Surf

Ah, but New System Surf did originally contain enzymes and phosphates. This box would date from the late '80s/early '90s.

At a later point, it had enzymes again, and I think oxygen bleach, but I think the current Sun Products version does not.

Fun commercials, Freddie!

Well, the new Sun products one is not that bad....but yes, it got a generic brand now...I got off ebay some years ago a bunch of coin vend surf, something like 10-15 packets, that was made by Lever/Diversey.
I suppose Lever/Diversey can or could until not long ago still make "original" Surf or anyway their own Surf and sell it under "commercial" use being vended machines and laundromat "commercial" istances...while Sun has the exclusive for home-meant laundry products.
The same happens with liquid Wisk and powder All.....both for vending size laundry detergent and institutional multipurpose buckets you can find around.

The coin-vend surf is still available from many suppliers, they sell 100 units boxes for$ 25-30, not cheap, but if you consider they're meant to go for 80 cents to $1 in machines here you realize they make some money off it anyway..
It's advertised being good on odors Power Fresh something, and oxygenated formula....
It had a nice smell, and found it being good for average solied laundry, but seem to remember that it didn't get completely clean a few load with kitchen stuff with thougher stains....can't remember well but probably it was my fault , as I missed to use more than one packet that would have been needed for that load.....it was some years ago anyway, my memory could betray me.
I was tempted to order a box again during my last detergent ordering, but it was already high and then spending 30 bucks to get off it 100 loads was not wise nor sensed.....I wished I could find someone selling them singularly or in lots of 5 or 10, then some packets could have been fine to include in the box...not a 100 units one, anyway, still expensive in cost per load for what you get...

Vintage Surf

My version must be from when phosphates were either banned or becoming phased out. Cannot imagine the "new" Surf containing 7.1% phosphates being introduced say in the 1980's when the Clean Water Act and also various state's laws began to ban and or severely restrict phosphates in domestic laundry detergents.

That or Lever Bros had two versions; one for places such as New York that had phosphate bans, and another for places without.

Yes, it would not be strange to see 2 versions of the same product, I could see some Tide commercials from the 70s and 80s mentioning at the end "with no phosphates in your area"...
But, it's anyway strange that they did cut also enzymes along with phosphates in the Surf, I wonder why....
Prpbably my thought about Surf containing them came from a few boxes I have seen around on ebay and such that did contain them.... I don't know exactly why though, but I really thought it had them, well, apparently not everything is or was the same countrywide....

Here's an example:

The pardoy is funny, thanks for sharing.

As I recall, Surf in the orange box appeared in the mid to late Eighties. At that time some states, such as those bordering on Chesapeake Bay, were prohibiting phosphates but they were not illegal in most places and the manufacturers thought enough of their premium brands that they came in phosphate and no-phosphate versions, depending on where they were marketed.

For a time, you could even find brands that had three different formulations, regular, low-phosphate, and no-phosphate! This one is Code L, BTW.
