My BritStash arrived Friday! UK Ariel has a nice lemony scent; Persil has a milder scent. It does not smell herbal (rosemary), as does German (Henkel) Persil.

Doing an admirable job (except for coffee & Worcestershire) but coming in 2nd place: Ariel

Persil tackled all stains well save for coffee and a slight hint of mustard.
Our winner: Unilever Persil!
Interestingly, Henkel Persil came in 2nd only to the mighty SA8, which still remains our champ.

Another benefit of Unilever Persil: It rinses out well---even a little better than SA8, which is its closest competitor in that department (in very soft water).
As in past tests: Frigidaire front-loader; 18-minute wash using Whites cycle and 140-degree water.

Great news! Just what I have said all along, good to see nice unbiased testing, Persil is truely the best at cleaning and rinseing although lately I have been using Ariel on odd occasions this just proves why Persil is no.1 in the UK.

Eugene - what I'm interested to know is how did the UK formulation relate to the Henkel formulation?
You've got similar results to what I've found, and I've found Persil bio for me seems to have the edge on the biological detergents. Though the reverse is true for colour care products - Ariel colour has always performed better than Persil colour for me.
Perhaps on your next order you could test these?

Must be something in the water I have always found Ariel superior for stain removal consistantly for almost 30 years. Interesting test though!

When I say edge, I mean a very fine edge. The latest formula of Ariel doesn't seem to remove blood that well for my liking, which the previous formulation (with the old logo) never had trouble with. There really isn't that much of a difference between them, otherwise.

Thanks for checking this out, UK contingent!
A couple of things to remember:
1) These tests are conducted using a traditional American non water-heating frontloader. Your bio detergents may be formulated for profile washes, which allow a detergent to remove certain stains in warm water, then heating to a high temp to remove stains that respond better to very hot water.
2) Most UK washers have a much longer cycle than my machine. Total cycle time for me is 55 minutes (including an 11-minute final spin). Seems to me most of your machines have longer wash cycles (18-minutes is the longest wash on the Frigidaire).
3) I have mechanically-softened water. It is slippery even without adding detergent.
4) This is a very difficult test. I stained the towels heavily, then hung them to dry overnight.
I think both detergents are top-shelf; In my test, Persil took the checkered flag. Its rinsing ability is impressive, too.

My mother also swears by Ariel powder, though she and my father use Daz because they detest the current perfume. My sister switched back to Ariel because it cleaned better than Daz. I use Ariel tablets and think they now clean okay (they didn't when they came out at first).
I'm tempted to try Persil, but "WHICH?" says Ariel has the edge - just! Closely followed by Persil.

None of the stains in my test are pure grease, although there is fat in the barbecue sauce and the chocolate sauce; Ariel may, indeed, work better on petroleum-based grease stains. The stains in my test are the ones I've found difficult to remove from loads of kitchen towels, etc.
They both appear to be excellent detergents, to the degree that some have found Persil has the edge, others Ariel.

Unilever Persil has an extra enzyme that Ariel doesn't have - Lipase.
It should cut through greasy stains better than Ariel.
Personally, I find Persil absolutely excellent.
I can't stand the smell of Ariel, the pine scent is just overpowering.

just to clarify, was dealing with a problem on my coffee break whilst trying to post. They all were the same - million or billions not varying between the 2 on them all. Lenor didnt come into the top 5 sellers, and Bold IIRC Was between Daz and Ariel. However Persil was indeed the UKs No.1 seller overall.

Eugene, I just sent you an e-mail, so disregard the part about whether or not you'd had the chance to run your stain test. Great job as usual! So how much better did #3 Tide with Bleach do than #4 Persil and #5 Ariel? Were the differences negligible?
My machine has a heater and I think it does a profile wash on the Sanitary program, so it will be interesting to see if the extra bit of remaining coffee and mustard will shift during a longer wash time in hotter water. I'll see if I can give it a try this week with the Unilever Persil.

Problem with the methodology
While this is a great test and well done for coming up with it you are using the European products and Tide HE in a machine they're not designed to be used with at all.
The European products are supposed to be used in *much* higher concentrations in a front-loader. I would suspect they'd perform drastically better in their native environments.
I'm amazed that they managed to perform so well used in such a dilute solution in a toploader.
S8A and Tide with Bleach etc are designed for this kind of set up.
I'd like to see the test results with the same stains and fabric tried with each powder / liquid used in their appropriate machines.
E.g. wash that at 40C in a front loader (on short wash) with Ariel, Persil (DE) and Persil (UK/IRL) and Tide HE (US)
Vs. washing in a toploader with SA8 and Tide With Bleach.

David, whilst I have never had bedlinen as heavily soiled as you describe, a member of my family has trouble with bowel control and produces similar, stains I would say when it comes to underwear. I have to say that we've used Persil and Ariel for the past few years and both products haven't left stains or odours at all... have never had a problem with Persil leaving stains or odours behind myself.
I agree with the sales figures though, sorry Rob, but even though this is from a checkout boy's perspective I scan probably 3 packs of Ariel (whether it's powder, tablets, liquitabs) to 1 pack of Persil. Ariel is always being replenished more too from what I've noticed and always runs down faster so Persil doesn't outsell Ariel at all at least round here.

just because your workplace sells more of a certain product does not mean it affects overall national sales figures. It certainly does vary region to region but the fact remains in figures NATIONALLY and when the report came out this March Persil outsole Ariel. I cant lie about published figures from a countrywide perspective. We sell more Persil as a store but then Tesco also gets plenty in with special promotions, which may affect it, but I notice whenever Mum uses Ariel its always from Sainsburys so no doubt you have it on offer occasionally. Like I say those sales figures are right.

The products are all Marketed to get the same results as the next brand whether HE OR NOT.
