I had a question about my SQ that it only 6 months old. This afternoon I got ready to do a small load and I turned the knob to the regular cycle and once the machine filled it would not do anything but make this buzzing/humming noise-- almost like something was trying to start but would not. So I turned it to the other cycles to see if it would start and it continued the same noise. So I unplugged the washer for a few minutes. Plugged in back in and it hummed a few seconds and then started running normally. Is this a timer about to go bad? It worked fine for my 2nd load too.

Sounds to me like maybe a bad capacitor?
Humming SQ TL Washer
If it does it again see if the motor will run in the spin cycle, if not it is likely a problem in the motors centrifugal switch which normally requires a new motor. changing a motor is a fairly simple job and the motor has a 5 year part warranty with the first 3 years including repair labor.

It Did it again
Just my luck-- a washer that is 5 months old and supposed to be of great quality has quit again. It did the same thing tonight- was washing then quit and just hummed. Fortunately after unplugging it and resting it for about 15 min, it started again- when the water pumped out and it finished spinning, i turned it off and it won't be used again until the repairman comes. I just hope I don't have trouble getting one to come. Huntsville is a relatively large city ($200,000 people plus) but no authorized Speed Queen repair people according to their website. The closest authorized repair guy is 30 miles from here- I guess I'll find out how good Speed Queen Customer service is.

It's Fixed
George (the Speed Queen Repairman) was here today and fixed my washer. When I called on Monday, he said he had several machines that have had bad timers on them-- that was my problem. He said he thought Speed Queen must have had a bad batch of them they used in manufacturing their machines a few months back. Of course, those timers are imported.

Buzzing/Humming here too !!!!
I'm glad I found this post, as I too, was not overly thrilled with my machine only being about a week old, with the EXACT same problem. I will wait and see as you did. I did call SQ, and talked to a very friendly, (human), knowlegable tech, who also thought the timer was going bad. He DID however state, that they (SQ) would probably recommend to the tech to replace the motor as well, due to it being loaded like that.
I have not set up a tech appt. yet, and have done 3 loads since, with no issues. I will report back if it does, and if the timer only fix works, or if I need to do the motor as well.

Our AWN412 has had zero problems since we bought it last year. The only issue my wife has had is since the spin speed is slower then the old front loader the cloths come out a bit wetter but my wife still loves the fact that the white clothing is coming clean without the graying.
BROKEN AGAIN
My SQ AWN512 is broken again. This washer is 7 months old and has had the timer and motor replaced. Today it finished filling and then starting humming and no agitation. Humming quit and then it started to smell like an electrical fire. I immediately unlplugged it. Let is sit for 20 min and then it would start again,but all I did is let the water pump out and its shut down now. I'm not sure what my dealer will do now, but I sure don't trust this washer. At what point do they quit replacing parts and replace the machine. If I had not paid $650 for it, i would chunk it and get me a DD Wirlpool off of Craigslist. May end up doing that anyway.

Hopefully, all of these bad timers will clear the channel and all of you with this kind of problem will get replacement timers which don't have this problem.
At least this company does stand behind their products, it's just a shame that they're having quality control issues with their timers.
I'm sure someone within Alliance will rectify this quickly. Their new washers use electronic control, maybe you could get an upgrade?

It could be a timer or another motor problem, hopefully they will send out someone that can really check this washer out properly, Good Luck.
Bud, it was a motor that fixed it last time and we have yet to have replaced a timer in warranty in any of the nearly 100 SQ TL Washers we sell each year.

Recently my AWN542 began making a noise while agitating. I had a repairman out, he replaced the belt and drive pulley after four years, and lubricated the brakes as per Alliance, and knock wood...........
But be patient, they are a stand-up company, and the techs on the phone are very knowledgable. They seem to know these machines inside and out, and since they are the last of their kind available on the market, their sales have definitely increased, as I am sure this site had something to do with it! So be patient, I know it's hard, but Alliance will help you.

Speed Queen have been busy establishing ties with (what's left of) indie dealerships. The local Whirlpool / LG dealership in my little village recently brought SQ on board. Maybe this is why SQ is available in so many small towns---they actually have indie dealerships. At any rate, bully for SQ! Long may they continue to make a traditional top-loader.

My dealer is a super guy-- He took the Speed Queen back and gave me a refund. He talked with SQ and they have had a problem with timers. My dealer offered me a new machine but he is waiting on an order to come in and it will be a while before he gets it. I bought me a 10 yr old Kitchen aid off Craigslist and it works great-- other than a loud clunking when it agitates. I'll run it until it dies. My SQ dealer said he'd be glad to service it.

I love the KitchenAid. It has the gentler 3 speed motor that your typical whirlpool does't have. And as you all know the larger agitator. I like it and I plan on wearing it out. I hope it lasts a long time, and you know parts are very easy to find.
