Speed Queen Washer Burning Odor

I set up a friend last year with a used 2006 Speed Queen TL washer. She mentioned today the washer had a rubbery burning odor and was making rumbling sound. The odor could be the belt, which is probably original, rumbling doesn't sound good however. This machine gets heavy use.

I'm going to check it out tomorrow, anything in particular to look for?

Could simply be a chunk of the belt missing causing the noise. Although, I wonder if it might need a brake kit. Don't know why the brake worn would cause the smell.

I was told the washer works normally otherwise, outside of the smell and slight noise.

Okay, I finally got down to check out my friends SQ washer. The belt was indeed very worn, glazed and cracked.
But the machine is working okay, albeit running smaller loads to be on the safe side.

I was planning to install an idler pulley kit while I'm in there.

Is this the correct part for a 2006 Model AWN-432?

Idler Pulleys For SQ TL Washers

Should only be necessary if it has a problem, most SQ TL washers will never need an IP in their lifetime, however a tiny drop of light oil on either end of the IP shaft never hurts while you are replacing the belt.

Well, strangely the kit which supposedly includes the belt, pulley, lever and hardware cost $18+, yet the drive belt purchased alone is $22+.

I ordered the kit, we'll see what shows up.

We buy the ORM belts for about $8, it does look like the complete kit is a good buy, however changing perfectly good parts never made any machine work better or last longer and the more disassembling and replacement of parts you do to something increases the chance you will cause a problem now or in the future.

Thrashing good parts is wasteful, but if you want everything new for the sake of it why even change the belt just buy a new washer, LOL.

I think just the idler pulley is like 19. At my parts company.

Actually, I ended up ordering the kit from Appliance Parts Pros, it was about $5 more but arrived the next day, still a good deal as the belt alone is $18: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/speedqueen-kit-idler-lever-959p3-ap4489045.html

The PWS customer service wanted me to order from their website which was acting up and the part was shipping from California, so I passed.

Anyway, the kit was genuine Speed Queen/Alliance parts, the belt was Goodyear brand but made in Mexico.

I did the install today, the old belt was really burned in one area and cracked/glazed overall. The job wasn't bad, it took about an hour from start to finish and the included instructions were very clear with a detailed exploded diagram.

The washer was humming away nicely when I left so I think that did the trick.

Could have been the original drive belt for all I know, the washer is a 2006 ASW-52NW.
