Direct-drives were initially 24" width. 27" (for larger capacity) came later.

that was the introductory first D-2000....way before they gained the name DirectDrive
no dual action available yet for these, the top barrel of the agitator was removable, as it housed the lint filter, and sported the wavy fins of the Surgilator....which worked really well for the deep narrow tub of these machines.....
first versions were a spin drain....
large capacity by their standards.....the 27" came with larger tubs.....
also seems these gained popularity when first introduced, the design took off, as it appeared everyone had one.....24" was nothing new, compared to the same size belt drive, which was only considered a specialty machine....
this was introduced around 1981-2....around 1984 was when the introduction of the 27" came out...Sears was offering BIG discounts to phase out the belt drive machines to make room for the DD...I could have had the Ebony Digital Belt drive set for the price of the new DD washer alone....but I wanted the new design of the LadyK....in platinum!

So DD’s were around in 1981-2? I’m ashamed to admit I was in the appliance closet for years and when I got married in 1986, we bought a new house and immediately marched down to the nearest appliance store and bought a brand-new 1986 Whirlpool washer and dryer (upon my insistence). Being in the closet so long, I was dismayed at what the washer did and sounded like when we got it home. Had no idea the belt-drives were being phased out. At least Whirlpool kept the same dashboard, but misleading nonetheless...
There were still Design 2000 24" DDs in 1984 per the one Granny bought. It was spin-drain but did not have a removable-barrel filter-agitator.
Washerlover, you did not look inside before you bought it? Even the absence of the D-shaped tub opening should have alerted you that there had been changes, to say nothing of the absence of the Super Surgilator agitator.
First DD Washer
This machine may be one of he first DDs, the model and serial # would confirm, someone should get it if it is a 1881-2 model as these are pretty rare.
We have a late 1981 first edition like this in our museum all restored and hooked up ready to run, we replaced the timer in it recently and it was hard to find the timer.
All orignal DDs were 2.5 CF tubs and in 24" wide cabinets, very few had a manual clean lint filter, our museum DD was the first machine that WP built with the basket mounted self-cleaning lint filter.
WP did come out with a service-kit for these early 2.5 CF models that was a light blue dual action agitator to help solve the serious linting problem complaints they were getting on these early SD DD washers, WP was not allowed to sell a washer with a DA agitator at the time because Sears had bought the exclusive right to use this feature for ten years which meant that WP had to wait till about 1986 to start selling machines with the DA agitator, but they were allowed to give them out as a service kit. When they got the ND system to work in 1985 this did more to solve the linting problems anyway that plagued all SD perforated basked washers.
The 27" 3 CF tub models came out in 1985 and by 1986 all DDs were neutral drain, All 3CF models were ND. WP continued to build 24" models all the way to the end of stand alone DD washers, there were also many 2.5 CF tub models built with 27" wide cabinets.
