The Maiden Wash - 56 GE Washer/Dryer Combo

Finally got to play with the GE washer with real clothes!
I cleaned out the drain tube on the air gap and was very happy to find the waterfall was no longer a feature of the drain period of this machine!
Here's the loading and starting of the machine:

And the results....

The stuff I washed seemed to come out nicely - I was expecting more tangling! The clothes were still really quite wet and drippy, though. Is this normal??
I figured the dry part of the cycle would take some time!
For this run, I slung the load into the Inglis for a spin and then hung them out on the line.

WHAT?!?! You'll have to speak up!!

Yeah, the washer is a bit noisy, I admit. Hubby kept asking me "Are you sure it's on?" each time I tested it... Believe it or not, though, it seemed quieter with a load of clothes!
I am sure the steel counter and cabinets of the kitchen centre don't help. I threw in some fiberglass insulation before I installed it; hate to think what it would've been like without!
Gotta plan that wash-in....

How fun - you must have been very proud to see those clothes sloshing around IN THE KITCHEN!

The drippage is normal - little more than 250 rpm for spinning makes for some soggy dry cycles. These GE's were excellent washers but the performance goes South when the wash-water drains out... The dryer is capable of boiling off that extra water though, I think the high-temp during dry can go well over 200F.

(Psssst: The Westinghouse isn't much better ;-)

Nice machine

I love the 50's dials on those! Would like to get a set for my 69 undercounter model.
But your machine tumbles backwards on wash from mine! Unless it is doing a flush drain before wash??
I must ask JL about this.
Paul does your machine have 3 belts or a cast iron transmission under the skirts?

Gansky - Yes, I've heard the Westy may not spin all that dry... Perhaps I should be seriously considering one of those wringer machines I found close to home...
Ben - You'll have that Duomatic sudsing away in no time I'm sure!!
Jon - It's the cast-iron transmission; I don't know if this is true, but apparently it was the really early combos that had the transmission.
