A factor which might make a difference.........

the Juicerator is very quiet, nearly silent.

The Vitamix is not. The new design ones are quieter, but they still sound more like blenders. The Juicerator sounds more like a good processor. (Quiet.)

Sound Levels

Interesting you mentioned that about sound - did you see "The Quiet One" VM 0145 I can't afford one, but the idea looks like a do-it-yourself project. It has me thinking. Blenders are typically loud ,and you're right, Lawrence, the ACME's Juicerator is contrastingly quieter...I usually plug my ears when running my blenders for a while.

I would like to get the VM "Quiet one" but cannot afford it either at this time.Do have two VM Blending Stations which are similar.They are older models.Keep in mind these machines aren't marketed or intended for home use.I bought my two from a commercial supplier years ago.Sometimes machines like these show up on the used equipment markets.When the machines are changed out-they can have many years life left in them for home users.Enjoy mine.Blentec makes similar machines-I have theirs,too.Enjoy them as well.Any will make very good drinks-you can load them and start the machine and do other things while it mixes.Still keep an eye on it-it can jump if the blade hits a frozen item or ice cube.These have better quality than any home blender-they were designed to make dozens of drinks daily.They are good for those who like "Spin cookery" as I do.For those who don't want to spend the money on these the home model VM and Blendtec machines are just fine.

Sweet Potato Soup

You're right about the sound.  I made Sweet Potato Soup in mine last night for dinner.  It has to run for about 6 minutes.  I have an open concept Kitchen/Family room and typically watch the news while I'm fixing dinner.  When this beast is running I have to pause the TV because I would really have to blast it to hear over the VM. 

 

I looked at the prices for the quite one!!  OY!! $1,000.  I didn't pay anywhere near that for my VM but mine is the traditional Home model.  Not the quiet one.

 

Sure makes good soup though and FAST!!

Is it really impossible to make a quiet Vita Mix without resorting to a plastic cover. For example that vintage Braun blender I got awhile back is surprisingly quiet for a blender. I realize it's not near as powerful but I was really surprised when you compare it to any other similar sized blenders. I don't like screaming appliances, it puts me off using them.

Petek - I agree - you make a statement about engineering it quietly at the get-go. I wish there was a cheap noise-cancelling device they could incorporate into the blenders for quiet running....like they do around neighborhoods near gravel pits and noises so loud would otherwise keep people awake all night and day.

Chach - sweet potato soup -sound dee-lish! i love potato soup and a certain other yellow squash soup. Do you make this and freeze it, too?

Backtop related - more orphans rescued - LaBelle Party Perk, a Vollrath steamer missing the other half, and a FLINT 1 qt. pan, Made in USA by Ecko ca. 1950s? The LaBelle isn't in great shape, but I love that 60's styling. I don't know how to clean aluminum to get the interior shiny new looking, as I would prefer...probably doesn't matter...wouldn't consider using aluminum for coffee making (recent studies do not support linkage to alzheimer's; not to start a discussion over that. Thanks.

Cleaning the coffee pot

To clean the coffee pot to like ne inside put in 3 or  4  teaspoons of cream of tartar in the pot fill with water and let run through a cycle.  Let it cool down and then pour out the water and it should be bright and shiny like new.  Same thing with any aluminum pot. 

 

Since this is a part pot maybe even a tablespoon of cream o tartar.

No Phil, never a chef. I use the steam table pans when I make large amounts of food like baked beans for a picnic, or green bean casserole for parties. It's easier to use one large pan than multiple small ones.

My now deceased neighbor Thelma had a whole set of Ecko Flint cookware that was probably a wedding present in '54; still looked new when she passed on a few years ago.

Blenders--the chainsaws of the kitchen!A company called Evergreen Trade sells a retrofit sound hood for standard VM blenders-if you don't like the noise-this may be the answer.Would be less expensive than the hooded blenders from VM and Blendtec.Got mine years ago when they were less expensive.The hoods do help.I ordered my VM hooded blenders from them-they sell home and commercial VM machines.Its a good outfit to deal with.They have a website.

That is a beauty of a sound suppressor hood at about $200. How about that NUTRIFASTER JUICERl ? It'll grind up Redwood Trees..just $2,465.00, which is targeted for the commercial market, but ..would be fun to own.

Glad Evergreen Trade still has the sound covers.Yes,that Nutrafaster Juicer looks nice----But for its price you can buy an awful lot of juices!!I have a Champion Juicer but hardly use it-just too much hassle and need too much fruit or whatever to get the juice.The juice it makes is very good-but just too much to use.Use the VM or Blendtecs instead.They turn the pulp the juicer throws aside into a creamy,smooth drink!Guess hence the name for my Blendtec hooded blender--the SMOOTHER!!

Rex - that's the only way to go - pulp included, smoothed into other liquid. i can understand why you use the Blendtec now - the Champion separates out too much of the pulp. You do end up using bags full of fruit to get juice, then.

Vitamix The Quiet One and Blendtec Smoother - similar prices. Nice unit you have.

PULP - !

There are some Juice purists who think juicing is the only way to go and the Pulp should be preserved and used in other foods like soups, etc.  I suppose that's an option but as I said earlier in one of these posts that takes a lot of organization and forward thinking neither of which are on the top of my hit parade of favorite things to do.

 

Before I had the VM the juicer was great because it was all I had and it was better than nothing at all.  Now that I have the VM I likely wouldn't want to go back to a juicer.

 

However without being too graphic I will say that with my IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome) too much fiber can be an issue.  I really have to watch and for someone who has to limit the amount of fiber the juicer might be a better option.  I've learned to manage my IBS with my diet so it's not a big issue for me. 

 

What I like about the VM is it can be used for many other things.  I have made soups, Low fat alfredo sauce, about a gazillion smoothies, almond milk, etc.

hmm, speaking of fibre - after having a sigmoid-ecotomy a couple years ago, certain fibrous foods can be a problem, but IBS is a different game altogether. Do you freeze any soups? I asked before, sorry.

My Smoother Blender looks much different than the one shown.Mine is about 10 years old.The top cover is different.But otherwise it would be the same.The motors haven't changed much.The "motor" unit lifts out of the base-it can be mounted in a countertop if desired.The sound cover lower part is under the motor top part.Pretty neat system.And Blendtec includes a template to mark your counter if you want to mount the machine in your countertop.You just have to have a 20A outlet under the counter to plug the machine into.I also have a Blendtec Titan blender-this beast uses 20A-need to order some new jars for it.Most powerful blender I have except for my VitaMix XL.That is a REAL beast!!Can mix a gallon and a half at a time-never have to blend that much-but the machine fun nonetheless-only one of that type I will get--EXPENSIVE!!!Right now the Champion just sits on my counter-the person I bought it from ended up not using it after a while.Use it on occasion if I can get fruit cheaply on sale.Just don't like cleaning the thing-NONE of the parts can be put in a dishwasher.

Sandy - I thought I was being weird buying this, but from the get-go, it reminded me of a jet engine standing on its intake side and then a rocket, albeit suggestive in shape. The first time through the thrift I let it go...the next day it was still there and I had to take it. I gained more girth around the right hand knuckles, cleaning it.
You can't see it, because I didn't want to spoil the effect, the other handle is missing - well, most of it is gone.
I would buy another if I could find one - just on the appreciation for design. Thanks for looking...and if I can find another and another, I'll be sure to give you one.

One more - Metrolite Health Ware - Not Sold in Stores

Anyone have one of these? I just couldn't resist - it looked so old...and a built in temp gauge (doubt it works).
I think it's from the early to mid 1940's...as I saw only one other somewhere in a search. Hammered aluminum there, but still needs cleaning.

On the bottom it says, "Not Sold in Stores". Health Ware. Probably sold by door-to-door salesmen.

Hi Phil,

I don't generally freeze soups.  I usually make what I'm going to have at that meal or if there is a little left over I'll have it the next day.  I freeze mostly meat (when I get it on sale) and Spaghetti Sauce because I'll usually make a large pot.  Just about everything else I eat fresh or I try to anyway.

 

I live a block from a Kroger Fresh Market so I go there everyday or every couple of days and pick up what I'm going to eat in the next day or so.  I am Italian so everything is about family and food for me.  The whole process of buying, cooking and eating is what I'm all about.   I know for many cooking is a chore but for me it's more of a hobby.
