Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

i'm not sure what the spin speed is

on a bendix. gonna start lookin for info in the archives on this site and elsewhere on the web! i am confident it will run fine, probably have a few minor leakage problems but that will be very fixable (i hope). who knows, maybe it will be like some of my kitchenaids of that era and not leak a drop!

You'll lover you Bendix. They are work horses. Don't forget it must be bolted to the floor or it will walk. There is no suspension in these machines.

Mine is a 1945 model and it works fine. It washes well and spins at a whopping 300 rpm for the spin. When I put clothes in my SpinX after using the Bendix, I have to empty the jug on the SpinX before it finishes or the jug will run over. But one must remember these Bendixes were replacing wringer machines -- and they were automatic.

Your filter will clean up just fine. Just needs some water and a toothbrush.

My Bendix has the original wiring, and so far no shocks.

Good luck and happy washing!!!

Oh, I forgot. The rinses.

You will notice 3 rinses on the dial. The first rinse runs water into the tub after the wash water has drained. The pump continues to drain while this first rinse is going on. I suppose this is to prevent suds lock.

Then it spins the wash water out.

Rinses 2 and 3 are deep rinses.

Be sure to use low sudsing detergent. I like Sears powder. And use it sparingly. Maybe not quite half a scoop if you're using Sears.

Good luck.

well it runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

took pump cover off, checked a few things, lubed a few things, put it back together and it runs fine!!!

ofcourse there are a few minor issues! it leaked around the lint trap gasket so i made a new one with two peices of rubber. no more leaks.

it leaks around the door seal so i'm off to get some foam insulation to try to fix that.

any ideas???

timer is fine, motor is fine, bearings are fine, no leaks around tub seal, only the door.

talked to larry in parma and he has a few parts for them which didn't surprise me. he has a pump gasket and seal and the lint trap gasket! he's gonna check on a door seal!

so all in all it's running great! no shocks, wiring is a bit brittle but good, timer functions perfectly!

thanks easyspindry for the info! does your's leak anywhere?

here is the pump impeller

pump cover removed. glad to know i can still get a pump cover gasket and seal from larry if i need it.

the drain hose connects to the pump with a 3/4 inch female (garden hose) fitting. the hose was shot, replaced it.

larry said there was a set screw in the middle of the pump impeller to remove it from the motor shaft but it looks to me like the impeller would just unscrew from the shaft.

it doesn't leak so i'm not messin with it. this machine will only be used as a novelty.

you can see the rusty evidence

of a past leakage around the outer tub seal where the clamp is. it didn't leak today and i'm not foolin with it. i will paint the rust with rustoleum rusty metal primer. maybe tighten the clamp a bit.

water level switch float tube is on right.

not too pretty

but this gasket i made of two peices of rubber from home depot works! no leaks now around the lint trap gasket.

larry told me he had one of these gaskets, i will get it.

timer is right on top, under the timer dial and it

works fine, advances thru all cycle points. wiring is old and brittle but no electrical leaks. i'm leavin it as is!

my main problem is the door leak. have to fugure some way to stop that as i do want to occasionally use this machine for the fun of it!

i'm going to water test the inlet valves and fill hoses now.

thanks for lookin. this machine is too much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

looking thru the repair manual

posted on this site i see the spin speed is indeed 330 rpm and wash speed is 59 rpm.

easyspindry, you were pretty much right on!

mine is a model S for "standard" it says in the manual.

i just put a short video of it washing on you tube. go to "bendix washer model S" by soberleaf for anyone interested. nothing fancy but it does show it washing and sloshing away.

gonna post another one of it spinning at that breathtaking 330 rpm soon.

Yes, mine leaks a little . . .

around the door. If you know where I can get a door seal, I'd sure be interested. It's not a bad leak, but I'd like to get is stopped. I have put electrical tape on the door under the rubber seal, and that seemed to help. But it's certainly not a permanent solution.

The rinses are all warm water. I forgot to tell you that.

The water level tube on the back works just like a commode float and is easily adjustable.

Compared to modern machines, the mechanics to this one are simple -- and that's a good thing.

Good luck. I'm going to look for your youtube.

i talked to larry

at modern parts house in cleveland ohio and he might, possibly, just a chance possibly have a couple door seals on hand. i will let you know if he does.

he does have pump seals and pump cover gaskets, and again possibly gaskets for the lint strainer. gona call him back this week.

i have read the service manual that is posted here on this site and it has helped me a lot! yes it is such a simple design, i love that about it!

i also didn't realize the water inlet valves had a thermostat mixer built into them to insure the corect temp for the rinse water! "lukewarm" i think it was called.

and that float on the back that you mentioned even has a small amount of fill water diverted to it thru a small metal tube to keep the float chamber tube clean and free of sludge and debris! they thought of everything!

it's a great little washer!
