Picked up a 9-load box of Trend non-ultra powdered detergent at Dollar General for $1.00 last week just to try it out.
I must say that I was pleasantly surprised! I used it on a load of very dirty, slightly greasy shop towels and rags in the Maytag wringer washer. I used the maximum dose of 1 1/2 cups. It seemed strange to use that much detergent since detergent dosing is so much smaller these days, but the items came out very clean and smelling great. The scent is just right. It's not overpowering, yet it's very fresh. This reminds me of the old powdered Purex from the 80's.
Since I used the wringer, I rinsed the towels and rags by hand. They rinsed very easily. Looks also like this detergent is suitable for traditional top-loading and HE machines as well.
I'll have to see how it works on my white items, but I was impressed with the job it did with my towels and rags.
