Very interesting! I thought Whirlpool/Sears was the only one to offer the open top wringer. I've never seen this version of Norge wringer before.
Much as I like the Maytags, the open top wringers are really nice because it's so much easier to see what's going on and prevent any wringer hanky-panky.

Thanks. I expected it'd be something like that. This is sort of an "added feature" model, a step up from the LDA-5800 by having the pushbutton temp selector instead of a rotary knob, and a MagicClean filter.

I seem to remember that there were only a few manufacturers of wringer mechanisms (and that they were "slipcovered" by each manufacturer...I remember ads for a "Lovell" brand in Better Homes and Gardens...so open top would be logical for RCA Whirlpool/Kenmore and others...

WOW, Mickey ... the powerful wringing action on the Norge is impressive! I love the pump you have on your Maytag J, also!! My "J" is the only Maytag I have without a pump. :-(
I use my Maytag's for doing rugs, also. The wringer heads on all 3 models easily handles big rugs, towels, blankets, etc.
The Commander is a really "sweet" machine; loading is quite easy. It has the capacity as the square Master; 18 gallons.
The "sloshing" action in the Master is minimized because of the attached lid. I can't ever get the lid on fast enough with the Chieftan and Commander; I usually get water all over when washing big items.
Although, with these machines, half of the fun is the water and soap suds every where!! As long as you wipe everything down really well.
I had to do a lot of painting on my Commander. The skirt was so bad ... it hadn't been well cared for. There is a rust through on the lip, where the skirt seal goes (black band), making it "scary" for any future rusting. I used Rustoleum's appliance paint ... it's not as smooth as I want it. The finish on original Maytag's was very, very smooth. The trick always being to wipe, wipe, wipe up the water!!

Hello Wringer Dudes!!!
Kelly, in a recent thread which i can't find, I pixed the agitator sloshing at a very low water level in a tub layered with suds. The Agi is short and squat with four big paddles, giant holes in the planes between, and vertical slots, identical methinks to the really early automatic one. Wish i could find the thread.
Geoff, Merry Christmas, Man, I so envy you your Operators Manuals, and high water levels. Never seen or read them and had no idea you could fill the Tags so high.
You want more splashing fun. After a clear rinse, drain your Buddy with the agitator going. "Oh what fun it is to ride a splasing Tag tonight !!" Would it be possible for you to email me a few of the most interesting pages from the manual.

Mickey ... check your email. Also, did you know that Maytag only recommended using their wringer washers with only full loads of water? Even if you were washing just a few items.
This way, you get the full "gyrafoam" action ... clothes tumbling toward the center of the machine.
Maytag addressed items getting caught in the wringers by telling the homemaker to make sure she started a folded edge through the rollers; it usually works every time for me. And I enhance it even more by standing by the side of the machine when wringing. This way, I can see immediately if the clothes are falling out properly!
Merry Christmas to you, too and a very happy "washing" New Year!! An old wives tale ... "whatever you do on New Year's, you'll do the whole year through!" Fire up those wringers!!

Here's a laugh for you: I have never filled beyond the small hole in the agitator because I thought water would get into the bowels of the machine and ruin it !!!
Also, you're not supposed to fill an Easy beyond the giant screws near the top of the tub, so i just guessed it was the same for the Maytag. Can't wait to max out the fill; it'll be a firsrt. Thank You so much for teaching me.
Yes, Geoff, I"ll always be washing or working the washers. Even yesterday, with all I had to do, the sun finally came out, so I washed 4 sheets-in-waiting, hung them out on the deck, and of course they were still swaying gently when the guests arrived. Yes people, I washed on Christmas Day. Wonder how many other AWORG friends did.
