The Tub and Agitator...
Something looks off and it may be me. I thought that the A806s had a white tub, not a gray one. Also, that looks like a large-capacity agitator (which would be correct), but I thought that all the large-capacity tubs were white and that all the regular capacity ones were gray. Also, the lint filter may have been replaced because it is turquoise plastic like the lower-end models, instead of chrome. I could be mistaken, however.
However it has been messed with, it's still a great machine,

i thought so too but in canada they may be different,the filter is probably original too.
My parents' A806, purchased in So. California on July 31, 1978 is still in daily service. I will be giving it a thorough tune-up when I go to visit next week from St. Louis.
It has a white tub and the agitator, lint filter and dispenser cup are all turquoise plastic. I know that they are original. I picked out the machine myself! Incidentally, both the salesman and my mom would have nothing to do with the A906.
It is a series 02, serial number 716162AJ.
It cost $459.19 plus $25.99 sales tax. Using the consumer price index calculator from the attached link, that works out to $1,447.29 in 2007 dollars.
Conversely, something that costs $459.19 in 2007 would have cost only $145.69 in 1978.

So the tub may have been replaced? What is the difference in size between the large and regular capacity tubs? How do I tell which tub I have? This is a series 2 A806 serial #696280YS made in Newton IA. I still love the machine though, no matter which tub it has.

Didn't the salesman say all used appliances sold by the store had a comprehensive rebuild process? If so perhaps they replaced worn parts with new to make a "better" used appliance.
Either way it is a great washing machine, enjoy!
Oh yes, there are some parts on eBay at the moment that am sure fit your machine. One is a dial, then some belts, etc.

didnt Maytag switch to all dark tubs in the 80s? just might be the original tub. that IS a large tub. and didnt Maytag phase out the chrome agi tops by the late 70s?

Older 806's also had a chrome strip on the front of the machine near the top. That was dropped on the final center dial series, so manybe the chrome lint filter was as well. Oh, and the last series also does not have the little orange pilot light above the dial on the non-lighted control units like the earlier series did. These last ones also have a silent timer, rather than the snapping one, like the earlier units.
Nice machine! Only the earlier models had the chrome lint filter, as noted above.
To remove the front, take out the two screws near the bottom, then pull the bottom of the front panel towards you. It will then release at the top.
BTW, I have an avocado 806 I'm going to part out, if you need anything.

an easy way to tell the difference...
A quick and easy way to tell whether your Maytag is regular or large capacity....the regular has three slits (top to bottom) on the agitator and the large has four slits (top to bottom)for the water to pass through the lint filter. At some point in time, the regular capacity became "large" and the large became "extra large", but the capacity did not change for either...just the way it was named.

My mother had an a-407 washer , it was a 1973 washer and indeed it had a white tub, the agitator is exactly like this one, they would say that it was an 18 pond capacity, which at the time was the largest they had. The old one did not have a crome strip or filter, just the plain old plain old.It also had the amber light, i used to put my finger over it, when I was a kid, i thought that it was neat to see the light shine through my finger
The newer machine that my mother currently has was purchased in 1987, a 412, same capacity as the old one, however, i know it has a blue tub, I helped pick it out. Same agitator, although, it does ot filter as good as the old one did, strange, but oh well.-----As far as the trim pieces, this is what i have seen. I once saw a 1968 model similar to my mother's old one, and indeed, it did have the crome trim, amber light, and the crome filter.Correct me if I am wrong. I belive that the higher end models, some years had the back lit contol pannel,the lower end models had either just the solid or the amber light. i think that there is a brochere in the archives someplace, that is the same one that this one came out of, 1978, that one may have been the top of the line model. The top for 1987 stopped at the 712, the dryer my mom has is that model #.btw, nice washer, enjoy it, they are really good machines, my mother has had hers for 20 years now, no complaints.Be good to it, and it will be good to you

for your kind words, advise, and offers of parts. My head's still spinning a bit from having this machine just sort of drop into my lap. I was never that interested in Maytag really, preferring the drama of BD Whirlpools. But now that I own a real Tag it is definitely one of my dream machines.

We had a 1976 Maytag set in Harvest Gold that had the smaller tub but a dark enamel tub, as mentioned above this might have been a Canuck thing. Also had a suds saver. The model was not as deluxe as yours however. My mother got rid of them in 1994 when she wanted white appliances, the Maytags went to a friend's daughter's cottage in perfect working order though the washer was leaking a small amount of oil.
