Is anyone else going through a tough time finding a suitable replacement for the Java Chip Ice Cream? I am considering attempting to make my own.

Anyone?

The Finest Coffee Ice Cream

to be found in a grocery store.

I found a recipe to try this weekend. I'll post thoughts afterwards.

On a side note, anyone ever tried this recipe? Looks easy.

My favorite coffee ice cream is Publix cappuccino fudge blitz. You'll never believe it's a store brand.

Publix

Makes some pretty good ice cream. Not impressed with their Barnies' coffee flavored offering, though.

Hey Malcolm

You may want to try Graeter's "Mocha Chocolate Chip". They are a local Cincinnati company, and will ship. Around here they also sell it at Kroger, but don't know if Kroger stores down there would carry it.

Rosemary Clooney used to have the "Raspberry Chocolate Chip" shipped to her California home.

Update: used the store locator and found that both Kroger and Publix in the Atlanta metro area sell Graeter's ice cream.

Wow there Missy, I HAD to have a self chilling Ice Cream maker. Bought a Wolf Gang Puck version. It works perfectly. HOWEVER I think it's been used maybe six times. It's fun, it's in, but you just won't use it. Saying that made me think of Kiwi Sorbet. Maybe you will use it. I'm so confused...

I liked that Java Chip by Haagen Daaz and occasionally enjoy Edy's Espresso Chip ice cream.

Malcom - we have a Krups ice cream maker, but the recipe that Nigellissima's offers is so easy - we're going to try it out, thanks for posting!

here's a recipe that isn't easy for Espresso chip and I haven't yet tried it...but there it is. :-)

M-m-m-m-m, that recipe sounds delicious, Phil. And it isn't complicated at all, you just have to keep whisking the custard so it doesn't overheat and 'break'.

Use an instant-read thermometer and heat the custard to 170 degrees. Exceed 175 degrees and it will probably break.

I'll have to get an instant read thermometer - we have a candy thermometer - maybe that's ok.
We could weigh a ton, making ice cream. Thanks for the hints, Eugene.

Coffee Ice Cream

This is the recipe that I plan to try. (I have the Cuisinart maker pictured above + a traditional for crowds)

This Is....

....What I hate about today's food manufacturers.

They come out with something you like, even love, and the minute profits don't please their shareholders, they slash and burn.

I cannot tell you how many tastes of my childhood and young adulthood are gone forever, and some of them were products that had been around for a century or more. Today's shareholders, CEOs and product developers won't leave well enough alone - there always has to be "tweaking" to products and to the product lineup.

The greatest contempt for consumers has to be today's "limited edition" foods and flavors - items that are introduced and then deliberately withdrawn. About five years ago, PepsiCo did this with Mountain Dew Distortion, a variation of Dew with a heavy lime kick to it. It was better than sex, everyone loved it. Any corporation run by sane people would have kept it in the product line. Gone, and Pepsi will not respond to the numerous consumer entreaties and petitions begging them to re-introduce it. What the Hell kind of "marketing strategy" is that? So far as I've ever known, profits lie in giving people what they want, not keeping it away from them!

Food is much more than ingredients, manufacturing processes, distribution and profits. It's comfort. It's friendship. It's memories. It's love.

New Thread?

Someone should open a new thread where we can discuss foods that we loved that were discontinued by the manufacturer.

Sandy - I'm glad I'm not the only one who has these thoughts. So true.

Malcom-what I like about that recipe you posted is...you can add whatever kind of beans and get a different tasting coffee ice cream - definitely a plus.
