Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

1956 EASY WASHER

First of all Jon thanks for a great time, Smitty and I hated to go back to work today.

The Easy is the one that was on Craigs List in RI last week. Jon and others went and picked it up Thursday morning as others slept in. The Easy is a Beam design so it is similar in its mechanical workings to early Hotpoint and Speed Queen washers. yet nothing is actually interchangeable. The washer was is excellent condition overall and had sat a long unused. Between Jon, Robert and I we soon freed up a stuck water pump and had the machine working and found the reason it was probably taken out of use. As the washer filled water was leaking from the wash tub to the outer tub and being pumped down he drain. The sediment ejector tube had broken off the at the base of the wash tub. That I temporally sealed with silicone stretch tape and the machine was off and running. The only other snag was a squeakily agitator shaft bearing that we all decided needed oil so the machine was layed on the front and a small 1/2" clip ring was removed to release the A shaft. When Robert was trying to reinstall the clip it went flying about 15' and landed some where in the grass in the back yard. It was an unusual site to see 5 men on thier hands and nees looking for this small clip. Finally Jon and Robert headed to the hardware store looking for a replacement clip. meanwhile my brother Jeff who had arrived found the clip in a flower bed 20' from the washer and he and I successfully reassembled the washer and the squeak was gone.

I had also seen the Easy listed on CL about two weeks ago and since I knew that I was going to be traveling in that area I considered going and getting it. However I was already scheduled to pick up something much more fun and rare on LI NY that I have been on the lookout for, for than more than 30 years.

As I arrived in Cape Cod late on Wednesday night Smitty and I had an almost never used  1962 Westinghouse built in Microwave oven [ built by Tappan ]. I will take pictures and do a separate thread on it in the near future, but to me at least it is cool beyond belief.

Does it say 'cardfile', for early microwave recipes like the Tappan that was posted in another thread... wow those should be cool

Interesting

to learn that the Easy had a live fill with the motor and pump on, just like the Blackstone. Look at how short the Fine Fabrics cycle is---and a soak to boot! Three cycles on that old pretty girl. Wondering if the agitator is an Easy original or a Beam, etc, imitation. The cap looks like the one we've seen recently from overseas Easies.

What a riot if we had a pic of 5 guys on their knees scouring the grass for washer parts. Too funny!

What a nice thread for a Monday morning, but I don't like seeing handsome Artie all tied up like that (kidding), although he doesn't seem to mind and the ropes are loose. Have you see the Comfy Control harness, John? It's nylon mesh, and works great. I bought one for Athena, and the first time we went for a walk with it, she looked up at me, surprised seeming to ask, "Why is this not pulling on my neck?"

That Westinghouse is so neat!!  I loved looking through the electronic recipe file!!

Looks like a great time! It is such a small world, I noticed the street sign in the background and said hey, that is right up the street. We have our boat in Oyster Pond! We have a little cottage off Ridgevale.

There really is a pic of the Washer Egg Hunt--thanks, Jeff!

That's awesome. What would passersby think? A new religion maybe. Too funny.

Jon, I understand, a dog's seat belt. Amazing. But earlier today, in reflection during my bike ride, I thought your harness may have been the homemade precursor of the Comfy. The theory is that a neck leash triggers a pull reflex in the dog, whereas a chest harness does not. Athena is a 40 pound American Bull-Pit mix, strong as an ox, and she hasn't wrecked it--YET.

I would be happy to send you one for Arty to test; in fact I was going to call John and ask for your address to surprise you with it. I'll do anything to get me closer to being allowed to borrow, beg, steal, trade the glass-fronted lighted Easy just for a winter some time in the future.

The Easy is Beautiful!

This may seem a silly question, but what does the Easy sound like when it's running? Being a Beam design, does it sound similar to Eddy's '53 Hotpoint and '57 Speed Queen? Is it smooth and quiet like Robert's '63 Easy?

dig the liquid cooling system for the transformer of that microwave-complete with
a little circulation pump on one of the fan motors! wonder what was used for the
coolant.
