Got the hoover 450 and conquest today!

The conquest has a new outer bag and brand new brush roll. Its in good condition overall but the hood is badly yellowed. But other than that its great! Still in the truck though.

I did take the 450s base inside and cleaned it up a bit. Not done yet but its starting to look very nice! Just thought I would share some pictures!

Not bad for 1933!

The pics dont do it justice. Its a lot nicer looking in person. Will have odowds vacuum buff those scratches out!

Base.

This is that unique model like the 425 that has this base. its not my favorite design, and I much prefer the looks of the 800s base, but it makes changing belts a million times easier!

The beater bar (A REAL BEATER BAR!) is very mint except there are almost no brushes left.

The wheels are rough but are NOT flattened like many of this style. They are vulcanized rubber or something like that.

Comparing the two, I notice that the hoover 450 has a much more stylish handle bail (and appears to be maybe nickel) than the model 800,

Notice the plug that connects to the base of the handle. On the model 800 it is clearly visible, but on the 450 its hidden from the eyes view

Also the handle release is different. On the 450 its a pedal system. You push down and pull back on the handle and to put it up you push the handle up, and press the button to click it into place.
The 800 has a snap back handle, and no pedal pushing is needed.

Still surprises me that they put a more deluxe handle bail on the lower end model!

Also the motors are completely different in design. Under the hood they look nothing alike!

Congrats on your find!

Hi Brandon,

the 450's handle bail is not more deluxe, it's actually cheaper in quality. The 800's is a heavier, stronger, single piece of die-cast aluminium, whereas the 450's is stamped and nickel-plated metal. Although since it's lasted 77 years, you can see that even Hoover's 'lower quality' was still outstanding!

The Popular Priced models, like the 425, 450, 475 and 300, were engineered to save both weight and production costs. This was a lighter, less expensive alternative for people who couldn't afford Model 800 - so it doesn't include such 'De Luxe' features as the Aromador air freshener, friction-stop handle, and more powerful, 2-speed motor.

WOW! Thanks for the great info! That is quite interesting to know! The machine is considerably lighter in weight than many of my other hoovers it seems.

The height adjustment is even quite a bit different I noticed. Such similar in design, yet so different, the 800 and 450! Really two very unique machines I'd say!

I find it interesting they nickel plated the handle bails. It does seem to come out shinier with less work. As you can see in the pictures its got a good shine too it!

This machine is going to look fantastic when bench polished like my kirby d80! I maaay decide to have the paint redone just for the sake of making it look new.

Dont know what I will do for the bag. Maybe I will use the 700s current bag because its black. The one on the 450 is super nice but doesn't match it too well.

Here is the beast... aka the conquest.

ITS SOOOOOO QUIET! I never knew these ran so smooth and quiet. And what a great cleaner. Its BIG but not unusable.

And just in case you suck in a small child or pet, you can open up the large object clean out port. Quite a nice feature if you ask me! Ever sucked up jewelry in a vacuum by accident? in this vac it will go into this chamber for a quick clean removal!

I love the Conquest, and that 'heavy object cleanout' is a great feature. Makes much more sense than Kirby's 'broken fan-blade trap'!

Yep!

Did they have the conquest in the UK? Id like to see a lil junior next to one of these beasts.

I think I found a new daily driver. Love the sanitaire and feel it gets the dirt deeper, but the conquest doesn't stick to the carpet so much, and is far quieter.

Im going to buy a new hood for this conquest. Its yellowed quite a bit. Maybe Ill paint it and if I dont like it I'll just order a new one.

'broken fan-blade trap'

Is that what the em-tor is more commonly referred to? :-)

I love the Conquest, too.. Such a great machine. A suuuuuper pain in the ass to work on... but a great machine nonetheless. I feel that if Hoover would have put a double-ball bearing motor in a Concept I, it would sound like the Conquest. Quiet and smooth. Not loud, and screaming.

I got a great deal on a Conquest.. but haven't had it out of its box since I moved to NC back in 2007. All of the places I've lived since haven't had big enough spaces for me to vacuum with it.

It sure is a beast!

Not as big as the kirby comvac 2800! My friend says he uses his daily and can vacuum his entire living room in under 2 minutes with it! Which for the size of his living room is quite impressive!

28" is a lot of brush roll! ;)
