It lists a pre-rinse and first wash, a second rinse, a second wash heated to 145F, if selected, a third rinse, 145F, if selected, and drying. I was not aware of one after rinse machines in the early 60s. My guess is that they did not want a rinse between the heated wash and the heated rinse to cool the dishes by a fill with water that had been sitting in the lines for the considerable time it took to heat the second wash to 145F. Throwing that water on the 145F dishware only cooled it enough to slightly delay the cycle for heating, maybe.

This dishwasher

Tom I think this dishwasher is a little unusual. When Westinghouse had the little screen cup detergent dispenser, they had a wash and 2 rinses. When they advanced to the tilt out dispenser, they offered a double wash. Wash, rinse, wash and 2 rinses. I did find that some of the cheaper top loaders did still have the wash, 2 rinse cycle. Maybe they had the screen cup. I do not believe that Westinghouse offered a top loader with the new wash arm system in the US. They did have it in Canada but the final US top loaders were D&M built. A late model pull out Westinghouse dishwasher is the only appliance I still want to find.

Steve, do you mean the one with the very plain front and the little dial that was released after the wash arm machines were introduced by Westinghouse? We have one. It might be in the dishwasher wall at the Belchville museum, but if it is, being a rollout, it would have to be on the bottom level of the wall. I restored the machine and used it for a while. It needed a new drain pump because it leaked. I glued sound insulation on the tub and tub cover as well as inside the cabinet.

Do you think that the machine in the ad was a D&M?

Happy Holidays!

Tom, I remember seeing a pic of yours after one of the gatherings. They made that model in 1965-66 as a basic unit. I bet they made a bunch as I have an ad for them stating "1968 close-out sale". When they introduced the drop door models in 1963, they still offered a pull-out unit for a few years.
The machine in the ad is a true Westinghouse with the impeller wash system. I believe the D&M models came out in 1967. Westingouse made both impeller and wash arm top load portables for the Canadian market I think till the end of the '60's.
And Happy Holidays to you as well!

I'll bet they were made for the replacement market in rental properties, but I considered them to be elegant looking with that flat front panel and with that double dose detergent dispenser, they washed well, if you remembered that the tiny drain pump did not dispose of solids really well like GE's bowtie impeller machines.
