Ok boys, the question of sweet or unsweet cornbread has been thoroughly hashed out, now, for The House Wine of The South

Boil 1 quart of water, add 3 family size tea bags, steep 10 minutes or so,take out tea bags, add 2 cups sugar stir well add enough water to make a gallon, stir in a small pinch of salt, refrigerate, unsweetened tea is a sin in the south.

sweet tea rocks!

subject says it all...

mind you I can't drink it too often because it is too sweet :)

I have a African-American

coworker/friend that brings her homemade ice tea to our monthly potluck dinners that she calls "Baptist Tea". She says that the secret is to make a simple syrup consists of 2 parts sugar (super fine sugar) and 1 part water along with a leaf or two of mint. She brings this to a boil and lets it cool and then adds it to the brewed tea with a little lemon. Delicious!!

2 cups

Right on Hans! It's two cups of sugar here as well. I use a tea maker that steeps it, sometimes I get nostalgic and add more than two cups. Growing up it used to be 3 cups at Grandma Lippard's house...

A friend suggested to me recently that I try unsweet because I'm trying to trim up a bit, I just responded with "oh hell no!"

When ordering out, I prefer unsweetened tea served with lemon, I then sweeten with 2 packets of Sweet n Low, never sugar or any other sweetner.

At home I brew tea, 1 gal water 8 tea bags. I put in juice of one lemon and one lemon sliced. I use only 1 1/4 cup of sugar at most usually barley a cup.

I find sweet tea is entirely too sugary for my taste

always a pitcher in the frigidaire...

Yes, quite literally here, there is a pitcher in the Frigidaire, I've got to make a new one in the morning.

I find this thread so enjoyable, just as I suspected all of us southerners love our sweet tea, and the folks up north can't stand it. I love the sugary south! I'll never leave NC. It's way to cold up north. Bring on the sweet tea, country style steak, mashed potatoes n' gravy, green beans cooked w/side meat, sweet corn and homemade biscuits... Gives new meaning to Fat and Happy.

Unsweetened tea with lemon...sometimes with a very small amount of sugar. Southern sweet tea is too sweet, makes my teeth hurt.

Cracker Barrel

I love Cracker Barrel's sweet tea, it's a brand called "Royal Cup" from a company based in Alabama. Just the right strength and sweetness. It's my favorite restaurant tea, but I also like Picadilly Cafeteria's and Texas Roadhouse's.

Two cups of sugar to a gallon of tea is actually no more sweet than Kool-Aid, which if memory serves, is made with one cup of sugar to two quarts of water.

Kool-Aid is less sweet than most sodas---at least that's what I remember from an ad.

I usually don't sweeten iced tea that much, but on the rare occasion I eat at the Olive Garden (I get a $25 gift certificate twice a year at work), I drink about 4 glasses of their peach tea. I can't imagine that southern sweet tea is sweeter than that stuff, which tastes like they dumped the syrup from a can of peaches in it.

And joelippard,

don't forget about that slice of vine riped tomato to go with your green beans and corn! And speaking of tea, frankly I rather have a tall glass of ice water if I can't have my sweet tea.

BLECH!

I LOATHE sweetened tea. You bring me sweetened iced tea and not tell me, I'll have my pal Tony from "waste management" come have a talk with you.

I like it strong (but not bitter) and UNsweetened. No lemons. When I brew it, I use regular black tea bags, preferrably Tazo brand, and I add one bag of Earl Grey tea.

I also often mix some Earl Grey with black tea. I have a West Bend 3-qt iced tea maker. Typically 1 large bag black, three small bags Earl Grey. Not sweetened as much, 1/4 cup sugar per quart.

Recently I used 2 bags of black and a couple bags of Stash Ruby Mist. Added another quart of water to make a gallon. RJ asked about it, said it was good.

Goodbye pancreas...

Hello diabetes (and pancreatic cancer).

It certainly does taste good though!
