What is the machine being used?

Even back then, oversudsing was a problem it seems!
 
If you'll notice, there is a bleach dispenser in the right front corner, so it is a deluxe machine with the narrow post agitator and tape across the control panel, two attempts to hide identifying markings.

Yes, oversudsing could be a problem in top load automatics, especially in perforated tub models. A neighbor used Tide in her 1958 LK and burned out the motor in a year so after that it was only ALL that was used in her machine. Maytag was really on to something with the sliding motor mounts that allowed the belt to serve as a clutch. A Maytag would never hurt itself. A neighbor across the street got a TOL Maytag in 58 and used Tide. She did not have a dryer, but in the winter when we would have rain and cold for days on end, she would wash everything and take it to the coin laundry to dry. The combination of the detergent left in the poorly rinsed clothes and the high heat of the dryer (because she wanted to dry them fast and not waste money at 10 cents for 10 minutes) made the clothes yellow in the dryer, reinforcing her dislike of dryers.

All, Dash and other low foaming detergents did their best, but were largely successful with owners of front loading washers who *had* to use such products.

Tide has to be one of the worse offenders for high suds and often poor rinsing.
 
John thinks the chief suds-making device in a Maytag automatic is the pump operating in reverse during agitation. It whips up bubbles that rise into the outer tub and with a high sudsing detergent, it can make lots of suds. Hans is right, if you watch during agitation (WHO would do that?) the suds don't form near the agitator, but come in from the sides of the tub. I know that suds form in the barrel of the agitator with the water being pulled in, but I don't think that they escape from there very readily because they are basically air and air is lighter than water.
