I knew some people who had a similar model.  The bottom freezer on those is really small, and really low.

 

They were on a first name basis with the local SZ repair guy.

My own subzero hunt has not been to have one for a primary fridge. Got a good one in the kitchen already. So the small freezer doesn't bug me. The one Phil has posted here today is circa 20 cu.ft (total) I just want one for a backup/occasional use and because of the cabinet depth (or lack of!). Needs to be as shallow as possible . Subs of this vintage are appealing to me because out here...they're plentiful and CHEAP. I do not mind having to work on one at all. And due to recent big-time damage to the one I bought Monday, am looking for another again. $75 for the one Phil posted here is not extreme to me at all.
BTW...alot of people mention "ENERGY EFFICIENCY"....under the door panels of my now demolished one is the original Energy Guide sticker rated at $140/year for 1987. I think my '97 JennAir is circa $90-95.

Yeah, without the mechanicals underneath, the SZ bottom freezers are exceptionally low.

 

It's interesting that counter-depth is nothing new.  My '57 GE Combination is counter depth, has forced draft condenser underneath and shoulder hinges on the doors so the whole thing can be built in, and can be right up against a side wall.

rp-yes good design is nothing new in appliances, just harder to find today in the rush to cheap manufacturing by the major manufacturers.

This is a beautiful unit!
What is the issue with SubZero? Why could they never get their act together as far as developing a dependable system?
I mean a Fridge / Freezer. How hard is it in the last 40 years when all of the other manufactures were building dependable machines for years?
I have never heard anyone talk about what actually is the weak point of SubZero, although it seems to turn out to always be a headache.
