All members of staff were sent a Dvd in the post last week containing various adverts from 1979- present day.

Well as sad as I was thinking about putting it onto Youtube someone had it on within what I can only imagine minutes from it coming in the post.

Great price info and if you pause the first advert at 1 minute you can see Mrs Lewis's Persil Automatic whcih she likes in her Bendix and some Bold and Fairy.

In a seperate staff news letter floating about the staff room it gives the 1979 price of an E10 Box of Persil automatic on offer £2.28 to £1.82 which IIRC the dosing on Persil Automatic makes it the same price per wash as today.

Fresh and Easy

I can't wait until they open the market near us. Tesco is coming to Las Vegas and I think it will be a good fit. I live in an area that has older, smaller size chain stores. Indifferent cashiers, iffy quality of food and not a big selection. I think their new store may make a difference. The new Fresh and Easy will be about 2 miles from me. Hopefully it should open before the end of the year.

Turnaround

It is amazing the transformation that Tesco has gone through over the years. Certainly in the late 1970's and early 1980's, Tesco were the lowest form of life in supermarkets in my part of the country. Now they are the UK's biggest grocer, although not mine. The right ad campaign using the right people and the right prices - sky is the limit!

The Half Penny...

Hey Veg

Up until about 1983 there was a half Penny Coin- the idea was 19 1/2p sounded cheaper than 20p etc.

I think I still have some stashed somewhere- they are no longer legal tender tho lol!

Ironrite, You can imagine the conversations weve had in our staff room, dont think there isnt a member of staff who wouldnt mind a little transfer to a fresh and easy hehe.

Hoovermatic, Its a great transformation. Crewe only got a Tesco 3 years ago when Safeway, my Previous employer collapsed.

Previously we did have a Tesco in the 70s/80s in a small shop that is now Ethel Austins but previous to Tesco it was a Midland Supermarket I believe.

Crewe didnt take to Tesco then, I guess the big Coop we had with the Divvi swayed people more back then, when Asda was built in 1978 that did well and still does.
amazing how more than 20 years and Tesco is back doing a roaring trade.

Better quality than Morrisons and Asda by far although I dont think the meat products beat Waitrose to be honest.

I also believe we are the same quality as Sainsburys if not better for less money.

I understand Tesco are not popular with some people with us seemingly taking over and putting small shops out of business but in a world where customer choice is freely availble I belive customers have made thier choice and chose Tesco because thats where they want to shop. Cant help demand. Much in the way the nation wants cheap washing machines although at least at Tesco quality is not compromised by price.
Can we say the same for Hoover and Hotpoint now?

Also to clarify that Tesco employees recieve a better hourly rate than any other supermarket except Aldi.
Currently the General Assistant base rate is £1 more an hour compared to Sainsburys and look at their prices!

The catch with Aldi is that you have to be able to drive. I chose not to drive bacuse its my bit for the environment and while I dont need to I wont drive. Keeps me in 95*c washes so I dont feel guilty about them.

ALso we are treated really well, such stories of horror one might hear of being treated as slaves are untrue or may only exist in the odd store far between with poor management - however as to why this happens I do not know because area managers dont miss a thing on visits to stores. Our welfare is taken extremely seriously.

I know I can go to my managers with any problem and get back great advice on the back of the company.

I think Tesco is the supermarket we all love to hate... although both their stores are really crap here in Lincoln (the stores aren't well laid out, staff aren't trained that well, and staff are treated like shit), I've been to the Tesco's in other parts of the country and you can't fault them. With supermarkets it's hard to generalise as to which chain is bad, as one bad store with a bad manager in one city can be completely different to another good store with a good manager in another city. Our Asda has always done pretty well here because they've had a great manager for years - mind you never responding to a job application is bad in my books. The only thing I hate about Asda is how it's so clinical and white inside, and the quality of some of their food is questionable, though they have been going downhill for us in the past couple of years as I've mentioned below.

I work for Sainsbury's, and have to say I am biased and I do think we are the best supermarket around in our area - and a lot of customers say this and people have said it on the grapevine for years. The only trouble with Sainsbury's is that people think they are still expensive, however my mum has been shopping at Sainsbury's as her main supermarket for about 2 years now and her bill has always been lower than when we would shop at Tesco or Asda. In fact, we would go to Asda and be shocked that how expensive our shopping was, for a similar amount of products at what is supposed to be Britain's lowest price supermarket. I think the quality of our food in Sainsbury's is better than Asda and some of the Tesco lines I've had - though we don't shop at Tesco that much so it is difficult to compare. One thing I did like about Tesco was their barbecue range last year - I don't know if they do it this year Rob but it was absolutely to die for.

I think with supermarkets, they're all as bad as each other and all chains have good and bad aspects to them - otherwise each chain wouldn't have as much loyal customers. I know as a family we've been loyal to Sainsbury's, because of the quality of the products, the layout of the store, the variety we stock, and the friendliness of the staff - and as far as my mum goes the lack of tannoy radio which she can't stand. Beforehand we used to be loyal to Asda for years, mainly because of price but over the past couple of years the staff have been rude, they never have anything in stock, and purely for the fact being in there you feel like you're in the middle of a cattle market so we hardly even set foot in there anymore, and as I've said before recently Asda for us is becoming more expensive than Sainsbury's.
