Tattoo You?

Just wondering what the consensus is about tattoos. Frankly, I agree with a friend of mine who wisely says that if it's attractive you don't need to decorate it, and if it isn't, you shouldn't draw attention to it.

That said, I do rather like that vine-y thing that guys get tattooed on their biceps. Saw a picture of a shirtless Nick Lachey (I know, I know) on some magazine with one, and my butter melted all over the floor...

I'm a big fan of tattoos. I have several, the Rexair "flying lion" on my right upper arm, the Air-Way "A" with wings on my left upper arm. I have a barb-wire chain going around my arm, and the Rainbow "R" with blue water drop surrounded in flames on my right calf. Now, if you didn't know very early (1930's) vacuum history and company symbols, they would simply appear to be interesting tattoos that have nothing to do with vacuum cleaners. On my back is the Led Zepplin "Ascending Angel" from the Houses of the Holy album. I had that black-light poster in the 1970's as a teenager and always thought it would make a great tat. That one took almost nine months of once-a-week torture (right on the spinal cord), but it's so beautiful it was worth it. The color white doesn't show up well on a tattoo, so we had to redo the white color five times before it was white instead of pink (from the blood drops mixing with the color).

As someone With tattoos, I find them to be a huge turn-on. People don't normally put them on themselves lightly (without thought) although that does sometimes happen. I find them to be creative, and when done right, living works of art.

On that note however, I would never have an actual tattoo of a vacuum cleaner, even though vintage vacs are my hobby and passion.

I think that it is an individual decision if someone wants to tattoo their bodies.

However, I see these blantant displays of idiocy almost every day now. Don't some of these people THINK before they get these tattoos?

I was once a member of a local vintage VW club. There was a kid in the club that had the VW logo tatooed on his forehead. He thought it was cool, I was wondering what his future employment opportunities will be? Didn't he think? When he goes to get it removed he'll have a VW logo burn on his forehead.

While shopping in Walmart last week, there was this guy who was making out with his girlfreind in the checkout line. He was tattoed from his chin line all the way down to his ankles. (Tank top, shorts & sandals). I felt like asking this girl if she knows what her future will hold if she gets serious with him. Cool man, yeah right.

Back in the day and age when I grew up tattoos were considered low class.

Don't these people realize that this is a fad? What will they do when the fad ends and reverses? Then people will tell them, oh! you're soooo 00's!

My father gave me some good advice on tattoos, he said if you really want one get a temporary one and wear it for three months. If you still want it after that, go ahead and get it.

When I see excessive tatoos on someone, I don't see artwork, I see everthing that is wrong with mankind.

I don't currently have any tats. Been thinking about it, though.

However, mine would be positioned so that it would not be visible while dressed to be in public. No, it isn't going to be "dirty," but I just want to choose who will see it/them.

And yes, I agree with Whirlcool about the choices some people make.

I do have piercings, however, and LOVE them.

Earlobes and nipples.

I had the nipples done in July 2003, to celebrate surviving my heart attack.

I had the earlobes done November 2005, on a dare with a "woman friend."

No additional piercings are planned at this time.

I agree that making a gross display of tattoo art is not very appealing. People who have their necks, hands, and faces tattooed are not for me. When I made the decision to get mine, I knew that they wouldn't be visible to people, unless I wanted them to be (a normal T shirt covers them up). The one on my back, of which I'm most proud, has been seen by only a handful of people in the past 20 years.

I'm a big fan of color tattoos. Mine all have tons of color, and are (to me) works of art. They've worked in my favor when meeting someone new on several occasions.

Comparisons

A women compares all pain on a meter against that of child birth. Everything else pales by comparison.

I can guess what I would rate the pain agaisnt, but I am not sure I should speak so freely here.

Now a few discretely placed tatoos that can be easily hidden for work, formal occasions may be ok. Personally, I think the Fridgidaire "crown" would be quite tasteful.

Like I said, it's personal choice.

You know its a sign of the times when your employer sends out a memo to their employees reminding them that tattoos must be either hidden, or covered with some kind of make up cover stuff while on the job.

i love tattoos. when they're thought of correctly. I personally spent 1-2 months thinkin of my tattoo designs and what it would mean & why i wanted it. i currently have 6 tattoos and wanting to add to the list.

now i dont believe tattoos to be nice when they are in bad places or bad taste designs. but when thought is put into them to quote what Superba said: they can be a living work of art.

thats my view on the situation lol.

I won't lie and say the piercing didn't hurt, but I can and do say that it didn't hurt a lot.

No, my piercer did not use ice or another topical anesthetic. He just used sterile needles, and that was that.

I kept them clean with Q-tips and Bactine, and they healed nicely.

As far as Tattoo's are concerned with me, as long as they are real interesting looking or understood as Human "Art" and a true reason behind them, they are quite interesting to me. I'm not a "Blood and Guts" kind or Guy, so I'm not into that type of Tattooing or even Movies or TV Shows, but I guess whatever fits you way or life, as with anything, we really shouldnt' judge people for who they are, what they are or how they live their life.

My Partner Gary {deceased} had gotten his Left Ear Pierced at one time while he was away out of Town visiting his Mother and some Friends. When he returned home, I naturally noticed his Earring right away and decided to get my Left Ear Pierced as well. We went to a Claire's Piercing at one of our Malls and I freaked out, at the last minute and didn't get it done, because of the way the Gal there was making me feel, throwing the "Cautions" at me, instead of making them sound more like this might or might not happen, but you have to know.

We went to another Mall later on that year and I finally got my 1st Pierced Ear. I felt quite comfortable with the Gal there, I guess especially since she was the Manager. I told her about my experience at Claire's and how comfortable I was with her. By the time she was done I hadn't really known she had Pierced my Ear, because all I knew was that I heard this kind of crackling noise.

I just had my Left Ear Pierced again, at an almost 10-year Anniversary date of my 1st Left Ear Piercing. My 1st Ear Pierce was with a Crystal Rainbow Stone Earring and my 2nd Ear Pierce was with a Gold Hoop. I had found out the Day I went back to the same place "Piecring Pagoda" at one of our Malls, that they did have Piercing Hoops, so I didn't have to buy another Stone Earring, for the inital Pierce and the Hoop to wear after the Pierced Ear area was healed properly.

This one was slightly higher on the Lobe of my Left Ear and it hurt somewhat slightly more than the original one. I made a comment about that and the Gal said that it was probably a more tender area, than where the 1st one was done and I agreed with her.

I had a young student (16 or 17yrs old) who was way ahead of her time and quite philisophical when it came to these matters. She is very "Goth" and has several body "expressions" that I know had to hurt (burn scarification). I did have some great conversations with her and she told me that the pain IS part of the whole process!

Easy for me to say that this makes sense but I don't think that I would be so cavalier if someone was chasing me with a red hot branding iron!!!! YOW!

I remember an uncle who had an eagle tattoo on his chest. He got it in WW2. I saw pictures of him, at the time, and it honestly was a patriotic work of art BUT...when he got much older and saggy...OYE! That proud eagle looked like a dehyderated chicken!! Not such a work of art but he was sill proud of it to the day he died!!! I guess that's all that matters!

My feeling is to live and let live! What's art to one is garish and silly to another.

Misc Thoughts

When I was dating, a friend and me shared a prejudiced, but very real, outlook on women who were so adorned:

"Nothing says NO to me like a tattoo".

20 years ago they were not as popular, and alot more people have them now. However, by and large (and we all know it's dangerous to generalize) when I was in the dating scene the more hard-core women tended to have them. These were the heavier drinking, partying type women, all the way up and including the "biker types".

I don't find it attractive one bit. At its best, it's neither here nor there. Women that get one after another and on and on seem to me to have the same body conscious and wierdness issues as women who constantly have plastic surgery. After a while, you kind of want to say to them "damn, stop being so freaking 'body', would you!"

However, my wife loves to see the growth in tattoos. As she gets commission on the sales of medical lasers to remove the stuff, we have a good laugh on it. Many many people get them in their 20s and want them off in their 40s.

People I don't think also don't realize that when they have a lot of tattoos, especially on parts that don't get covered, they are limiting themselves in their own advancement in many careers. I wouldn't hire a guy with a bunch of tattoos on his hands, neck or lower arms...just for business reasons. Customers might wonder what the deal is with your company if your presenter has a bunch of stuff on their neck and hands. Fair? No. Reality? Yes.

I think it's tragic when a woman with really nice legs has tattoos all over them. And no offense, I really have to wonder what the deal is with women who have it around their genitalia. Yech. Of course, just one guy's opinion here.

Still pondering over whether or not to bite the bullet and get a tattoo done here. Can't say I particularly fear the pain or discomfort, rather it's the possibility that I might end up with something I can't stand the sight of 20 years down the line. Perhaps one day I'll happen to spot a design that just jumps out at me, and then I can give it the serious thought it deserves.

Re: piercings, I had both nipples done a few months ago (yes, it's always the quiet ones who you'd least expect), and while it does hurt this only lasts a fraction of a second. Rather like getting an injection from your doctor, the worst part is the buildup to the event beforehand, and once it's done you wonder why on earth you worried about it.

I find tattoos a complete turn off no matter how small or well hidden. They just look cheesy no matter how well drawn and it's so far opposite from expressing ones individuality to be laughable these days. The last thing I think when someone shows me a tattoo is how kewl they are. A mindless sheep comes to mind. Much the same with piercings.

Practical tattoos?

I considered a small tattoo on my upper chest to cover a scar. Before getting the tattoo I tried a plastic surgeon who faded that old scar so well that it is now invisible. (How boring is that?)
However, can one use tattoos to cleverly enhance areas of the body that perhaps....need it??

I had always sort-of wanted a tattoo... When in Toronto with Joe last summer, I had such a great time and fell madly in love with the city; I decided to get something totally Canadian! I'm so glad I have it! See my pictures below.

Not sure if I'll get any more, though. I may do something vacuum-related... as that's something which is part of my life and I doubt will ever not be. I do like tattoos on others--in moderation. But, that can also depend on the person... some people wear them better than others. Joe has 8 tattoos and wants more!

I also have my left nipple pierced. Got that done about 3 years ago. Wasn't too horribly painful. Like someone said above..it was more the moment it happened than anything. Just took Tylenol to keep the throbbing/sensitivity down for a few days. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

I think that tattoos reflect the person wearing it. Everyone deserves the choice to have one if they choose. After all this IS America and it is about choice. If you like it then that is all that matters.

However, I think (just my two cents) that anyone that wears a tattoo openly is looked down upon in society. I know that if a person was approaching me and showing tattoos, I think right away...trailer trash. As a teacher, I often get parents in with them showing. We have a saying among the staff that if a parent has more than 5 tattoos showing then they are pretty rough. We know that they are not good for the body. They are expensive...some folks don't have important things for their children like FOOD and CLOTHES but are covered in expensive tattoos. Also my dad has the marine corps bulldog on his right bicep...they don't age well people!! (Who wants to see a wrinkled faded bulldog?) And as for a tattoo on a woman...street bait! I would divorce my wife if she got one!

Again it is your choice...it is America. With life so difficult, why make it more so?
