The Sound of Suds

A lot has been said about the lack of a window in the door of the solid door Maytag Neptune front loader.

How do you know the suds level, without opening the door?

Well, the good news is that with the 7500 series, the wait to open the door is only a few seconds. So after hitting the pause button, it's pretty easy to tell what the suds level is.

What I've noticed over the years is that I can also roughly guage the suds level by how the washer sounds when it's tumbling. A sharp sloshing sound means there are either not enough suds or just the right amount. A hushed, dampened sound most often means there aren't enough suds. I've noted this enough times to be pretty much right when I open the door to confirm the sound, and make adjustments accordingly.

And so, we have the Sound of Suds. "The tubs are alive, with the Sounds of Suds....", or so Julie Andrews might have sung... lol...

Do you mean TOO MANY suds in that statement? It would make sense, even with the windowed Duet, I've notice myself NOT hearing the tumbling, slapping sounds of the clothes in the drum and go to check the suds level. The same is true with the Neptune, through the soap dispenser is a great way to eavesdrop on what's going on inside.

I remember as a kid when the GE Filter-Flo would get real quiet, it usually meant it was oversudsed - sometimes to the point of suds drooling from under the lid and down the front of the machine!

Yes, of course, my dyslexia must have snuck into that sentence.

What I meant to say, was,

"A hushed, dampened sound most often means there is too thick a cushion of suds".

One way to hear the sound of suds.....

Is on an "80's oldies" radio station! In the early 80's Phil Collins had the song "No Reply At All". In between the lines there is a swishy-sudsy sound. I told someone at the time that it sounded like a sudsy washing machine but they all laughed at me. It really does! Anyone hear it?

No, but I remember (and love) "Watching The Clothes Go Round" by the Pretenders, from around the same period.

Would have loved it, even if I hadn't been enamored of Chrissie Hynde.

I just looked all through You Tube and can't find "No Reply At All" he must not have a video for it (they have everything else of his). I hope this is not another figment of my imagination!

Washer music

The song that really sounds like a washer is George Benson's "On Broadway". It's a live song and the constant handclaps could sound like a washer splashing away.

The "beat" of a belt-drive Kenmore is about 130bpm.
