I have a circa 1977 Maytag A-206S. I love this machine and take great care of it. The top seal under the agitator is like new with no leakage and the agitator comes off with no effort. The question I have is this: how often does the oil in the transmission need to be changed? I am sure that the grease in it is original from the factory. Is there anything I should expect from a machine of its vintage? I am very fond of this machine and want to keep it going for awhile, or until I find a matching A806 set with the sudsaver (I wish) . Any info would be appreciated thanks guys, Derek

btw, after taking the front panel off, I found that the Sudsaver Valve has been disconnected and is missing (there are two taped wires hanging and thats all). I am assuming that it had been bypassed in its life. If possible, I want to locate another valve assembly and restore the sudsaver function the way it was. Is it worth it? and did that system have any problems? thanks, Derek

It really varies. A good indicator that it needs to be changed is when the agitation is a little slow to start on the first wash and surrounding temps are above 70F.
I've seen really hard ridden 12 series machines become sluggish at the 20 year mark, and then there's RCD's 1959 142 washer that still has a real strong agitation from the get go.

As for the Sudsaver valve.
Is this the first that you've noticed that this machine had a suds option?
What I meant, and someone can correct me if wrong, is MTs usually have a 2 button switch on the control panel for choosing how you want to handle the valve option.
Unlike KM or WP, which only allowed one to return suds a set spot on the timer.
Do you have any switches on your control panel that say "suds save" or "suds return"? Something like that.
If you don't, and the wires are there for the suds option, that could mean someone removed the switch, as well as the valve. If you remove the control panel cover, you should see some sign of wires, that kind of thing. So, you would have to replace the valve, the suds hose, and the switch.
Its funny advising someone on how to INSTALL a suds valve.
When I was refurbishing and selling, I almost ALWAYS removed suds valves and the wires (for safety reasons). On MT & GE this is easy enough. On KM or WP, it could mean changing all the plumbing inside the machine
Anyway, I hope you find what you need.

MT SUDSAVER WASHERS
MTs sudsaver system worked well so there is no reason not to try to fix it, you could even go for Energy-Star certification after you do. Eric on MTs sudsavers you can only return the suds at one point on the dial. MTs advantage is that you can turn off the two way valve and let all the water go out the rinse drain hose via the pushbuttons on the control panel.

here are some pics of the control panel. the Suds Return works I will usually run it on heavily soiled clothes that need some extra agitation. but the valve and Suds-Saver hoses on the inside of the machine have been removed.
