I posted a thread yesterday about my 12 year old Speed Queen Washer AWN412 that I have been having a few issues with. Thanks for all of the feedback and have decided to get the washer and dryer repaired and use a local independent repair shop. I remembered today that the washer also is experiencing some smell from the tub. At its worse it smelled like rotten eggs. I bought some Affresh washing machine tablets and have used a tablet per cycle. I have run 3 cycles now to clean machine. It smells much better but still has a slight smell. Could this be buildup of detergent over the years? I did do cold water washing when I first got machine…then switched over to warm water washing..I have only used hot water washing for the last 6 months. I am having the washing machine serviced and wonder if I should have them pull the inner tub and clean the outer tub or is that a major undertaking that most repair shops don’t perform. I am wondering if I continue with using Affresh to clean the tub on a monthly basis if that will completely clean the tub over time.

On a side note, I did research on new Speed Queen washers and was going to consider getting a TR7…but decided to review other choices based on comments from others…the TC5 classic clean (which is like my old model)….the TR5 Perfect Wash uses new perfect wash system…the TR3 Perfect Wash basic model and the TR7 Perfect Wash top of the line model still use perfect wash system. My question is of all of the models is the TC5 without the lid lock feature the closest thing to my existing AWN412? The other models don’t have the aggressive wash action of my current washer.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you[this post was last edited: 12/27/2024-00:57]

Speed Queen top load washers

Hi Bob, the only top load Speed Queen currently available that has the wash system like yours without a lid lock is the TC five series machines.

I think you'll be able to get these repaired pretty easily.

As far as dealing with mineral buildup and as possible Bad smell it's difficult to remove the wash basket, but it's not too difficult to remove the front of the machine raise the top and snap the plastic tub cover off the outer tub most of the mineral buildup and dirt buildup that you get in a washing machine is near the top of the tub and under the plastic tub cover.

We see a lot of top load washers that get a mineral and dirt buildup note there is no such thing as detergent buildup. Detergent will simply dissolve and rinse away. This type of buildup comes from using too little detergent, inferior detergent, sometimes cooler or too cold to worse temperatures contribute to this as well. You should be doing at least a hot wash every laundry week using chlorine bleach will go a long ways to reducing any odor you would ever get from a washer and generally using a lot more detergent will also solve the problem.

Let us know how the repairs work out, John

This is why I use only white bath towels and wear alot of white clothes, so I can use hot water and bleach to help prevent any smells inside the washer. Regardless of what, I think these should still be serviced and deep cleaned every 5-10 years.

Key to an oder free no build up washer would be two fold-

1) warm water with intermittent hot washes

2) Lots of good quality detergent.

Don't be afraid to overdose on detergent, suds cakes are a good thing in my experience. Use Tide, Tide professional or Persil.
