Toasters with burnt toast smell

I have a couple of toasters in my collection that both have an issue I cannot figure out. Both of them smell strongly like burnt toast as soon as I turn them on.

One of them was very dirty when I got it, lots of crumbs and even pastry shells inside. So not surprising it smelled. I took it all apart and cleaned and vacuumed it all out, washed the crumb trays, etc. But it still does it.

The other is even more surprising, because it is clean as a whistle down in the slots. Shiny, no crumbs or carbonized deposits, nothing. IT looks almost like it was never used. Crumb tray shiny and clean too.

So I cannot figure out why they keep smelling. You would think if something had gotten on the elements it would burn off after a minute or two. The first one even tends to make a small amount of smoke when first powered up.

And it can't be the elements burning out because they both all seem to heat fine. My daily user toaster (just a cheap newer Hamilton Beach) never smells.

Burnt Toast Smell

On a cold day just run each toaster through lots of cycles [ 20-50] and I suspect the burnt smell will largely go away, it is simply some bread residue burning away.

 

I used to have a GE-Black & Decker toaster oven with continuous cleaning finish in it and after giving the crumb tray a Good cleaning I would run it through several maximum toast cycles and then leave it on 500 F for a 1/2 hour or so to burn out any food smell and clean up the CC finish, it worked well.

<span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #008000;">As a child my parent's toaster was famous for burning toast. I don't remember the brand. We did get a more modern Sunbeam 4-slice but I recall it did the same thing. I got to the point I loved burnt toast. Just the smell of it brings back all sorts of good memories. I know...I'm weird. </span>
