Hello,

I converted from a mondern front loader to a Speed Queen AWN542 top load washer, which I love so far.

I've been using it for several months now and I thought I'd be satisfied with the factory water height, but having used it for a while I defintitely think the water height could be higher.

I already know how to adjust the height and I've adjusted it with cloths and when the washer is not running with clothes it's about 1.5 inches from rim lip where is tub starts to curve if this makes sense, my questions are:

Should water adjustmet be done with clothes or empty?

How high should the water go in the tub? I've seen a few video on youtube and most seem to say right below the lip before tub starts to curve inward, but this video shows the washer running empty and water fill stops about 3 inches from the lip, which is very similar to mine.

Lastly, I'm not really familiar with mechanics of the tub assembly and I'm worried if the water is too high as in right up to the botton of the lip that water will leak out of the water onto the floor when the agitation starts because the water will rise and splash around when it sloshes. Hope this make sense, I'm probably splitting hairs, but I want to get the most out of my washer.

Thanks for any help.

My AWNE82 (the new electronic model) is set from the factory to fill to the last row of holes from the top, and that's where it should be.

I've never heard of adjusting it with clothes in it. Clothes or no clothes should make no difference.

@gusherb

Last row being right below the lip correct? Also when the water sloshes around during agitation is it ok that some of the water overflows over the top of the stainless steel tub lip?

BTW, how do you like the electronic control version? I wanted to wait for it but I needed a washer and I couldn’t wait, the newer model came out 2 months after I got mine. I heard the water fills higher from my research and rinse cycle is a spray to saver water.

Thanks

You can check it out in my thread.

and here's the video of it on the Heavy Duty cycle with the max water level. The electronic controls are so far fantastic. The only cycle that uses the spray rinse is the Normal Eco, everything else is a deep tub rinse.

I have the water level of my AWN542 adjusted so that it tops out right on the top row of holes. If you have it set lower than that and you have water sloshing over the top of the stainless inner tub I have to wonder if your machine is leveled properly.

I suggest that anyone interested in changing the water level in this machine be careful to not damage the water level sensor mechanism. Before you put a wrench on the level adjustment bolt, familiarize yourself with how this simple mechanism works. The bolt that you will tighten pushes on a small plate. Find that plate and gently push it with your finger just enough to remove the pressure from the bolt and THEN turn the bolt a couple of tuns while it has no stress on it. Using this simple technique could save you a costly mistake. Go slowly and don't rush anything. Two turns and check the fill level and if needed add two more turns and repete this process until the fill level is where you want it.

Don't envy the people who are buying into the touch panels just yet. I hope that the Speed Queen touch panels last them many happy years but I personally won't ever again own a washing machine that has a touch panel . After the nightmare I went through with a Fisher & Paykel machine I bought my Speed Queen AWN542 precisely because it has old school mechanical controls.

Also, because of the mechanical controls on the AWN542 I was able to modify my machine to have a rinse temperature that automaticly matches whatever wash temperature setting I choose which I assume is not the case with the new touch panel machines. If I'm wrong about having that option or rather the absence of that option on the new touch panel machines I hope someone will correct me.

If anyone reading this is interested in the rinse temp mod use the link below.

My washing machine is level, my question regarding the sloshing was in regards to when the machine is runng water turbulance can happen depending on how fast the water is running a little can splash and get over the lip of the rim.

If water goes over the lip of the rim I imagine that it's designed to catch the water because of the out tub correct? Which is no different that water passing through the hold of the tub.

I was just trying to understand because I don't think any water going over the the top of the inner tub would be sent onto the floor.

Just being paranoid.

Thanks for your feed back thusfar.

Beautiful machine! I noticed that although on the Heavy Duty cycle light soil, the first spin was at low speed and the final spin at the full 710 rpm's. Does it depend on the soil level you select that will determine the speed of the first spin? Would Heavy Duty + medium or heavy soil produce a 710 rpm on the first spin?

The first spin after the wash cycle is always low speed no matter which cycle or soil level. Everything else is high spin on the heavy duty and Normal Eco settings including the spin after a prewash. I think this has to do with the spray rinse after the wash cycle, it does a 50 second spray rinse in the Heavy Duty cycle, and 3 spray rinses in the Normal Eco cycle. I also wonder if that low spin after a wash has something to do with preventing suds overflow from the standpipe (which I never had a problem with in the Raytheon Amana).
