Any thoughts on the Duggar family who have 16 or so children?

Watched them on the Discovery or TLC channel (I forget which one) and it just blows my mind to have that many childen.

My mother's cousin and his wife had 14 children. And there wasn't a pair of twins, triplets etc. in the bunch. When they sat down for mealtime, it looked exactly like the TV show "The Waltons". Every one of them at least graduated high school, and several have gone to college as well. They were all raised on a farm which helped provide meat, eggs, vegetables, milk, and so forth.

It's actually not unusual for many of the Orthodox families around here to have twelve or so children.

I have stirred up controversy!

Go to tlc.com, click on "Forums", go to "The Duggars" and on that board I am the devil! I talk about family planning which really gets all the Quiver full people going. I cannot post right away anymore, not even on Mythbusters, probably because of when I quoted Dr. Ruth. Look at the thread about "Update for the Holiday season, Sheltie really lets me have it! Nep, who thinks Margaret Sanger made a remarkable contribution to humanity.

Another informative website about this issue.

I enjoy the PBS program "American Experience" - why they even had a show about Tupperware, could a show about washing machines be far behind? This is a link to a program about "The Pill" - which I am not allowed to post on the TLC website but would I be allowed to have it here? Robert, if you feel the need to delete I guess I understand. Nep

American Experience is one of my favorite shows.

My mother has five sisters and five brothers. There were an additional two children who died as infants.

Why so many? German-Irish Catholics from rural Nebraska. It was just the thing to do on those cold winter nights ;-)

It was great having that many Aunts and Uncles (as well as what seems like a million cousins) but the downside was that my Grandmother died quite young of "heart disease", but I think her body was just worn out. Also, Grandad was an electrician for Nebraska Publilc Power, and was laid up for a while because of an on-the-job injury. If it hadn't been for the IBEW (electrician's union) the family might very well have starved at one point.

I enjoy the American Experience show as well but I'm never sure when it's on here so it's a little bit hit and miss. Now sitting here I guess I could go check out the PBS website, duh. I did see the Tupperware show, it was very interesting. Shows like Little People, Big World, The Duggars etc. I can't abide for a moment. Any reality show for that matter.

Oh, I post on Little People Big World and Mythbusters too, but not lately. I think I got in trouble for mentioning "Scamway" on LPBW.

There were five children in our family, that was more than enough. Oh, and if you read the transcript of "The Pill" they deal with the Catholic issue as well.

Time for everyone

I grew up in a family with 5 kids. My folks were not able to devote a lot of time for each child. But we did a lot of things as a group. With me being the oldest as I got older I had to help start supper, have some laundry (which of course I loved to do) done by the time my mom got home from work.

Once I started driving I was depended on a lot to get brothers and sisters where they needed to be. We grew up in the country and had vegatable gardens and always raised 2 pigs and 1 cow during the summer to help out with the food bill during the winter months. Of course in GA our winter don't last as long as some other areas of the country. But we had a good upbringing.

One thing that bothers me with the Duggars is the children have no social interactions with other pepole other then family. That can be a scary thing once they grow and start to leave home. The new home they buildt is on 20 acres of land so that the kids can build houses and never leave. I'm afraid that when the children leave and get a taste of the world as we know it could be a big culture shock. No telling what it could do to them as an adult. As with everything there pros and cons.

See it run, if you go to The Duggars forum on TLC you will find a lot of people (including me) who agree with you. I don't want this thread to get too controversial so I encourge all who have an opinion to go to "Talk about the Duggars" on TLC.com and state it there rather then here. As I state over there, that is strange that they want their kids to live on the same property. In some parts of the country, such as the Pittsburgh area, that is often not possible. My mother would like to have me nearby but whenever I have applied for other jobs most of them are out of the area - we just cannot seem to get many jobs here. I don't know what the economic situation is in Arkansas but those kids may not have a choice to stay there either if they want to be employed.

David Post some over there....

If you believe in population control, and me and Mitsi seem to be the only ones on the board who do, please say something. It getting kind of lonely for me over there, what with all the Bible thumpers. I've been a bad boy and can't post there. Also, I would like to help Robert out and keep this thread noncontroversial, so everybody go over to The Duggars TLC board. The latest thing I got into trouble for was questioning Jim Bob's "real estate investments". I don't know of a Realtor who makes enough money to have a family of 18. If anyone here knows about such a real estate secret, I would love to know.

Petek, thank you, now I don't feel like such a dork for being a fan of a show that is on public television. Other American Experience shows that could be of interest here are "The Bubble Boy"(how on earth did they keep everything in the bubble sterilized), and "Re-enactors" where they talk about Civil War re-enactors and all of the costumes and props they have. Now, If they could do a show about "Automatic Washers" (like the story of "the Jeep" model that Laudress posted once) I would support PBS for the rest of my life!

Druggers washing machines

We live very close to the Druggers and our local Sears donated 4 FL washer and dryers to them. They were the 3.5 Frigidaire/Kenmore 44082 I believe. Laundry room is long and washers on right side and dryers on the left side of the room. Local news here carries something about once a monthon them. We have seen them shopping a good group of kids. We had six which made for heavy daily washing.

If anyone goes over there....

Just know that I am a "bad boy" and "the Devil" because I talk about the following things that I can't mention anymore (in no particular order and probably not a complete list): Dr. Ruth, Judge Judy, The Monastery, What Not to Wear, Mythbusters, Jerry Springer, Trading Spaces, 60 Minutes, Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, the "Older brother phenomena", PBS, American Experience, The Pill, Dirty Jobs, Consumer Reports, Donald Trump, Michael Jackson, The United Nations, Century 21, or REmax or any reference to family planning.

Of course, maybe I am in trouble for mentioning Speedos on Mythbusters and the Speedo company threatened a Speedylawsuit!
The people over there also like to thump the Bible and being Catholic, I don't know quotes from the Bible, I have to thump a Consumer Reports.

I still can't figure out what Jim Bob does to afford a family of 18, and when I ask get a vague reference to "real estate investments". If we could ever find out, I'm sure that all of us would like to know.

As for Sears giving the The Duggars the appliances, guess who ends up paying for that - the cost is just passed on to consumers like us who have to actually BUY the appliances. But I am not allowed to talk about a company "enabling" this family either.

Oh, oh, PBS is talking about population control again!

Looks like the Duggar family doesn't watch the educational channel much. Now there is a NOVA episode about the effects of overpopulation on the world. I'm sure Jim Bob isn't letting the kids watch that "educational channel".

Just to make them mad and because I believe in population control, I think I will write a check to support public television. TLC won't let me talk about something on that "other network" so I can't post there.
