Standpipe height question

Hi guys,

I'm shopping for a new TL washer and I've narrowed the choice down to a Bravos agi (MTW6300TQ) or the TOL non-Cabrio Whirlpool (WTW5900T). I've read the installation instructions for each and they both spec a minimum standpipe height of 39 inches. Problem is, my standpipe height is 34 inches. Is the minimum *really* 39 inches? Will I run into LF errors if I try to use the Bravos with my 34" standpipe? Any ideas for a workaound?

FYI in case you're interested... the new washer will be replacing a TOL GE Filter-Flo that I purchased new in 1983.

Don't know the answer to the height requirement, but what if you drained the washer into a laundry tub? I don't know of any tub that is 39" tall.

Do you have the option of extending the standpipe if it really is too low? Is it built into a wall or just mounted on the wall? You can easily extend PVC with a coupler and a short piece of pipe available at Home Depot or Lowes. If it's built in that's a whole 'nother story...

My washer drains into a laundry tub dropped into a kitchen cabinet. In the back of the tub is a drain mounted near the top that serves as a drain. It's height is about 2" below the top of the washer, std. counter height. The fitting is a pretty rare one, it's set up for a Suds-Saver machine with two outlets, or more properly an outlet and an inlet.

The standpipe is built into the wall so I pretty much have to live with it.

Good tip on the laundry tub. I could go that route. I checked the installation instructions to see what they had to say. Check this out:

Uh-huh, right, a laundry tub is going to have a lip that's 39" above the floor...

Something is amiss here. I gotta believe the 39" is either a typo that's propagated itself into all of the install docs or it isn't really a hard requirement.

Height.

Standard counter-top height is 36 inches. 36 inches or close to it ought to be fine. I know that on old Maytags, it just has to be higher than the level of water in the tub. 96 inches is 8 feet higher than the bottom of the washer. Will the drain hose even reach that far?

In which country was this instruction book written?

I have a standard height standpipe that my Calypso drains into, and it was necessary to raise it a few inches because every so often, when the Calypso would start to drain, the water would overflow the standpipe. May be the initial pressure of the water pump into a 1.5 inch diameter pipe, but I raised it about 12 inches or so and installed a 1.5 to 2" adapter collar and extended the pipe with a piece of 2" diameter PVC. No more overflows. The original standpipe was about 35" from the floor. Maybe that's the reason they're specifying the higher pipe? The laundry tub at any height shouldn't give you any problem. It has plenty of drainage space.

Thanks for the info Andrew. I finally had a chance to measure my standpipe. Looks like it's 2 inches. I think I'm gonna take my chances and go with either the 5900 or the 6300. I can't see going with something else just because of the standpipe.
