Supermatic 1464 - A few queries

Hi all,

I recently moved into a house with a friend. It belongs to his father and was his grandfathers house before he passed away a few years ago year.

The property has a Hotpoint Supermatic 1464 twin tub washer. We managed to get the washer working fairly easily...had to run it through a few times to clean it out but thats about it.

The spinner however seems a little temperamental. With a wet bath towel it sometimes refused to start (you could hear the motor going however). With lighter objects such as teatowls it starts up, however seems to sometimes not get up to speed and throws itself about unbalanced. When it does get up to speed its very loud - no idea if this is supposed to happen or not.

The washer itself seems to run fine. The spinner pumps water out ok, etc...no problems with it at all other than the dodgy spinner. We plan on tipping it over tomorrow to see if theres anything obvious...is it possible to somehow tighten the spinner to prevent it becoming unbalanced as much? We've got a can of belt spray designed to stop the belt slipping so will also give that a go!

Any advice or comments would be useful

1464 Spinner

If you can hear the motor running it means the clutch pulley
hasn't seized, but if its very noisy and wont spin a heavy load
it means the bearings are probably shot, or the spin shaft needs
greasing.

Sounds to me like the spinner belt is slack & needs replacing.

Hi,

Nice score, a machine that dates from circa 1979!

You have a fairly common problem so don't chuck it.
Either your clutch shoes are worn down, belt is slipping, or shaft needs greasing.

Easy to fix.

Post a picture tomorrow and I'm sure you can get more help.

We turned it over this morning and gave it a quick spray of the belt stuff. It does seem to have helped slightly. It seems to sometimes not get up to speed and rattle like crazy. We tried really loading it up and that seemed to get it up to speed easier.

I noticed it doesn't have a retaining mat...is this vital for it to operate correctly?

Still found that if it wasn't heavy enough it would rattle away...but I suppose we can just make sure we load it up. I did also notice a very minor leak when its pumping water...we found a small puddle under the machine after it had been running.

Also, a quick question if I may. This model doesn't have a auto-rise. Am I right in thinking we can give it a spin, then stick the hose in the spinner to manually rinse and let it spin again?

Thanks for your time as usual I'll see about getting a few photos - need to give it a bit of a clean on the outside as its looking fairly grubby!

Hi there.

fingers crossed that a new set of belts will do the trick. Worked wonders with our 9410A, which never got to spin speed when we first acquired it. After two years of storage, a change in circumstances saw the machine come out of hibernation.
A new set of belts attached and the machine works a treat.

Hi,

Replacement belts are available if you ever considered replacing them.

Make sure you don't turn it on when it is on it's side because it will ruin the relay and motor.

Can you describe the rattling you are getting. The cabinets on these machines resonate often. It's nature. I'd also take a look at the clutch shoes, I can tell you how since I own a seperate Hotpoint Spinner which is basically your machine with the wash tub chopped off.

The retaining mat is not absolutely necessary you can get by, by packing a towel over the top of the load.

Yes it is possible to manually rinse in these machines. I wouldn't fill it any higher than half full of water though.

Best to take a look for the leak as pipes are still available as spares or you can easily patch it.

James is spot on about the clutch shoes. I remember my dad taking a metal file to the clutch shoes on our 1st Supermatic as they had worn and did not grip anymore. This stopped the machine spinning at full speed.

If we were to replace the clutch shoes how easy/hard would that be? Any guides out there?

The belts look easy enough to replace. I assume its just a case of ripping out the two old ones and replacing them with new ones.

Am I correct in thinking that the following three links are the parts I will need?

Clutch Shoes

DO NOT rough up the clutch shoes, the smoother the better which achieves more
surface contact with the cluth housing. If it leaks during spin, what colour is the water! Is the counterweight or clutch housing rusty, if so may be leaking
through bellows seal, you'll soon find out when you rinse in it with plenty of water.

Removal of Clutch Assy.

Hi there,

Sorry for the delayed response.

1. Tip machine over gently.
2. Unscrew the bolt and washers anti-clockwise on the bottom of the Spinner Assy.
A "14" socket wrench works well for me.
3. Pull off weight.
4. Remove the small dowel in the shaft with pliers.
5. Pull off Clutch Assy and Housing/Weight.

If shoes are pointed then they are worn and won't work very well.

Replace with new and make note of the way they face.
The pointy end should always be facing anti-clockwise.
Failure to do so will burn out the motor! I LEARNED THE HARD WAY!
I recommend you take a picture of the way your shoes were facing so you remember.

Also give the internals a brush/wipe down to remove any dust etc.

I hope my instructions were clear.

P.S. You can also check for any holes in the seals while the Spinner Assy is removed.
