Hey guys,Just wondering if you had any thoughts on using supermarket brand detergents and softeners,I'm using ASDA Bio tablets & ASDA line fresh softener,i've just opened them for a whites & lights wash so i'll be waiting for the end results,
I thought i'd try a supermarket brand to save a little money as the tablets and softener are on offer

Does anyone else use supermarket detergents and softeners or do you stick to the top brands?
 
Been there done that... for a while over the past few months I thought we would save money, and used supermarket branded powder, tabs and softener. Everything seemed OK when we were using them, but I was starting to get annoyed with the Asda powder as it wouldn't flush down the dispenser very well (it just clumped up), so you had to dispense it in the drum - which meant it left white sludgy marks over everything and bleached out some bits of clothes. Because of this, I thought I'd try Ariel again - and voila - BRIGHTER, cleaner clothes - not to mention whiter - and no dispenser issues at all. Simiarly I went back to using Lenor, and it's just as cheap as half a dose of Lenor delivers really good softness and fragrance, whereas a full dose of own brand didn't seem to work so well.

It's a shame - one of those things that seem to work so well when you get used to them, but once you use a branded product afterwards you realise just what a difference branded products make.

well i thought i'd have issues with the ASDA tablets,the instructions said to put them into the drawer,and i've found they dissolve pretty much straight away,maybe it's because my washer has a hot & cold fill

i've been using daz powder for a while and that was clumping in the dispenser drawer

the line fresh softener smells really nice too,my favourite was the tempting nature from Comfort but it looks like it has been discontinued,
 
I often use Formil from LIDL . Marseille soap scent powder for boilwashing, Formil liquid black for all coloureds and Formil marseille liquid for whites.

As i like changes, sometimes i buy coop.it detergents or DEOX branded ones.

All of them work fine, find no difference with Henkel / Procter&Gamble / ReckittBenkiser , just Lidl DW tablets don't work properly

Now i'm using the best dishwasher powder I have ever had - a cheap one named "Crystal"- 2.90 € for the 3 kg plastic box . It's far better than finish tablets ..... because it is the last chlorine based detergent available here :-)) no more discoloured plastics and sparkling stainless steel
 
my auntie uses Aldi's liquid think it's called almat,she said it's ok but not on stubborn stains,
not had chance to use ASDA tabs on heavy stains so i'll have to wait n see!! i may just buy a stain remover just incase of stubborn stains
 
I've used Safeway Select liquid HE fragrance/dye free detergent, and have found it works pretty well on things like bath towels (not very dirty, the main objective in using a liquid is to keep them soft).

Also have a 40lb pail of generic laundry powder that I'll eventually boost with STPP and see how it works... lol...

And I guess Sears Ultra Plus is the ultimate "store brand" and I use a lot of it - many here swear by it. One of those few things that Sears got right.
 
I don't mind store brands for food but as for laundry products I like the name brand except for Sears detergent it is the only store brand that i like. One exception with laundry is liquid bleach I buy premiun store brands because I think that Clorox is being outsorced to other makers.
 
Store Brands

I prefer to use Liquid Detergent as I find powder leaves alot of residue on the clothes as with tablets.

I have recently realised that I cant use bio powders or tablets as i've been getting itchy skin recently, and i think i might have excema,

at the moment I'm using Persil Non Bio Capsules as they are simple,just throw one in (they recommend two) and pour in a cap of comfort pure (love the dove soap smell) and switch on the machine.

I used surf small and mighty and was itching to death as there is too much perfume in it.

May try lidls concentrated liquid detergent, as that got good reviews in magazines.

I know liquid detergent doesn't clean well as powder but i feel it makes clothes feel softer, and is less abrasive, and doesn't wash away colours.

Persil Non Bio small and mighty was the best on test for non bio, followed by Bio small and mighty and ariel excel gel being a winner.
 
Bought some Asda FS on Monday in the Line fresh and Blue varietys.

They smell nice in the bottle and pleasant enough when the washing comes out the machine but I have noticed that once the fabrics are dry there is no scent left behind, even using a double dose. Am quite dissapointed.

As for store brand powders and liquids I have tried them all over the past 12 months and none really do work as well as Ariel,

Surprisingly thouhg they do work better than Daz and Surf which I have found to be horrendous at removing certain stains and both leaves whites dinghy.

Ariel has the powders rinsing well, no residues that I can find and certainly no loss of colours. Finally got down to reducing the amounts I use and the scent left behind is discernable especially if a good decent FS like Comfort or Lenor is used over it.

None of the liquids I have used have cut the mustard on anything, they tend to leave odours behind which require a further wash in powder to remove.

On the whole the supermarkets need to up the game and sort out the quality.
 
I have been wanting to try out some of Australias home brand detergents for a while now. I use Coles Homebrand Spring Breeze softener, which works really well and has just had a formula change.

As for detergents i want to try perhaps one of Coles new High Performance liquid, or maybe Woolworths Ultra, who knows. At the moment i am using Radiant MicroMax HE and it works well on colours but not so well on whites. So might have to try some new ones just for varieties sake :-)

well so far so good,my washing came out smelling clean and fresh,so i'm quite happy,i think i might just buy the stain remover spray just incase of stubborn stains,but overall good value for money for the bio & colour tablets + line fresh softener,i still get a nice whiff when i rub my sleeves on my work fleece after a couple days,

i'll pmost likely end up back on ariel when i fancy a change,i can never stick to anything for a long time!!

But.... if sainsbury's still did the Blue Mist softener i'd still be using it!!! i loved that fragrance
 
I prefer persil to be honest

I prefer Persil, i find the unilever powders rinse better than the p&g ones.

I remember when i was using about a teaspoon of ariel colour in the wash it was very sudsy and that was a full load and it wouldn't rinse out. I was left with a massive head on the water on the final rinse.

Persil For me, Non Biological Small and mighty or Capsules.

As for conditioner I like Comfort Pure, its my fav so far, I like the dove soap fragrance. it does what its supposed to do, makes my clothes soft without an overpowering fragrance, I have sensitive skin so therefore don't want to be doused in heavily sickly fragrances.

I have used store branded powders in the past, and they are good value, have used ASDAs tablets,

Aldis Almat tablets are good too, they have no strong perfume, clean well, freshen well, have oxi stain remover and they are only £2.99 for 24 washes, which is excellent value.

I use supermarket brand / budget detergents as we are on a budget. (although I do currently have a big box of Daz which im working my way through due to the kindness of Paul..Thanks Paul!).

Anyway I have started using Lidls formil concentrated liquid detergent called Small but Tall (pic attached) which im finding works really well and im really pleased with it. It costs £1.71 for a 20 wash bottle. They only do 2 types at present which are Bio and Non Bio. The fragrance is really interesting. When I took a whiff it transported me back years to being in the bath when I was a kid...To me it instantly made me think of 70's / 80's Matey bubble bath.

Sears...

I have tried everything and I always go back to Sears...It is sudsless and rinses out well...I have very sensitive skin and it never bothers me.
 
Formil - Tandil

I use a lot of different branded detergents, but for colored or pastel loads I use Formil active (from Lidl) and Tandil (from Hofer/ Aldi) with very good results. I like them both.

I have tried supermarket own brand stuff, whilst it cleaned ok I found it caused a lot of pilling on fabrics. I am using Asda's sensitive softener as a lot of the new F/S with the "fresh for days" smells don't agree with me. As for detergent it's Ariel tablets as they were on special in sainsburys and for colours and darks I am using Ariel Excel Gel as it was £3.89 in Morrisons for a 28 wash pack, strange as the 18 wash packs were £4.35!

Mark.....using Liquid???!!! Good grief.....I am shocked!Lol.

Liquids!..I know..lol. Well I tend to use supermarket / budget powder for my whites and lights but liquids for my darks as I have such problems with powders rinsing out. I normally set the machine for 3 rinses without spins and then 3 rinses with spins if im using powder on darks. Im not usually a fan of concentrated liquids but saw the lidl stuff and at £1.71 I couldn't say no. Have been impressed with it as it cleans well and it's the only detergent I have found so far that rinses out well and by the second spin there is no suds lock and sometimes even the first spin after the first rinse does not suds lock.

It must be a combination of using an old machine and the very soft water we have that causes so many problems. The old machines don't do gradual spins so more chance of suds being whipped up. Can't tell you the bloody nightmare ive had with suds locks. I have the same problem with the Daz. Like I mentioned for darks I have to do 3 rinses without spins then another 3 with spins just to get proper rinsing and no suds locks.

AAAHHHHH...Im guessing I will always have the sudsing issue until manufacturers stop putting all the foaming agents in.

Its rediculous, how much sudsing is in detergents nowdays,

even with a tiny amount of ariel, its extremely sudsy, and my clothes don't feel well rinsed,

I can use a bio liquid though, although Surf Small and mighty didn't really go well with me, i was itching like mad, but it might be the combination of a polypropelene duvet and allergy to dustmites, as its a synthetic material it traps heat and makes you very hot.
 
Asda UK used to sell a lavender bio tablet - It was good but hard to dissolve . I used to crush them with force.
Co-op bio powder is not bad either.
Its beats Surf !

Daz was one of the P&G powders that didn't suds lock with me! I just might take a trip to Lidl tomorrow and try some of that liquid! Mind you am running out of space under the sink!!

Yes I totally agree with you. I think it's because the general public don't think their items are getting washed properly unless they can actually see suds. The problem is that too many bloody suds are created! I can't remeber having such problems years ago when I used to do all the family's washing when I lived at home. Even back in the 90's when I first moved out of home I don't remember having the kinds of suds problems I get now. May have been though the hard water as I lived in a very hard water area. Never the less it's a constant battle these days to find a detergent that does not suds like crazy.

I remember you saying you didn't have problems with the miele giving you the "too much detergent" notification.

I think it might be that your miele has different spin rythmns as of course with my Hoover it just goes straight up to 500rpm and stays there for 2 minutes no matter how many suds it creates. This then has a knock on effect for the other rinses and spins as it's created loads of suds on the first spin (does that make sense?)

There are websites with dedicated users

which evaluate house brands and retail brands and provide informed opinions about which products work as well, less well and better than the alternatives.

You can find a lot of junk on the internet, but there's also quite a bit of good information out there, too.

Personally, I find Persil works great. But, then, so does Tandil. And Spee. Frankly, given that my FL at 60° takes 2 hours and 23 minutes to wash a normal load of clothing with different agitation, heat rise, etc. to maximise the effect of enzymes and oxygen bleaches...I'd be surprised if hair shampoo didn't do a bang up job on most stuff.

When I'm in the States, I tend to by GreatValue products. They tend to work very well, respectively they are often nutritionally and in taste identical to their heavily marketed twins. I, mean, come on - why pay three times as much for salt???

But then, I have friends who only by "bio" Meeressalz, the other salt being, somehow, um, er, not from seawater?????!

If it works, why pay more for it? Unless you're compensating for something, only idiots pay more for something than they need too.

Formil Non Bio Liquid

Bought some formil non bio liquid today, it indeed does smell like a bubble bath kind of smell. did a wash and it washed well, even though my clothes aren't really that dirty =]

there was hardly any suds in the wash and the rinse was clear after two rinses,

I may try the bio liquid if its okay with my skin.

overall quite impressed, has an aqua blue ocean fragrance
 
Safeway brand...

is made by P&G based on the Tide formula. My good friend who worked there for 25 years told me the only difference is the perfume, which is trademarked.

So, for those looking for Tide and a little tight to afford some one wee, The Safeway brand may 'Tide' you over until you get what you really like. Sorry for the pun, but it just worked without me looking for my Thesaraus.
