Speed Queen AWS44NW Tub Seal Replacement Issue

When I aquired this machine water pours out the bottom seal. The bearing is not yet loud, but it is not worth the risk to reuse. What I was finding is that during a spin, this bearing was moving around loosly on the outer tub hole, and I am at a loss as to what holds it from moving around. Is it just the 3M-560 sealer that locks it into place? The only parts I have taken off is the agitator and stainless tub. I have NOT yet taken the nut off. I am baffled.....

Hello,

When the bearing is worn, that you show, and thrust washers in the tranny, your end play becomes a factor.

After you tear this down, and replace the seal/bearing (shown), and tighten your lock nut, all should be well.

So I got it tore down but my camera died, so here is the deal, the hole in the tub is elongataed, and the bearing no longer fits in the hole snug like in the video. Can anyone confirm if the outer tub is under warranty? If not, this washer is nothing but scrap! It is close the $300 online.

I would assume so, if there is a lifetime warranty on the outer tub, it should apply here, the outer tub failed because of a fault of the washer. Seems like older ones had a 10 year warranty on the outer tub, not 100% sure though. Call a Speed Queen dealer and ask. Keep us updated!

The warranty document provided on SQ's web site for the model of question states Lifetime limited warranty on the stainless steel tub and outer tub against rust or corrosion.  Leaking from the bearing seal technically is not a material failure of the tub but wear/deformity such that fit of a replacement bearing is impacted could be considered as such.  However, that's not rust or corrosion (which typically such coverage is intended in regards to failure to hold water) ... so remains to be determined what is SQ's interpretation of the situation.

UPDATE:

After talking with speed queen tech support, they did agree it is under warranty. The bad new was, none of my locals shops / parts dist / or dealer would get involved. I found a really cool place online called PWS Laundry based out of California. They first verified the warranty, and shipped me the replacement tub. I pay shipping both directions and it should be no problem as not only is there rot around the bearing, but around the weld seam as well.

If you have a commercial machine, or a residental machine in commercial environment, it would not have been under warranty.

Excellent that SQ came through on the part warranty.  However, there's a definite pattern of local dealers & servicers refusing to do SQ warranty repairs.  Interesting they're shipping the tub to you for DIY install.  Does the warranty coverage continue onto the replacement tub?

Wow this is sad to see. When one pays a sizable premium for a consumer good, based in part, or perhaps solely on the warranty, then having to jump through hoops to recieve proper customer service...well that only reinforces in the customer that the best deal is the cheaper deal, as instincts tell us:
"Well it broke, good thing i didn't pay much, i'll just get another."
So yes, great, HQ is on your side, but why not the dealers?
And how can one's take away be anything other than:
if you buy SQ better not move, or better hope your dealer stays in business, cause to the other SQ dealers you're dirt.

Another case of SQ dealers shirking the duties Alliance has authorized them to perform.

 

It seems John L. is the only servicer out there that readily provides warranty parts or repairs.

 

I don't get why Alliance hasn't addressed this issue.  It's not uncommon, nor is it isolated to one particular part of the country.

My recent experience with Alliance has not been stellar - they seem to be less interested in dealing with issues. My 9 year old SQ toploader is now on its third timer and all they could tell me was that "when you use one cycle most of the time, this can cause unusual wear patterns on the timer (what was happening was that there was an unusually long pause between the rinse agitation and spin so that the spin was way too short and required me to run another spin cycle). The point of my contacting them was I didn't think I should have to replace a timer twice in 9 years of single person use and asked if they could at least help defray some of the cost. I had a GE Filter Flo for 20 years and interestingly enough I never had to replace the timer.

Still happy with the machine, but still...

In all fairness I am not the original purchaser, and local shops keep records. For them to givem me a part under warrenty would cost them man hours. I am doing the job myself because I am mechanical, and do not want to pay someone to do it. I could probably chip in an additional 1/4th and have a new one by the time I pay labor alone. The job is involved!

To conclude this thread, I will attach some pics and cover just a few points in case someone wants to do this job:

1. The outer tub and stainless inner tub has lifetime warranty, you have to search for a dealer willing. I chose PWS Laundery in califonia.
2. Fluid film brushed on the seam of the outer tub, the sping mounts, and thru holes will sure keep the rust from starting. Use it heavy where the bolt plates touch the tub, then after assembly, brush some more over the bolt heads and plates again.
3. I decided to leave the cabinet off and work 360 degrees around the base on the unit, until the job was finished, then wrapped the cabinet around it for final assembly.
4. I think there is a special grease for the suspension springs, I just used fluid film. Im sure it will be ok.

You do not need to use any anti-corrosion materials around the holes where the suspension braces mount to a SQ TL washers outer tub, unlike a MT helical drive washer no part of these bolts and hole in the outer tub ever touch water.

 

SQs outer tub design is much better that MTs for this reason, even Norge had the better design of not having the suspension bolts trying to hold water, LOL.

 

Your repaired SQ will probably run a long time, however I would have installed a NEW transmission if I wanted the washer to be as good as new and last a really long and run as quietly as a new one, SQs transmissions  are not one of the better transmissions ever used in a TL washer.

If you look at my photo 2 & 3, I show fluid film gunked all over the mounting plates, and the motor mount. I am aware these do not hold water, however the old tub was really rusty in those spots. Not only did the tub rot from the inside to the point the bearing & seal broke loose, but if that had lasted approx 5 more yrs, the external rust would have worked its way in. Also where the springs hook onto the tub, SQ puts a thick nasty grease as I saw on my 2013 AWN412SP. I just used fluid film again there. The old tub was rotted where the springs go as well.

As far as the tranny, i was thinking about that, it was not under warranty. Only the tub. I really only have $44.95 for the hub/lip seal kit, and $16 for the tube of 3M-560 sealant. Plus about $50 for all the shipping with the tub and small parts. The tub cost a lot for shipping, but as with any and all companies these days, warranties typically do not include shipping & handling.

Although it is a little sloppy, Im not quite convinced it is not the brake rotor loose on the splines from wear. The local dealer has only done a few trannys and they failed right from the start. I guess we shall see.
