I absolutely love our AWS76NW. It's the best performing, fastest washer I've ever owned.
I highly recommend shopping around for the best price. We spent several weeks researching it (mostly online), but then we stumbled on a local appliance store who had it for $120 less than the lowest online price we cound find ($570 vs. $690). We saved another $100 in shipping charges by picking it up at the store.

GE Filter Flow Washer:
What has happened to your GE Filter-Flow Wasgher? Not to sound thinking wrongfully, but if you really liked your GE Washer and it wouldn't cost too much to Repair, to get it operating again, why don't you get the Parts and do the Repair yourself, or have someone do the Repair, after you get the Parts.
I'm not really knowledgable about just how much the new Speed Queen Washers are selling for, but these Days, I would think that you should look into a Front-Load Washer, like maybe a Frigidaire instead of another Top-Load. Not to be counterdicting what I've written above about Repairing your GE Washer, but as an alternate Plan.
Let us know what you decide and end up doing.

I will address both at once-The SQ dryer is the best I have ever used-big drum,very quick.Their TL washer is,in my eyes,the only logical choice.JeffG is right-they can be bought relatively reasonably from a mom and pop store if you do your homework.

I think that the tub brake has failed. You can rotate the tub counter clockwise during agitation, and it makes kind of a thunking noise that is related to RPM during spin. My father has condemned it, so I think is likely we are going to get a new one. It is from about 1990, if that makes a difference. There is nothing wrong with the dryer, but my mom wants a matching set.

Are you not considering the horizontal axis(front loading)washer? If you are,there is more of a selection in features,capacity,style,quality and price than in top loading,agitator type washers.SPEED QUEEN makes a few models that are not only nice looking but have the best waranty coverage in the industry.FRIGIDAIRE followes close behind with quite a record in features and dependability.Their (FRIGIDAIRE)models vary in price but some have a pretty good list of features including a larger capacity than the SPEED QUEENS.The L.G.s(one of which I own)are great as far as huge capacity,great performance,variable style availability(they make a few models that have a control panel on the rear of the machine instead of the front),high spin speed,direct drive,fuzzy logic,tilted tub and ultra quiet operation.The only down side to L.G is service and parts availability.The new GE models are awsome and the price is not that bad.I saw their new washer at Sears(The Great Indoors store)for $1199/washer and $1099/electric dryer both in red with FREE drawers!I almost bought them but I have this quirk about me,I prefer a clockwise spin and was dissapointed to see they spin counterclockwise.Sorry folks,in the northern hemosphere,I prefer a clockwise spin.It comes from my childhood.My favorite classic machines FRIGIDAIRE,NORGE,WHIRLPOOL/KENMORE,front loading WESTINGHOUSE,BENDIX,newer SPEED QUEEN,KELVINATOR,ASKO,MIELE and BOSCH all spin clockwise.It has to do with the magnetic poles and the spin velocity/water extraction aquired by the energy provided.My unit will spin either way depending on the ballance of the load.That has to do with the direct drive motor.It usualy goes clockwise but a few huge loads went counterclockwise.I thought I was tripping but after seeing it happen more than once,I called LG and spoke to a service tech.He told me that was normal especialy with a large load like bedspreads and beach towels.The LG's come with a 7 year waranty(parts only 2nd through 7th year)on the direct drive motor.
The Whirlpool/Maytag/Kenmore front loaders are O.K but have no perferations(holes) in their tumble arms. they(the perferated arms) take lots of wash and rinse water up and spray it on your clothes as they move them up and over (flush,lift,turn,tumble 50 to 60 times a minute).That utilizes the wash and rinse water more and gets your clothes more thoroughly washed and rinsed.In closing,the front loaders are also soothing to the mind and soul to watch!

I've got an AWS45 model, and the parents just replaced a direct drive Kenmore with an AWS44. I have been VERY impressed with the machines, and would only consider a SQ if I was buying a new toploader.
We have decided not to repair the Filter-Flo washer. Cause of death: transmission failure. So, it is up for grabs. Email me at [email protected] if you are interested. We have the owners manual, repair manual, mini basket, filter flo pan, and fabric softener dispenser for it. I will try to post pictures soon.
