spacemates

Hi Dave

Great to read this thread and to read of your putting into action the thoughts I'm sure of many of us working on vintage washers have had, about producing obsolete door boots.

I've only thought about as far as making a clay boot and producing a plaster cast mould, that wouldn't be very precise and I wouldn't be sure of a suitable material to use, I know latex would last long at all.

But back to these westinghouse boots, i understand your looking at haveing the material extruded as the original westinghouse ones were and then joined to form the complete boot. If this is the case, and i ask not knowing much about the slantfront laundromats, otherthan what ive seen on this forum, but i do have an english electric liberator, ie a spacemate washer with the ribbed door boot, manufactured under liceince in the uk. So my question is, i know the slantfront and spacemate boots aren't interchangable, but do they have the same profile, so that the same extrusion is used but joined at a different length. If so I would be grateful to buy a length or if you can get a few spacemates boots made i would definatly buy a couple.

And as a side question, could you get the name or details of the rubber/silicone material used to manufacture the boots, to possibly use for repairs or to produce one offs using a plaster mould. I'm probably asking the impossible here, but when we have machines that could be restored but lack a boot, i tend to start thinking of possible solutions.

Thanks, look forward with interest to seeing how you get on.

spacemate n slantfront..

...boots are only different in the size of the outer lip that fits against the cabinet door- I had a space-mate boot on a slant-front machine, & it did not seal completly , as water drooled down the front of the cabinet- I am wondering about the garter rings that came with the old boot kits....will these be supplied with the newboots?

YES - count me in.

I will definitely be interested in at least 1 boot.

Regarding the garter ring: I have had luck with the larger of the two GE Filter Flo boot clamps. It is the perfect size.

The original boots were a white or off white which would be best but not crucial. I would think silicone rubber would be best to use, but don't know if that is an option.

Yes I've used large clamps to hold them in place myself (at least on the space mate boot) and it was much easier than trying to get that garter ring installed. I used a Make A Clamp kit...

Jon,

They're all over ebay.  Type is the part number from the picture WH1X1580.

I doubt this is happening.  It's been a long time since the original poster has commented.

Will,

The last time the original poster, Dave, made a comment about making these boots was last December.  I doubt they're going to be made.

I got a message at the beginning of June...

He said, "I am going to have 50 made but they won't be ready till fall. I will let you know a final cost when I have them in hand." It is now the fall...

Production of boots

I've been kinda waiting to see if any more people wanted these boots because the more I get the cheaper it makes them. I have about 35 soft commitments for boots. I guess I will just go ahead with making 75 and sell them on here or on eBay. I will call the company Monday and give the go ahead for production. When they are done I will post on here and start selling them. I am going to guess they will between $75 and $100 with no garter ring. They will be white in color.
