Toaster Oven Thread ... what's on your counter?

My two small ovens both smaller one ( Redi Baker ) from late 1940s. Larger one ( Redi Oven ) from early 1950s
I use one or the other ( or both ) daily. They heat quickly and I can toast and bake in these. Perfectly bale biscuits. Toast is also perfect in these. I rarely use my large oven, with just two of us I can bake an entree more quickly than waiting for the big oven to preheat.

Kitchenaid dual convection countertop oven

I'm quite happy with it.

I plan to replace it by a Breville as I'm switching all my small appliances to that brand, but I think I'll wait until it dies.

GE Toast-R-Oven toaster oven bake setting burns food

Hi, I have a vintage GE (General Electric) King-Size Toast-R-Oven toaster oven, Model A13127, that has worked perfectly until a few days ago when I attempted to bake a small pot pie and the temp didn't stop at my setting (set for 400, but went past 500 until I shut it off). I heard a few clicks when this happened. As if it was trying to control the rising temp, but no longer could. I had read that the issue could be the solenoid. So, I opened the side to expose the workings and the solenoid looks fine. I'd check the thermostat, but I don't know where it is or what it looks like. I love this toaster oven and want to fix it, as long as I can do so safely. Would someone here have advice on how I can fix it please? I know I could just buy another one online, but if I can easily fix mine, I'd prefer to do so.

GE toast R ovens

These were very reliable little ovens as you can see from the inside it was fairly complex. It was very clever the way GE built them and a testament that they worked so well.

I’m not sure if there any service manuals around for these I’ve never seen one. There may be a way to fix it, I also don’t know anything about parts availability for them, my gut feeling is the best that you could do is buy another one at the thrift store as they were so popular you’ll probably find pretty much the same thing.

yeah, we had one of those GE 4 slice toaster ovens that lasted me 40 years from college in 1982 to last year--one time pushed the lever and it popped and smoked and that was the end of it

Thank you for the advice, Combo52. My toaster model must be rare, having the lever for the oven temp. Most of the similar GE models I'm finding online have the turn knob for oven temp. Could you recommend a particular model please? Also, since you're local to me (I used to live in College Park), would you be interested in some old tube TVs and radios? The 1930 house I bought in Pasadena came furnished with a bunch of vintage stuff. I can post some photos if you're interested. Thanks!

Largest version of the Breville which replaced a next size down unit which was beginning to emit a burning rubber smell.

I normally don't like something so computerized, however the coiling of the elements, their dispersed wattage, cavity design and modulated heat output make for cooking comparable if not better than a full size oven. I normally wouldn't be caught on my worst days with something like this but coupled with the overall good build quality I gave my first Breville a try and after lasting 7 years of daily use I decided to give this one a try too.

Overall I love this oven.

Can anyone show me the internals of a GE toast r oven like the one in reply 35? I wonder how it works and why its so complex... I want to know.

At how BIG these new toaster ovens are-I am sticking to my old Hotpoint built in.These new ones are like MONSTERS on the counter.Just too big for me.On one of ones box at Best Buy cautioned you it needs two people to lift on the counter!RIDICULOUS!

Monsters vs Dinosaurs

Bigger, yes, but can we admit its more energy efficient in today's world? I used to preheat my oven for everything including chicken nuggets, small frozen meals and even reheating because the small toaster oven I had could not hold a steady temp or fit the product. The Breville lets me cook most meals without having to preheat the dinosaur. And, the dinosaur has a membrane pad which has worn through- the knobs on the Breville still work like the day I bought it.

Same thing for Broiling- cheese melts and meat browns faster than in the dinosaur.

I think the Breville toaster oven series will go down as the greatest set of toasters ovens ever produced. Build Quality, longevity, ease of use, instructions, temp stability, toasting, browning, baking, cooking options, built in light... all 5 stars.

At this point don't need or want a monster "toaster oven"Just use my GE Advantium.Its faster and doesn't use that much power since it doesn't have to run as long.Left the forklift sized "toaster ovens" at the store.

The GE toaster oven shown at the beginning of this was a nice size.NOT too big but big enough for one person sized heating.My Mom and stepdad had one.Worked nice as a toaster and could heat pot pies that were in an aluminum pie dish.Miss that GE machine!! Like to see those come back.

Oh yes the smaller toaster ovens were common at manned radio-TV transmitter sites-usually at these places it was an FCC requirement that it had to have a bathroom and simple kitchen appliances-fridge,toaster oven and a hotplate.Many studios had the same machines.Not going to fix a gourmet meal-just heat your lunch.These is a regular sized fridge,and range in the VOA transmitter site kitchen.Also two microwaves-an acient Sharp Carousel oven and a new Commercial one.And a smaller Danby toaster oven!

An appliance I need to get the hang of using in order to trust how long the time and temperature should be…

Fear of burning my food, stuff still cold, cheese not melted or melted all over and needing to be scraped up/off seems to characterize what I probably forgot to mention having in another thread about our appliance stock…

I had gotten this with our wedding set and finally recently began using it at our current home, as it never even made it out of the box at our apartment… We have another from my in-laws we’d been using before and there too never had much confidence using which has now gotten put away…

Had one at my parents’ house I’d gotten and used fairly frequently before I’d moved out and see it sitting in the basement all gunked up and the cord unsafely frayed…

I totally feel you.

I was a Kitchen-Aid guy and for many years I would nearly run away from any Breville product, thinking Kitchen-Aid was far superior.
Then my mixer was replaced under warranty over 7 times, my KA blender was also replaced. When it came time to buy a food processor, I wanted one with a dicing kit but I was afraid of buying the same Kitchen-Aid I had in Brazil. Ok, I was "forced" to go with Breville.

During first use I was already shocked. It felt like using a professional robot coupe. That torque, WOW! then I bought the Breville milk frother.. again, wow. Coffee maker... OMG, best coffee maker I've ever had!

That made me completely fall in love with Breville. They're modern, which somewhat sucks to me, but they have a "je ne sais quoi" that makes Breville appliances really impressive and reliable.

My next coubtertop oven will definitely be a Breville. My kitchenaid is somewhat new but guess what, it's already having some hiccups.

I have a GE A4T93B with the "garage door" that opens upward, a GE A5T94, and a GE Versatron 1000.

 

I just got the Versatron today and bought it specifically so I could use a 9 x 13 pan in it instead of using my big oven. I tested it and the only thing that doesn't work is the timer   I'm looking for a manual, however these are pretty rare units so I'm not expecting to find one.

 

Any advice on trying to fix the timer? It spins fine but does nothing otherwise.

Since the fire-now have the large Brevelle toaster over like in post#69.At first was not going to get one of the "forklift" size machines-but bit the bullet and got one.Very pleased with it.Worksvery well.Can be a convection oven,too.I set the most used functions times and temps-so I can go to them by turning the function control dial.Pulls 15A at 120V.Same as my Vitamix blender.
