The new speed queens: how bad are they?

I've seen some discussion about the 2018 Speed Queens. My parents have a few year old speed queen that they swear by, having replaced a 20+ year old Kenmore agitator washer. I have the same mindset, I like good stuff that just keeps on ticking and lasts, versus the cheaper electronic stuff that always seems to have something wrong with it.

I was looking at the 2018 Speed Queens, and some of the discussion seems pretty concerning. They're still known for reliability, but is the 2018 model so bad that you wouldn't consider purchasing? My clothes are never extremely dirty, but I've heard of soap residue still being left on, and the clothes just not being cleaned. I don't want to be stuck with something ineffective for 20+ years.

There are several threads and Youtube postings on this subject.

 

Though Ralph Nader wasn't a fan, many people loved their Corvair.  You will have to make up your own mind.

Any intention on finding out either, my guess is they will last forever and perform very poorly, I don't see that action doing much.

If you are the type that prefers a delicate wash and only does small loads, this washer may work for you. During my tests, the washer did well with smaller, flexible items and was slightly under loaded. It is really well built and will likely last a loooooong time.

If you buy one, ask your dealer about the return policy. You should have at least a week to try it and see if you like it. If you don’t like it they should take it back and switch you to something different. They will likely charge you a delivery fee and perhaps a small restocking fee (the machine isn’t really new at that point).

Check the used market, a lot better deal than the new SQ and better performance can be had from a Whirlpool/Kenmore direct drive washer or a Maytag Dependable Care washer.

Go with a Maytag washer, in 5 years Speed will either change to something better assuming it doesn't leave the resi business.

Nader and the Corvair

The Corvair is more like the original Maytag Neptunes. When used and cared for correctly, they were incredible for their time. The Speed Queen is in another ballpark unfortunately. It looks like some of our members have purchased the machine, so you should be getting feedback from them soon.

I have the older model

that while the water level was low, I was able to spit in the face of the facsist DOE, EPA, and algore wanna bes and raise the water level to my liking to my needs (after all I pay the bills) and I haven't looked back.

 

From what I have seen on the vids, looks like Speed Queen has saddled up with the rest of the snaggers and built a less than stellar machine.

 

I would not buy one.

Everybody knows i put my money where my mouth was, i did a medium sized load of whites, hot water, heavy duty, and auto fill, with tide ultra stain release and two paks of tide bright white (oxy bleach) and my partner cut the grass yesterday and got this pair of socks filthy. This sock has a very small pinhole on the front so that's how i knew which one it was. Anyways it came out pretty clean.

I would not buy one only because the new SQ is so expensive. I would buy the cheap Amana before a SQ, the washing action of the Amana or Roper has to be better.

If my 15 year old Depndable Maytag breaks down and becomes uneconomical to repair, I would likely go with the 2018 SQ. I like the looks of it, it fits in the space(I have cabinets above that limit the lid height to 54 inches), and I like that you can select the water load as well as the shorter cycle times.

It appears to be well built and that sock above is about the dirtiest piece of clothes I wash so based on that result should be fine. The wash action being gentler but still effective is a plus!

A friend has a rental

property and bought the tenant a b.o.l full agitator washer two years ago. no problems, she likes it. No problems yet. I'm not saying the brand.

Two years ago would not be the current model.  They changed wash format this year.   Fixed tub/agitator machine is the one that is being carped about.

I’d probably be interested in the 575 Maytag if it had selectable water levels. Not a fan of having the machine do it which leads to longer cycles.

if you went a quality washer the best is vintage

my 2 cents on this including the speed queen brand if you went a quality washer dryer set these days its best to consider a vintage set best advice I could give is keep the old set and have them repaired sometime a repair cost lest than a new set

I too wish the '575' had selectable water level. The 'water saving' auto fill is such a time waster on modern machines.

If auto fill is imperative,then use an electronic eye (I know,it fogs on hot) or some quicker way of achieving proper level.

My '12 AWN542 has spoiled me with under 35 minute run time. I can wash/dry my work uniforms in the morning if necessary.

Since when did it become tolerable to let a couple loads of wash eat your whole day?

If I outlive my current machines,I think I'll look for 'low mlg' '15-'16 SQ's.
(ones without slow 1st spin).
