Well,
She means well and I do have to say, at least she is getting more flexible. Called me (in the US!) last winter to ask where I'd got the cute mobile hanging from his ceiling. Told her I'd made it on heavy photographic stock from a picture he'd got at the zoo. So she made him something similar for his birthday...and he liked that.
I can understand trying to raise a child without forcing it to be a certain way, it is just - you're either so or so from your very birth. The kid grew up spending lots of time with a gay uncle, gay neighbor and family which really doesn't care either way (the joys of a truly Christian upbringing as opposed to the fundamentalists). And he has been a macho, hetero- in the making from day one.
Last week his mom told me that he'd decided he wants to learn to ride a motorcycle now that he can ride a bicycle (the riding and bike is more falling over and getting up again.) She asked me not to give him ideas. So what did we look up on the computer after dinner? I suggested we google (safe search on strict) mythical Japenese playing card creatures. He catches the one with the motorcycle (I can't even pronounce it, much less write it) and away we go - two clicks on the picture and we now are in Riceburner land.
You gotta take 'em as they are, and be thankful when they have ten fingers, two eyes and something between their ears. When there's a heart in there, too - you've hit the jackpot.
