The one thing I really don’t get is this new distressed look for jeans with the ripped knees and tears in other areas. And they pay sometimes over a $100 for this Salvation Army Thrift shop look.

The first round of this trend started in the 1980's. I didn't understand then and still don't understand it now.

common sense

I am going to stick with my own common sense. To preserve color, I just use cold water with dark jeans. I've never washed them inside out and they came out just fine. As for the dryer, I found that the heavy duty cycle wasn't necessary as the normal cycle provides a happy medium.
I won't let anyone try to council me on how to wash. I know what I'm doing. I can use the normal cotton wash and adjust the machine to cold, using a heavy duty laundry detergent and still look presentable. Medium heat on the dryer is just over 140 degrees fahrenheit with optimal results. Although jeans are slightly damp around the very edges, I am okay with it. They still have plenty of life and don't need to be bone dry.
