What a value!

It never fails to slay me how, back in the day, an incredibly well-decked out gas oven like this one was available to retail customers. I would have had one of these and a GE self-clean wall oven to compliment it (and a Thermador electric cooktop next to a Chambers gas). There is nothing like this on the market today even if you have the money.

 

Am I correct in thinking that Gaffers and Sattler was a Western US brand. I don't recall seeing any of their products in homes or in stores when I was a kid; only as prizes on "Let's Make a Deal" with Monty.

Trust me, G&S was never considered a "higher end brand".  More like a value-priced brand that could be dressed up to go to the ball.  G&S was popular here in Texas in the 1970s and 1980s.  Predominantly in 1st time home buyers developments as well as up market segments in those areas.

That's one of the more timeless designs I've seen for a mid-'60s wall unit.  Very handsome.

 

I thought G&S was a high end brand as well.  I remember seeing Cloris Leachman in magazine ads for G&S in the '70s, but by that time their designs didn't stand out from the other brands'.

G&S High End or Mid Range ?

The truth is there were very few well built gas wall ovens even back into the 60s.

 

Gas lost this market very quickly to electric for wall ovens.

 

The only 1/2 way decent ones I have seen are some 60s Caloric models, WP did make a few interesting models and actually had 30" wide models in Gas.

 

I remembered going to a big annual appliance show around 1988 and Caloric had just introduced a 27" double Self-Cleaning Gas wall oven.

The guys promoting it were so proud of this $2000 oven and as I told them they had just come up with the answer that almost no one was asking, LOL.

 

For around $1100 at this time you could get the TOL GE double SCWO and even get a meat thermometer and rotisserie, but most of all the GE worked and was reliable.

 

I only ever saw a few of these Caloric built ovens even though they were sold under the Modern Maid, Whirlpool, Kitchenaid brand names, every one I have seen needed a lot of repairs.

I recall in the 1970s we went to Houston a few times to investigate some model homes that various builders had set up for prospective buyers to view and Gaffers & Sattler was a common brand for dishwasher and gas kitchen appliances.  Also Modern Maid.

With the 60s G and S stuff, but in the 50s they sure made a high dollar gas range, it had more bells and whistles than a Imperial Le Baron!LOL

21,000 BTUs converts to 6154.492 Watts which is twice the wattage of a standard bake element (3,000) Watts if you do not add the 750 Watts of top heat from the broiler operating at 115 volts, reducing the wattage of 3,000 at 240 volts to one quarter of that on 115 volts or 750. Efficiency, what? Granted, the input is only fully open during the preheat or Broil operation if it has a modulating thermostat, but still, with so much of the heat lost out the vent, it is not that efficient.

Gaffers & Sattler was a SoCal-based high end brand. A member of our (Episcopal) parish, now deceased, had a maiden name of Sattler and grew up in Santa Ana, California.She lived on an estate in the hills above Santa Ana.

Not sure if you could buy one in a store or whether they catered mainly to the construction trade. I have seen some lovely G&S gas ranges that just slid in and could have been used as upgrades.

Like many other brands, they had D&M build their dishwashers. I first saw the name when reading Consumer Reports dishwasher ratings. G&S and D&M both developed rust in the sump area during the tests.
