...whatever became of the sulfur light-saw these demonstrated on TV some 10-12 yrs ago,but have never seen one-I kinda recall Tesla made some wireless sulfur lights in the early 1900s...

Last I knew the Sulphur lamp is still around-its an interesting device.A company called Fusion Systems came up with it.It consists of a sealed, round quartz bulb with a small amount of sulphur in it.The bulb is on a rotating shaft-this spreads the sulphur evenly in the bulb while the lamp is on for consistent light. The bulb is excited by microwaves-a common magnetron tube used in larger microwave ovens. The bulb has no electrodes-the sulphur is ionized by the microwaves-the lamp puts out an erie-greenish-yellow-white light. One of the Smithsonian Museums uses the lamp as a parking lot light. The actual "lamp" is at one end a light conductive tube.Fusion also makes mercury vapor UV curing lamps-hence their name. They are based in Rockville,Md-near Wash DC.Toured their factory once-was fascinating.I beleive other companies are trying out the Sulphur lights.Due to the reactive nature of sulphur the bulb is electrodeless. It is worse on electrodes than sodium.

Why do they insist upon the 2.4GHz band, which is most commercially sensitive? Surely a magnetron can be made to osculate (sic) at some less-objectionable frequency. And why do I have to think of EVERYthing?

The fusion lights and microwave ovens do not "radiate" or "transmit" as devices like cell phones,Wi-Fi and such. These things are RF sheilded so the RF energy does not escape.IE the screen in the microwave oven door window-and the "choke joint" under the rubber door seal. There is a screen of sorts in front of the Sulphur lamp to prevent RF radiation-but the light passes thru. And the Magnetron generator is sheilded.I haven't heard of any cases of microwave ovens or the Fusion systems Sulphur and Mercury lights causing interference.

sulphur lights

those are more complex than I thought-watched some on youtube, seems they are more popular in Europe.I will look for my tesla books for info on his wireless HF driven lights.

I can do the "wireless" light tricks at the transmitter site-If one of our 500Kw transmitters is on-this one not on now-but when it is-you can hold a "U" flourescent bulb just out the building back door and the bulb lights up from the RF feild under the transmitters open balun-device that converts 50Ohm impedence to 300 ohm blanced inpedence to match the transmission line to the antenna in the feild.I have done this with flourescent bulbs at other stations-amuses the neighborhood kids-they think its magic!Try to explain to them-guess best to say "its magic"Me and another guy were playing "frisbee" with a circlular flourescent bulb in a towerfeild-the station was a 50Kw AM in Wash,DC.This was pretty much like what Mr Tesla was doing at that time-before the idea of using radio waves to transmit intellegence.Have a small Tesla coil-transmits onbly a few feet. Its good for testing for gas in vacuum tubes-or flourscent or HID bulbs.

Pics of Electronic Stuff

Go to YouTube and type in searches for "VOA Edward Murrow Transmitter station","VOA Greeville,NC Transmitter stations",On internet-Try "Jim Hawkins Radio World"He has some excellent picture tours of various commercial radio stations and VOA transmitter sites. Also on the internet try RCA Broadcaasdt Equipment,Gates Radio,Harris,Continental Electronics(They built some of the transmitters where I work)Thales Electronics,AEG Telefunken,Brown Bovorei,I have some pictures-they are in Radio books and catalogs. And I have some VHS tapes I filmed with an old VHS Camcorder.Don't have the gear to transfer them to the computer.Other things to look up-"VOA Bethey Ohio, transmitter site"Closed in 1995,one of the Greenville transmitter sites was closed in 2006.The Black Jack,NC station is the only VOA tranmsitter station still operating in the US.Delano,California is another closed plant-the Jim Hawkins site may have pictures of it.These can give you an idea.Have worked in VOA Wash DC plant-studios-and all three of the Greenville,NC sites. One of them was a "receive" site-it received p[rogram material from Wash DC site and distributed it to the two transmitter sites-Bear Grass,NC(Closed) and Black Jack,NC-still in use-where I am.

It sounds like interesting technology, but I guess it's probably a bit impractical for most lighting uses compared to normal lighting.

Wireless power's still a bit of a 'holy grail' that hasn't quite been reached. Tesla's experiments were certainly interesting though.

Can you imagine what the anti-mobile phone tower protestors would be saying if someone decided to launch the first wirelessly powered washing machines and dishwashers hehe

I don't get the thing about "anti cell phone tower protesters"when broadcast towers of all types are all around us-some people don't even notice them! But I guess the anti cell phone folks will scream if there were no phone towers-their phone won't work!Wired phones may use towers sometime in their operation-microwave relay towers-these go cross country!

Well you've NIMBYs (not in my back yard) and also a problem we have here quite a bit BANANAs Build Absolutely Nothing anywhere Near Anyone/Anything.

Some of the arguments I'm hearing against wind turbines for example are really pushing beyond ridiculous.

I can understand someone wouldn't like one right on top of them or spoiling a really scenic location but I was hearing people coming out with stuff about how they apparently emit EMF fields and how the optical flicker caused by their moving blades can cause various issues.. I mean if that were the case Irish people would be very badly impacted upon by constantly changing light levels due to the large number of fluffy white clouds passing overhead all the time!.

We've also got a lot of issues with people wanting hundreds of miles of 400kV power lines put underground.

I'm all for hiding them in scenic areas and designing overhead runs with minimal visual impact but you hear people saying things like ' in every other country all the power lines are underground...'

The cost of putting major transmission lines underground is absolutely astronomical as it's nearly like laying subway (metro) rail tunnels. It's nothing like burying low voltage cables that serve homes.

But, you might as well argue with a brick wall as talk about costs or the fact that there's nothing showing the lines are dangerous and we've been using them since the late 19th century!

There's a balance between sensitively developing stuff and just blocking absolutely everything. Modern life needs wires and transmitters!

Best one I heard was a guy complaining about EMF from a fibre optic line buried in the road outside! He really needed to suit Physics 101…

I also find it amusing that the same folks who freak out about EMF from electricity lines are the very came people who think nothing about burning wood, turf and other traditional solid field. There is a very provable health risk with incomplete combustion in your stove or fireplace. It's not very dangerous, but it's far more likely to be carcinogenic than your local mobile phone tower or power line.

Going out in the sun is also vastly more dangerous!

Total lack of perspective on these things!

Power windmills-No real problems other than a "wooshing" sound of the blades spinning in the wind.On VERY RARE occasion the blade feathering gear can fail-causing the windmill to overspeed and fly apart from high winds.-But this is so rare. And the windmill towers could present a hazard to migrating birds-but we need the power. There is no EMF near the windmill tower. Most of it is nonmetal anyway!the one of fiber optic lines generating EMF is a good one-lets all laugh it up in that guys face!If you looked into an operating fiber optic line--the light might temperarily blind you-otherwise no damage.

Heard of the danger of the wind turbines to birds. That is not a good thing-on YouTube they show a video of a vulture getting hit by a windmill blade.Any form of power generation has its hazards to man and ecosystem. The windmills are just one soruce of power-not consistent as man wants-but can help.Just need a way to keep birds away from the windmill propellers.

I wonder what happened to a wind turbo I saw a couple of years ago. It was shaped like a turbo blower for a big diesel truck engine. It was small mounted atop a pole and the generator was at the bottom. These were supposed to be available to everyone to supplement their power requirements. They were supposed to be silent and able to handle any speed of wind. They were supposed to cause minimal damage to birds because of the design. The birds would see these and avoid them such as chimneys on houses, not like the large layout of windmills. We have a large windmill in sight of my house and it has been turned off because of peoples complaints about the sound. I guess it must have been a buffering noise. Out in the other direction there are 3 running out on the end of a peninsula leading out to the ocean. Probably one of the oil companies or a power company bought the patent for the turbine generator.

We have wondered a bit off topic but I have to comment on the hazards to birds from wind turbines. Indeed this hazard exists and it is directly relatable to its cause.

But how does the burning of fossil fuels or even hydroelectric generation alter the lives of wildlife? Just because the birds aren't laying on the ground at the base of the coal burning smoke stack doesn't mean that perhaps man's influence didn't cause harm.

I don't say this to marginalize the potential harm from wind power, nor to denigrate the coal industry, only to bring up the inconsistency of convenience.
