Help Support :

The model/serial tag. She says it's around 31-32 years young. Any ideas on date of production? I've forgotton how to tell dates on these... Seems to me that the Hotpoint branded big boys are a little more uncommon than their G.E. siblings... Anyway, enjoy!

"Seems to me that the Hotpoint branded big boys are a little more uncommon than their G.E. siblings"

Hotpoint has been a division of GE since the 50s, but the washer was built differently for a period of time. The dryer was styled differently on the outside, but seems to be all GE on the inside. By the 70s, they were both mechanically GE, with Hotpoint exteriors. For instance, the washer had a different lint filter. By the end of that decade, they became totally GE.

This particular dryer is one of the last "real" Hotpoints, before they became identical to GE. It has a different shaped door than the pure GE, with a circle opening (as opposed to the semi-circle opening of the GE).

The last "real" Hotpoint washer had a ring-type lint filter (self-cleaning) mounted to the top of the wash basket, whereas the GE had its famous agitator-mounted lint filter. The Hotpoint also had its distinctive "2 in 1" agitator, with the main agitator covering a smaller "hand wash" agitator.

McCleary (by Easy) went through a similar transformation, beginning in the late 60s or early 70s. The dryer was GE under the skin, while the washer was its own style. In the 80s, McCleary became identical to GE.

Hotpoint has been an affiliate of GE since it, the Hughes Range Company and the heating device division of GE merged together in 1922. Also this dryer is pure GE becasue my mom had a GE Jumbo Dryer at our lake house that had the same door opening and drum as this one....PAT COFFEY

Didn't the huge capacity models (as shown above in yellow)...both by Hotpoint & G.E.... have airflow deficiency issues?

Now I remember those jumbo GEs. I understood that the airflow was weaker, because the drum was much larger, but fitted with the same blower from the standard sized models.

LZ date code

I believe the LZ date code would mean that this dryer was made in June of 1976. Inside and even the ID tag on this dryer look identical to my '75 GE dryer.

Actually thought I had read on here sometime, that these oversize dryers - both Hotpoint and GE - were made at the Hotpoint plant on Taylor St. in Chicago, not at Louisville Appliance Park. The knobs on RCD's Hotpoint are like the ones on a friends early 70's range. I never cared for that type knob, as they're not easy to grip. Much preferred GE style knobs. My Sister's ex mother-in-law, had one of those dryers under the GE label, and it was anything but quiet.

Looks to be the same style door

Not quie Gary. The Hotpoint dryer door abo ve is much much larger. Only very low-rise laundry baskets will allow you to open the door with the basket in front. The GE above, a more typical laundry basket can still be placed in front and the door still be opened. But, that GE dryer above is kinda what the "replacement" for those huge door/drum dryers became.

I can attest to the noise. Even the buzzer on that dryer is loud; it stays on continuously for several minutes until someone runs down to the basement and shuts it off. You can hear it two floors above.
