I took that apart this afternoon, it had quite a bit of string and hair wond around it. I cleaned all that out, and lowered the brush(the bearing ends have a "used" side so I made sure that was up)
It works much better now!
The canister needs the above mentioned handle, and I am thnking new carbons as well. It starts slowly, and takes a couple seconds to get up to speed. From what I can hear its not arc-ing or burnt, just well used.
I'll have a look on ebay for some parts.

Collecting vacs is a very reasonably-priced hobby, unless you're going for really rare stuff. Even then, mind-boggling stuff can turn up at any thrift-store visit; they generally have no clue about what's good and what's just another worn-out machine.

You can buy a late Electrolux (1205, Super J, Olympia, Eldorado, Marquis) and put it into primo shape for about $100, if you're handy. Parts are easy to find on eBay. If you find an Elux in a thrift, turn it on and see if you see or hear any sparking or smell any hot smells. The motor should sound smooth. Turn the machine over and look at the plastic piece on the bottom of the machine, at the front. It's called the caster guard or sled, and it holds the front swivel caster. If it's broken, pass the machine up unless you need it for parts; this is an expensive repair, and replacement sleds are very HTF.

Aside from that, it's kind of hard to go wrong with an Elux. One of the joys of restoring one is that they're extremely grateful for the attention; as you correct problems, you'll find that the power and suction get better with each thing you do. First you clean it out and put a new bag in it, and that helps a lot. Then you replace a leaking hose and that helps even more. Then you put a new brush roll and bearings in the power nozzle and WHAMMO- you've got one hell of a vac.

It's also fun putting together all the attachments, in the correct colour. My 1205 has a complete set of turquoise attachments, and my Diamond Jubilee has the correct beige ones. One of the fantastic things about Elux tools is that their brush bristles are replaceable; if the bristles on your dusting brush are worn out, you can replace the bristles only- you don't have to buy a whole new tool.

Start with one machine for daily use; I recommend a Super J or Eldorado or Olympia for beginners. Put it back into perfect shape, and sooner or later, another orphaned Elux will find you. And then another...

Tog....yep, the one and only! Long story....I'll be commuting hither and fro to help during "transition period" (remember, partner and I will be circling each other three times in the ancient divorce ritual at midnight!!)

As if we hadn't already....(giggle)

He has a lot of support in the area, and actually so do I, so this is a decent and practical place for him to live. If being apart doesn't work out, I'll get a place in either an adjacent building, or my friend's building, which is nearer to the subway...but we're all friends here and I anticipate no problems.

Then again, man plans and God laughs!

In the meantime, I'll see all those movies I've been wanting to see...

1205, The Deluxe

I sold Electrolux from 1972 until 1977. Until 1989, they were a very good vacuum. Then plasticity and bad motors began to plague them and no one from America was available to sell or repair them. My ex wife still has our lat one we bought in 1986. It is in flawless condition. I bought a Hoover after I moved out and while it is deafening, it is an amzing cleaner.

I remember the Farberware electric skillet, but, don't remember the 3 qt. electric pot.

Was an interesting find at Goodwill. Needed a good cleaning, but shines like new now.
